November 9, 200322 yr The Marlins will consider trading the arbitration-eligible Braden Looper this winter. Keeping Looper for 2004 would seem to be superior option, but the Marlins might prefer to get something for him now rather than lose him after next season. Looper probably won't make much more than $3 million in arbitration, so if the Marlins want to move him and try to keep Ugueth Urbina, they shouldn't have much trouble finding a taker. c/o Rotoworld November 9th 2003 Interesting, I never really thought of it the way they did.

November 10, 200322 yr In baseball terms I'd rather have Looper than Uggie. But in PR terms . . . Looper could be a better closer than Urbina if he only developed an offspeed pitch. But, since he sticks with 2 seam fastball, he'll just be a mediocre pitcher.

November 10, 200322 yr Guys, don't forget Tim Spooneybarger. It looks like he will be retained by Beinfest. His recovery and a spring training with McKeon and Rosenthal will make him into the closer of the future we traded for him for. He has the stuff, now the question is when will he be back?

Best case scenario, he's back in August.
November 10, 200322 yr August is good, because it would be like adding a late trade to the team. Fox can be our closer and Spooney can setup until next season. in 2005 spooney can be the closer. Looper needs to have a very very good spring training in order to earn the job in my own opinion.

Braden would close over Chad, but I don't think Looper will even be here. I seriously believe Urbina and Fox will be back.

Before tommy john surgery his only problem stopping him from becoming and elite closer was his arm strength (he couldnt throw 96-97). Now that he has had the surgery, tommy john surgery actually strengthens your arm so he might be able to throw it near that speed. In Atlanta his rookie year he had 2.45 era as the braves setup man and he was lights out most of the time. Now that he will throw even harder than he did, he will be an elite closer. so i do not think that the marlins should sign Urbina to a long term deal with the marlins because in 2005 (i think) tim spooneybarger will be an even better closer than him. I think the marlins should find someone from free agency that can close for one year and then pass the closers role to spooneybarger or.... Just use burnett and looper as the closers for next year. just try to get burnett some work before putting him back into the starting rotation. And..... If anyone thinks that Burnett can not be a closer then just look at most closers and most of them have a couple of things in common and one of them is that they were not a good starter and... whenever a top pitching prospect is being brought into the league they usually say that if they have the stuff to be a great starter and he would be even better if he was a closer. So if burnett was a great starter like he is then he should not have any trouble closing out games next year for the marlins/

That could happen but i think that the marlins will know what they have in spooneybarger and also they know how good burnett was as a starter and being a starter is more important than a closer.
