The worst part is what happened tonight was exactly why he got sent down in the first place, when the same stupidity happened in Washington. You can't just say in the 2nd inning "Okay, today I'm piecing the pen together" without looking at the circumstances. It almost makes me feel like they decided in a meeting before the game who was going to pitch regardless of what was happening. I understand your frustration - but who do you put out there? Check out the gamelogs. Meyer 2 IP yesterday. Calero pitched 2 straight games (3 after tonight - btw Fredi used him in a blowout again). Sanches pitched a bunch yesterday. I'm not sure of Leo's game log, but I'm guessing he's been used a lot. I'm all for throwing caution to the wind in the middle of a playoff race, but there are some limits, and I'm not sure how Fredi could've played it tonight which wouldn't have crossed that threshold.

Thinking about it though, Kiko most likely should've started the 8th. He pitched the last 2 days, but looking at the gamelogs, he had only thrown 27 pitches combined in those 2 outings.

It's not that bad, Pinto hasn't really pitched much in the last 15 days, Kiko hasn't really either. 5.1 innings and 6.1 innings. Both could have pitched today, but we're too busy thinking about tomorrow to do today. It was Kiko's 3rd day in a row, but he was in 4 days rest before that, same for Pinto.

August 30, 200917 yr This is part of the reason why the closer's role is so overrated. I bet you Leo Nunez wasn't even considered for the 8th inning tonight. And as fans, we've come to expect that b/c closers are supposed to get "saves." But at the end of the day, what's the "save?" If you're the closer..."the man"...why can't you be counted on to go more than 1 inning. The save situation, at the time, is the 8th inning. It's a game at 4-4. The bullpen is taxed...the fresh arm tonight is the closer. He's on 2 days rest, his 2 saves against the Mets were easy saves (26 pitches combined), and before that, he hadn't pitched in 4 days. So why can't the "closer" go more than 1 inning tonight? Not as if Leo sucks when he goes more than 1. Leo has been forced to pitch 2 innings twice in games this year, and both times he came out scoreless. So why not the "closer?" B/c it's not a "save situation?" Most overrated "role" in sports.
