October 6, 200916 yr Source: Marlins will retain Gonzalez as manager by Ken Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal has been the senior baseball writer for FOXSports.com since Aug. 2005. He appears weekly on the FSN Baseball Report and MLB on FOX. Fredi Gonzalez will remain manager of the Marlins, according to a major-league source. Gonzalez signed a contract extension through 2011 last February, but his job security came into question over the weekend after ESPN.com reported that the Marlins were talking to Bobby Valentine about a position with their club. Marlins team president David Samson fueled speculation about Gonzalez's status by declining to state definitively that the manager would return next season. The source, however, indicated that Gonzalez never was in jeopardy. "There is nothing to that — zero," the source said. Club officials met Monday in New York to discuss the season with owner Jeffrey Loria, who reportedly was frustrated by the team's failure to make the playoffs. While Loria has a longstanding relationship with Valentine, the Marlins have no apparent reason to fire Gonzalez. They won 87 games this season, the third-highest total in franchise history, and 84 games the previous year. Valentine remains a candidate for managerial openings with the Indians and Nationals. Gonzalez could become a candidate for the Braves when Bobby Cox retires after next season. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/10177232/Source:-Marlins-will-retain-Gonzalez-as-manager

October 6, 200916 yr Author Source: Fredi Gonzalez to remain Florida Marlins manager By CLARK SPENCER cspencer@MiamiHerald.com Fredi Gonzalez will remain manager of the Marlins, according to a team source. The manager's future with the team was thrown into doubt over the weekend amid numerous reports that owner Jeffrey Loria was unhappy with the club's failure to reach the playoffs. Team executives David Samson and Admin Beinfest also termed the season as ``disappointing,'' and Samson would not definitively say whether Gonzalez would return to manage in 2010. The Marlins, despite having the lowest payroll in the majors, finished in second place in the National League East with a record of 87-75. It was the second straight winning season for the Marlins with Gonzalez as their manager. Gonzalez signed a two-year contract extension last spring that takes him through the 2011 season. Still undecided is the fate of the coaches. http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/breaking-news/story/1269195.html
October 6, 200916 yr I still think Fredi will be gone when Cox retires. Glad to see him around next season though even if its only for one more season.

October 9, 200916 yr Of course, little David fueled the rumors just a bit. Ah the public face of the FO. Actually, he fueled it by not commenting. Probably company policy. "Don't comment on rumors."

Actually he fueled it by commenting. Instead of just saying "we do not discuss rumors" he went on, when asked about the rumors, about how Jeffrey is very dissappointed and that he feels we should have made the playoffs and not happy about certain decisions and on and on and on. He fueled it, and he seemed to relish putting Fredi out there in the wind.

I tend to disregard anything said at this time of year and write it off as rumors. Meaning, not to be taken seriously. But what I did read was him tiptoeing around direct questions, and at the same time looking at everything logically and therefore never buying into the rumor in the first place. Just didn't make sense.
