For a bench spot I like Giles too. He was solid in 2008.

I'd think that pinch hitters ABs are generally in higher leverage situations, where strike outs become a lot more harmful (i.e. RISP). Again I could be completely wrong and it could be no difference between the two. But my gut instinct is that a contact guy is better to have on the bench. I'm not saying he's not a good bench bat. But between, say, him and the late Frank Cat, I'd probably would have gone with Cat if we're simply talking about only bench production and not starting.

Just looked at his career #'s, he's been horrible as a pinch hitter. Still though, I always feel like I can take the K's if the guy draws walks & especially if he can draw walks and hit for power.
February 4, 201016 yr ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says Russell Branyan was seeking a three-year deal in the $20-30MM range earlier this offseason. At this point I'd say he's looking at a one-year deal at maybe $3MM. Sounds like a great deal if we could reel him in for 2 to 3 MM for one year.

And they would justifiably laugh in his face if a thirty-five (well, 34) year old journeyman with not a single full season under his belt in ten+ years of pro ball asked them for $30 million and a three year contract, especially one who projects to strikeout more than 225 times a season and is not even first class defender at the only position he's qualified to man. I'm not convinced he could even win a roster spot on the Marlins without a guaranteed contract looking at the talent competing at the corners this year and/or waiting in the wings. I wish him luck finding his dream deal. But then there's his chronic back problem, in this economy he's really set the bar perhaps a bit too high. All that said, I have to admit to being in awe of his HR hitting chart this last season, very very few down the line cheapies, he seems quite able to him them out over deep center in almost any field in the game. It's pretty impressive. Too bad he's so one dimensional.

Yeah, but I can tell you that the White Sox and Tigers already have a logjam at that position. Toronto isn't as likely to spent the $$$, not when they have other guys who can fill the role. The Mets have already said that they are going with a Tatis/Murphy platoon at first, which is stupid but it's looking like they're really squeezed this offseason (financially). The Pirates have enough infielders as it is, and I don't think the Indians are interested in him when they are in a clear rebuilding mode. I also believe they have options there as well.
