I thought Maybin was recovering ok but this suggests he may not be 100% to start the season. Interesting. I thought Maybin would be ready to rock in 2010.

Assuming that either Cantu or a late FA-signing will be our starting 3B next year, he would have to compete with Morrison, Sanchez and maybe Jimenez for the starting 1B job. Branyan is going to be 35 years old next season, he's had a history of injuries, and his best offensive season in his career was last season, the first of which in 12 seasons he had over 500 PA's (and only the third time he's had over 300 PA's.) He's a guy that produces below average offensive numbers and average defensive numbers for a first baseman at best, equaling your typical top 20-25 first baseman. Nothing special, and someone who both Morrison and Sanchez have the ability to out-produce. I wouldn't be against the signing at all, but handing him the job immediately would be foolish.

February 3, 201016 yr 9:19pm: Two sources tell the Miami Herald that the Marlins have not made Branyan an offer. The Marlins have some interest in Branyan, but the Herald's sources say the club has not yet made an offer. They have merely contacted the first baseman's agent.
February 3, 201016 yr Baseball reporting seems to often be of poor quality around this time of year (yet I can't get enough :whistle). Oh well; hopefully we end up with him. I also am pretty confident he could outproduce Gaby and Logan in 2010, not to mention the usual arguments about delaying arbitration and such.

I agree, for 2010 anyways Morrison has a solid chance if he gets some time to practice in AAA before a mid-season call up. With either one of them though, it's doubtful that they won't be able to put up numbers relatively close to what Branyan could produce.

I still don't think the Marlins have much faith in Sanchez or he would have been with them last year. As for Morrison, I have a hunch he will need some more time in the minors. All one has to do is look at how he was "used" when he was called up last year. Rarely. Never a defensive replacement. It is obvious the team has no confidence in his bat or glove at this level. And he didn't help his cause in Winter ball this year. Going into ST it appears Gaby is a long shot to make the team in any capacity, even if the team is saying it's between him and Logan with JJ2 an also ran. I think he would have to have one heck of a ST to make the Opening Day roster. It's a possibility, but I wouldn't count on it.

From talking to Michael and Admin, he will be ready. He's been in Jupiter for quite some time already. I think he will be ready. The problem with Cameron is trying to figure out if he has learned a lesson from last year. He outright told me he "hid" his injury last year because he wants to play every day. He dosen't like to sit and watch. I think he has, but talking to a guy for 10 or 15 minutes is no way to judge how he will respond. I don't think this suggests anything other than Frisaro is taking a negative approach by thinking anyone can have a set back (which is true), or he's really stretching to find a way to find a fit for Branyan on the team. I just don't think Logan gets moved to the OF for any amount of time. He's our 1B of the very near future. If he dosen't make the Opening Day roster he will be in the minors fine tuning his skills.

February 3, 201016 yr 35.... his best year of his life was last year and he still struck out 150 times in less than 450 at bats. id like him off the bench but i think hes more likely to fall on his face than not... and if he comes in to start, i think thats more of an indictment on what we have. such a shame we couldnt bring johnson back. with that said, branyan hit the longest homerun ive ever seen a few years ago against the fish in milwaukee
February 3, 201016 yr Honestly, this all depends on Morrison, its his job to lose. If Gaby puts on a crazy performance in ST is the only way I see him bypassing Morrison. About Branyan, I think he fits of what we would like coming off the bench, and I think thats why this wont happen. After the season he had last year I don't expect him to want anything less than to play a full season and see if it wasn't just a fluke. As this goes down to negotiations, which right now doesn't even seem as we offered anything just simply comtacted his agent, he's going to want to play everyday and really for that we just play either Morrison or Gaby Over all, if this signing is for a bat off the bench and to spot start once a while I am for it but not for him to start as our everyday first baseman, for that we could of kept Jacobs (30hr's)

More like my grandmother has more range than him, and .OBP's below .300 are quite pathetic, too.

Nick Johnson rarely plays a full season as he is pretty brittle.

I was going off of last year. My fault if FishDyasty meant career numbers. I meant what he is likely to produce in 2010. The chances of him repeating his 2009 performance again are very small. If Morrison or Sanchez (preferably Morrison) can put up numbers at least relatively close to what Branyan would be able to put up, then I'd want one of them to start not only to get experience, but I know that neither of them will strike out anywhere near the rate that Branyan does.
February 3, 201016 yr one dan uggla starting is enough. id rather see what the kids can do. and the more i think about it... is a guy who strikes out less than every 3 abs what we need off the bench? i hope we are in the running for giles. his patient bat off the bench would be nice.
