Delgado, Erstad?

Featured Replies

There are less than two weeks to go before spring training and the Florida Marlins are apparently trying to add another decent bat. The two names that supposedly interest the team most are Carlos Delgado(notes) and Darin Erstad(notes), according to the Miami Herald.

Since the team lost Ross Gload(notes) to the Philadelphia Phillies, it has been looking around to find a replacement and first baseman/outfielder Erstad and Delgado both could fit, though Delgado is apparently looking to make a lot of dough and nobody seems willing to give that to him right now.

Delgado pretty much missed the whole season due to injury. Meanwhile, Erstad spent last year with the Houston Astros, batting .194 with two homers.

i'm tired of all these rumors. becaue not one of them has come to truth. the gregg and braynan rumors really got my hopes up. definitely wouldn't mind giving erstad a non-roster invitee to spring training

According to ESPN's Rumors section, the Marlins would be interested in Delgado as a backup or platoon player at first, but he's not really interested in anything less than a starting job.

At this point we could probably get Erstad on a minor league invite, or certainly cheaper than Ross Gload.

Delgado's hip is still bugging him in Puerto Rico. He has only played in 2 games at 1B there and he has DHed 13 times.

I wouldn't mind an Erstad type player a firstbase/outfielder to fill Gload's spot. Delgado seems a better fit for an AL team until he shows he's healthy at least, he would be out of the Marlins price range. On another note are the Marlins still paying part of his contract?

Delgado would be a nice addition and insurance policy at 1B in case Sanchez flops or Morrison isn't ready. Plus he would certainly help turn the crowd back in our favor, or at least even it out some, for those PR games...

With his injuries though if he's demanding a starting job he's nuts. Don't get me wrong, I think he could probably still play pretty much everyday but he'd be better as a platoon guy at this point in his career. Otherwise DHing for some AL team would be a better fit.

Just a hunch but I think Delgado will either be a fulltime DH in the A.L. or he will retire. I don't see him settling for a platoon job in 2010.

I wouldn't mind having Delgado if his health wasn't going to prevent him from playing in the field practically all the time, but that seems like it may be the case.

To me, and Admin Beinfest hasn't called lately for free advice, I can't picture these guys as members of the 2010 Marlins. In my mind the fit for either is a huge stretch and a waste of roster space on a team that is trying to define itself playing a game that fits neither.

Don't get it and until one or both sign I'll feel comfortable believing this is just another Barry Jackson rumor that's oft-quoted but no one else can verify.

I think Delgado is a bad idea (can't play defense, will not come cheap). Erstad isn't much of a risk, since I think he would settle for a backup job and a minor league invite with incentives if he makes the MLB squad. Considering Erstad's track record I don't think there's any real risk involved.
