I think we have a very capable guy in AAA named Wilson Valdez who can win the 2nd base job (hes a natural SS but Marlins are considering moving him over). Valdez's stats - .295 with 24 extra-base hits and 49 stolen bases in 63 attempts. He also is exceptional defensively - i had read in the local newspaper for Alburquerque that managers around the league had named him and Hooper the best DB combo in the PCL.

In ESPN the projected roster was with him in 2nd Base.

 

But i rather go out and get an experience second baseman. However i think the Marlins are signing Castillo again. They are really going after him ( I dont know why). So i think Valdes needs to wait another couple of years.

He would be a huge hole in our offense, but if we can't get any of the vets cheaply he's a better option than Hooper. No lineup needs 2 JPs.

i agree the marlins sould sign castillo.

If Luis wasnt slowed by that injury he had, he could've had a season in stealing bases like Pierre and he had in 2002. We want a Pierre look alike so that when he and Pierre get on, a single possibly can score pierre from second and put pressure on the other team from the get go. As other analysts have said that to stop the marlins is to keep the 2 "jackrabbits" off base.

I prefer to resigning castillo but he is arugably one the best available free agents out there and what the marlins are offering now will easily be surpassed by another team. If the money were to be close, i think Castillo would stay but i dont think it will happen. I thank the Marlins for at least trying to resign him and hopefully we can get lucky.

MLB.com's latest hot stove report says it is difficult to see that Castillo will not end up with Florida next season.

i think that the marlins should try to sign castillo back but i doubt that is going to happen because supposedly both the yankees and red sox are after him. Also willson alverez looks like a decent player that can steal bases but does not get on base as much as he should. a .326 obp in AAA is not that good. he only walked 19 times in 338 at bats, i think the marlins should sign sum1 like grudzelanek and then give the second base job to Valdez when he is ready for it. Which should be when he learns to get on base i little more.

we dont know yet if he will be completely healthy for next season and you cant just say he will get 50 sb a year because he has only done that twice in his career.

Though, I would still prefer an Alomar.

Explain why you would want Roberto Alomar.

After a disappointing year with the bat in his second tour of the Pacific Coast League. Hooper has given way to slick-fielding Wilson Valdez.

 

Valdez, 23, began the year in Double-A but earned a May promotion. He hit a combined .295 with 24 extra-base hits and 49 stolen bases in 63 attempts.

 

A natural shortstop, he played 38 games at second last year before a late-August thumb injury ended his season.

 

"His bat has improved tremendously," one Marlins player-development type said. "He's an excellent defender, athletic and fearless on the bases. His attitude has changed completely."

 

Former Marlins third-base coach Ozzie Guillen made Valdez a pet project last spring, drilling him with the same joy-of-the-game type message he used to turn around Alex Gonzalez's career.

 

And he is at AA, not AAA Bandwagon. So he still has some time.

 

I dont think Castillo will ever be fully healthy with his hip. I hope I am wrong. And what is the deal with Alomar?! The guy is not the same player he used to be, but more importantly, he is too expensive and we dont need him. I would rather take a flyer on Reese, Young, try out Medrano, or bring in another 2B via trade. Unless Alomar wants a 1-year deal @ $1MM...

Also high on his to-do list is re-signing Derrek Lee, who made $4.25 million last season when he hit .271 and set career highs for homers (31) and RBI (92) while winning a gold glove."

Derreck Lee is gone no matter what..It just doesn't make sense keeping him at he price tag even if Castillo doesn't resign.

Actually, if you let Castillo go, and trade Lee you free up a lot of payroll to use on luxuries, like ....pitching. I love Castilllo, and I love to watch him play, but in terms of total value, he is expendable. I don't think whoever replaces him will match ALL of things Luis used to do, but they don't have to. There will be less drop off in overall value at that position, even if bringing up a new guy, than losing someone with some power who can knock in runs.

 

There's a better chance Pudge resigns if the market is indeed cool for the catchers this season. Especially if the salaries of Castillo and Lee are being paid by somebody else. I'll miss Castillo a lot more than Lee, but I don't think it's a great overall loss to the nulceus.
