June 16, 201016 yr I know a lot of you have been talking about trading Cody Ross for some relief pitching. What about trading Cameron Maybin for a good closer or set up man pitching for a bad team? Makes perfect sense to me.
June 16, 201016 yr Here are four reasons why this is not going to happen. 1. Cameron Maybin doesn't have as good of trade value as you may think. He's getting close to or below Jeremy Hermida trade value. 2. That would mean admitting they made a mistake on the Cabrera trade. This front office is not going to admit a mistake of that magnitude. 3. There's still hope Maybin can become a decent CFer in the majors. He has a history of killing minor league pitching, and he has shown glimpes of being a very good player (September 08, 09, somewhat of May this year). As stated before, we hope Maybin can still become a Mike Cameron kind of player. It may not be looking good right now, but he can still become an .800 OPS player with around 25+ steals and decent defense in the future. 4. *Gizmo added* Maybin is only 23 (and on the same topic, Miller is only 25).

I agree with you about #3 and #4. I will disagree with you about #1 and #2. With Maybin only being 23 I still think he has trade value to a team that is rebuilding. I see him still having a lot more value than Hermida who still stinks. As far as making a mistake on the Miguel Cabrera trade why not just admit it seeing how everyone knows they screwed up on that one.
June 16, 201016 yr Maybin doesn't have good value. Uggla, Cantu, or Ross have better value. I rather keep Uggla at 2nd base for a long time. Cody can be expendable if Maybin or BC ever start hitting. I know of Logan Morrision, but don't know what position he plays.
June 16, 201016 yr I know of Logan Morrision, but don't know what position he plays. -1st base I wouldn't be totally against a deal that involved Maybin for some bullpen help in return. But as mentioned one of the main reasons it's not likely is his trade value right now(or lack of) and he's still just 23,. I like Cody and would hate to see him go but it wouldn't shock me if something happened with him probably not this yerar but maybe next and our outfieild of the future is basically Cogs,Maybin, and Stanton.
June 16, 201016 yr Coghlan is not a long term outfielder. He'll move to 2nd base next year in all likelihood. Uggla will be traded, Cody will probably stay another year, Coghlan takes 2B, Cody moves to LF, Stanton stays in RF, and Maybin takes over CF. The other scenario is Coghlan going to 3B, Gaby getting traded, and Uggla staying at 2nd base. Should be noted Morrison can also play LF, so he can take over the position if ever needed in the future. I'll just say, one of these two will most likely be our team next season. 2B Coghlan 1B Sanchez/Morrison SS Ramirez RF Stanton LF Ross 3B Free agent signing/Sanchez C Paulino/Baker CF Maybin or 3B Coghlan 1B Morrison SS Ramirez RF Stanton 2B Uggla LF Ross C Paulino/Baker CF Maybin You could make a lineup for next season where Morrison would take over LF and Ross is traded, but that seems very unlikely. What I see is Ross getting his last year of arbitration, Uggla traded for a SP prospect very close to the majors and who will be good, Sanchez platooning with Morrison for the early part of the season until one proves they are going to hit both righties and lefties in the majors, Maybin taking over CF, and the rest staying about the same. Any way you look at it, Maybin is going to be on this team next season.

Any way you look at it, Maybin is going to be on this team next season. I think it's way too early to pencil in Maybin as the CF for 2011, based purely on the way the Marlins are handling him right now. He's in pure limbo. I don't foresee the Marlins considering the CF job next year to be Maybin's to lose. This means that there is probably a decent chance that Cody Ross stays and ends up playing CF, unless the Marlins acquire someone in the offseason.
June 16, 201016 yr I think unless it's somone insane like Soria or Hellickson, i.e. A clear huge upgrade that helps longterm as well, you don't do it. And you'd have to send a good second and maybe third piece to do something like that. The reason is, Maybin is the only thing in the organization that profiles as a long term CF. Cody is good, but at $6 million starting next year, he isn't someone you sign longterm to be a centerpiece part of the team. Probably keep him through arb next year as a solid starter and CF backup if Maybin fails again, but not past that. Maybin is young, cheap, and has a huge huge upside with some more contact. Which he did in AA and AAA despite his struggles in the bigs. It took Alex Rios, BJ Upton, and Adam Jones a few years to put it together too. There is no rush this season. He is still a huge part of this teams future and quite frankly, we need him unless like Cousins gets really better really fast in AAA. You trade Cantu ideally, move Coghlan to second or third and Uggla the other, and play Maybin and Morrison in the outfield. Cantu is the free agent, is not a type A free agent, will not be back next year, is not a star but is having a good year where teams need a right handed bat, we have good organizational depth at 2B/3B right now, and shuffling Coghlan out of LF increases team defense in any conceivable arrangement. It wouldn't be a big hit to the offense if you can get a pitcher that can help now and the future. I know he is beloved by the fans, but this screams baseball decision. If Cantu turns into an arm, Sean West comes back soon, and the team gets lucky with Marinez, Vanden Hurk, or Leroux able to throw some solid innings, bullpen problems really evaporate instantly. And it's not that much to ask for.

If maybin is sent down this year he is out of options next year and wont be riding the bench in April and May. I think he is absolutely penciled in for next year. I can't see them trading him per above, we have no other CF depth in the organization and don't need to be throwing FA dollars at an outfielder right now with a big decision on Uggla coming, and a lot of arbitration coming to Nolasco, Leo, Anibal, and Paulino, who all are going go be retained at this rate. Stadium isn't a fix all like some are saying. you still have to spend smart, even if you can spend more.

This FO has said repeatedly that they don't have much money to spend, and I believe that even with moving into the new stadium the organizational philosophy is not going to change all that much. Uggla's a good candidate for a trade unless this team suddenly surges before the deadline and shows life. Ross also has some value right now to teams needing an extra outfielder (I think Boston might be interested, due to the injuries bothering 2/3 of their OF right now). I would think that Cantu's the most likely to come back, unless Morrison proves he's ready and the FO is comfortable shifting Sanchez to 3rd next year. But our minor league depth at 3rd is basically just Matt Dominguez, and he still need work. This article from MLB Trade Rumors also seems to suggest that the team is still interested in keeping him around. They do say however that he doesn't really fit into our plans this year: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/maybin-still-part-of-marlins-plans.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29

Stadium isn't a fix all like some are saying. you still have to spend smart, even if you can spend more. I'm talking about the risk of Maybin not hitting next year. I think the Marlins will retain Ross and be open to the possibility that he will need to be the CFer if Maybin doesn't hit. This won't entail throwing away a lot of FA dollars, but could require Coghlan to stay in the OF (if Uggla stays and Cantu goes) or possibly putting Morrison in LF. Maybin hasn't proven enough to be entitled the CF position for 2011. And I never said this means that he will leave the organization. Maybe the Marlins don't demote him this season or maybe they simply use him as a spot starter/bench player in 2011 if he still isn't hitting. 2011 is his last chance to prove that he can be an everyday CFer. The Marlins need to be prepared in case of failure and not assume he's going to be the guy.
June 16, 201016 yr Being a little naive here, but what is his actual trade value right now? As in, if we were to trade him at this point, what players would we get in return?
June 16, 201016 yr Being a little naive here, but what is his actual trade value right now? As in, if we were to trade him at this point, what players would we get in return? Without a doubt, we'd get a quality reliever for him in return. Regardless of what he's done at the big league level, he's still a prospect right now at the age of 23, and could turn into something. Any non-contending team rebuilding would trade a quality reliever for a guy like Maybin. Whether it's worth it or not is another question. Quite honestly, I'd rather keep Maybin. I don't think we're a reliever away from contending this year, anyway.

Any way you look at it, Maybin is going to be on this team next season. I'm skeptical that the Marlins are even going to keep either Uggla or Ross, let alone keep both. I see Sanchez staying at first with Morrison shifting to LF for at least the beginning of the season. Overall, you could say that next year's lineup is pretty predictable, with the only questions being the possibility that Maybin isn't in the lineup (although I am 90% sure he will be), and if Ross/Uggla will be traded.

The Marlins need to be prepared in case of failure and not assume he's going to be the guy. I get your train of thought, but two things come to mind for me. One, I don't think the organization shares your sense of urgency with Maybin and that they truly believe in him still. and Two, payroll is going to come into play. The way I see it is, this team's most urgent need for 2011 is a 3B. And really, this is how it starts for Maybin being counted on. Cantu (and Helms) are FA, Gaby can't play their anymore, Dominguez is starting to put a solid year in AA, but Fleming has already said he is staying in Jax all year, and they will reassess next year. He is being fast tracked, but not for opening day 2011. So this leaves two internal candidates for 3B - Coghlan and Uggla. And considering that one of them starts at 2B, and Bonifacio, Barden, or Osvlado Martinez is not the answer right now, one of those two needs to play 2B also. I think they keep Uggla for these reasons despite trying to move him this offseason as things have changed now, and keeping Uggla means $10-11 million dollars. Payroll is going up, but that's still going to be 15-20% of overall salary easy. So if we start penciling in the must starts all over the field C - Paulino ($2.5) 1B - Gaby < - Has earned it (min) 2B - Uggla ($10) SS - Hanley ($11) 3B - Coghlan ($600k) LF - CF - RF - Stanton (min) Bench - Bonifacio/Barden (min), Baker (min), X, X, X SP - Johnson ($7.7), Nolasco ($6), Volstad (min), Anibal ($2.5), West (min) RP - Leo ($4), and who the hell knows We're around $46 million already, and I am anticipating payroll in the $55-60 range (2010 payroll is $47 million). So we need starting LF, RF, three bench players, and 6 relievers. That is a lot of bodies. However, we have this not above yet... LF - Morrison CF - Maybin Bench - Petersen/Cousins Relievers - Andrew Miller (who is going to cost $1,400,000.... yea), Pinto ($2+ million), Hensley ($1+ million) Sanches, Leroux, Vanden Hurk, Marinez, Sanches, Meyer, Badenhop, Wood, Tank, etc etc So you plug in Morrison and Maybin, sign a good solid veteran CF for $2 million versus keeping Cody for $6+ million (because you need Uggla positionally more than you need Cody and only so much money to go around), resign Wes Helms which I think is a given at this point because of our love fest with him for $1 million, and then give the last bench spot to "best camp kid on the 40 man," you've added $4.2 million to finish the position players, over $50 million just like that. Then Hensley hits arbitration, he's a must keep if he continues this. That's about $1 million, Sanches makes the minimum, Vanden Hurk is out of options he's in, he's making the minimum, Badenhop will be making the minimum since he's spending a huge part of this year in AAA, he's in, and then if someone sucks, let it rip with higher potential Marinez/Ceda/Leroux/Wood for RHP spots. So after the right handers, we're at $52-53 million. How about they sign a LOOGY for $2 million, or (and I know this strikes fear) keep Pinto for that amount, and then your last spot is for Andrew Miller "if" he turns it around this second half of the year, and if not camp battle with Meyer, new acquisitions, and street free agents. That's the low ball $55ish million payroll just like that. And do you really think they spend more? SO BRINGING IT FULL CIRCLE, and I just feel it's important to lay it out to really see where they are going, -Uggla is more important positionally, let alone production, than Cody, gotta keep him and go with the all rookie outfield and just get a really strong OF veteran to be a true 4th outfielder and help them. I guess you could keep Cody, sign a veteran 3B, and move Coghlan to 2B, which they may do, but signing a starter for 1 year versus a guy to essentially be a super 4th outfielder is a tougher sign. -Resigning Helms helps Coghlan at 3B, and Coghlan could always cover the OF and Helms spot start a few. Leaving additional backup for the outfield. and here's the kicker - mid season Matt Dominguez will have a half year in AAA, and if he is ready to go, Dominguez can slot in at 3B, Coghlan pushes somebody else out of the starting lineup. And if it's Maybin, short term I bet Mike Stanton is the contingency in CF (seriously, he can probably do it short term. He was playing CF last year), and if they need someone, go out at the deadline and get a real CF to help because a "David Dejesus" is out there every year. That's the Maybin contingency to me - trade deadline (and solid veteran 4th outfielder). I just don't think Cody is NEEDED if the only reason is to backup in case Maybin fails. The OF is really covered. I say you let it rip with the above team, and hope all the kids hit. Personally, I think there will be bumps but Hanley, Uggla, the catchers, and Coghlan are pretty much going to hit, Gaby does not get cheated and I can't see that changing, and Stanton, Morrison, and Maybin will have their moments, with clear huge potential with all three of them. Back them up with a STRONG VETERAN BENCH and I think all will be well. Especially with Dominguez lurking, and the trade deadline. This isn't including anything we get by trading Cantu and Ross, which in a worst case scenario, is bringing back a quality young RP arm if nothing else to help out there. --- Just saying, I don't want to just assume Maybin is going to hit, but at the same time we REALLY need him to financially and longterm. I'd say send him to AAA, and say it's his job to lose in spring training. And if Cousins, or "that veteran" wants to beat him out, so be it. To the bench, and fight your way into playing time and the 2012 starting lineup. I do agree there, if he isn't hitting by the end of 2011, he's done with this organization and it's time for the Marlins to go sign a free agent CF.

Just throwing a name out that no one seems to be mentioning......John Raynor, was a high prospect a year ago before the Rule 5 draft to Pittsburgh. He is on the DL for the 2nd time in a month, but is hitting .310 with limited PA this spring. If anyone remembers he was a star in AA a couple years ago.
June 17, 201016 yr He was never a high prospect and his minor league lines prior to 2009 were BABIP filled and he strikes out a ton. The power he showed pre-2009 is hindered by the fact that he was constantly old for the competition he was facing. And more importantly, he's also not a CFer, he's a LFer. Even though he has blazing speed, he takes bad routes and is below average defensively for a CFer. Raynor should be fine as a future back up OF especially with his speed but he likely will not be starting material unless some drastic changes are made.
June 17, 201016 yr i think the best course of action would be to sign a left handed CF to be the bench lefty, and platoon him and BC if Maybin can't handle it and still has that option. Edmonds (Though his comments coming into the season were "I fully expect to start" so probably won't accept bench job), Kotsay, Ankiel, Jody Gerut, amd Willie Harris are the names that fit our price range going off the list on MLBTR.
June 17, 201016 yr Lou, that was a good post and I see absolutely see your point, but do you really think that things could change if Maybin really underwhelms this season in MLB or AAA? My gut is telling me that Maybin hasn't been sent down yet because the Marlins really don't want to burn that option. I think they are gauging whether or not Coghlan and Stanton are for real before they make such a drastic move. It almost seens like they are protecting themselves under the assumption that Maybin might need to be in the minor leagues next season. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this. I was surprised that they started helms against the Rays and would be even more suspicious if they do the same thing against Baltimore. Maybin hasn't even had an AB since June 6th. If losing Cody is due to financial constraints (which is almost always the case), do you think they at the very least try to sign some cheap veteran on the order of $1-2 million? I agree with not wanting to burn the option for those reasons and testing Stanton out for 3 weeks to see if he sticks (and as much as this is bad to say, isn't it a lot more convenient for the Marlins if Stanton goes 0-20, 12 K next 5 games so they don't have to have this option issue with Maybin and can just send Stanton back to AAA to learn how to not swing at everything. Just saying), but if they are committed to making him the bench outfielder of this year, and then sending him to AAA all next year, what does that do to Maybin's confidence? They say he is taking it well and is a good kid, but we don't want to utterly demoralize him at the same time. If he's going to be OK with that, I am all for it and just resign Cody for his 6th year arbitration and skimp on the bench/pen a little as a result, but we still need Maybin big time and we can't kill his confidence if he's going to get 100 PA the rest of the year. But hey, it worked for Gaby (albeit just a Sep call up) who sat on the bench for 30 games last year and got 20 PA. I just can't imagine him sitting on the bench for 4 months. Burn the option, have him play in 75+ minor league games, call him up in September, and then just hope to god he is rocking in April 2011. Or at least posting a .250/.325/.400 slash which would be more than acceptable for the time being. If Cody does go, I suspect a very legitimate 4th OF who can cover CF to come as a result. They pretty much have to do that as Carrol/Raynor/Cousins/Petersen are not going to be able to, but that's another story we'll have to wait and see on. You can't go into the year with a Morrison, maybin, stanton, petersen, and bonifacio OF, with Coghlan able to cover for someone and playing "Helms/Veteran" in his place. That would be insane. But if you throw in a Mark Kotsay/Willie Harris type like NNY said, that could work if the kids all develop at a reasonable speed. Way far in advance though on this one. We will wait and see. It will be very telling with what they do with Uggla and Cody as to how they view the kids in the organization.
