August 5, 201016 yr It won't matter if he doesn't win 20 games like Ubaldo. If he can keep the ERA under 2 and the WHIP under 1.05 then he should be the Cy Young Winner or if anything a top 3 contender.

They're discussing the pitcher himself not the entire team. An entire team makes it to the WS not one solitary pitcher. The pitcher can contribute but he can't take a crappy team with a horrendous bullpen to the WS. Ubaldo has a better team behind him than JJ does.

Better run support, better bullpen, and much better defensive team behind him, as well. JJ's had a better year, but the Cy Young is Ubaldo's to lose. That's just the way it works. Nolasco having 2 more wins than JJ doesn't help JJ's case either, I'm sure. I don't know who will win it but I would put my money on Halladay being the most deserving at the end of the season.

August 6, 201016 yr Well Grienke last season played on a bad Royals team and only had 14 Wins on the season but was absolutely brilliant ERA and WHIP wise and was striking out batters right and left. If Grienke had a shot and won then J.J. has a great chance to win in my eyes. But as previously stated the fact that he has 2 less wins then another pitcher in the rotation doesn't help. Its easier to win the award with a low win total when there aren't other guys in the league racking up a huge amount of wins.
August 6, 201016 yr Greinke's case last year is JJ's best shot. W/L is way too overrated on two teams with entirely different seasons. Anyone who knows our ballclub and our crappy defense and bullpen and anemic offense knows that JJ's W/L numbers are always gonna be skewed.
August 6, 201016 yr Sirspud that's not true 3 pitchers in the AL last year had 19 win and 3 had 17 then 3 tied Grienke in wins. J.J. Will most likely finish in the same situation as Grienke last year. He'll lead the league in ERA and Whip, have a top 10 Strikeout total and then if anything he could be in the top 15 in wins which could win him the Cy Young.

August 7, 201016 yr Yeah if the season ended today, it should probably go to Halladay. He averages an inning per start over JJ, and 2/3rd an inning over Wainwright.
