Mourning forced to end NBA career, needs kidney transplant

November 24, 2003

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - Alonzo Mourning's NBA career is over.

The seven-time All-Star center will soon need a kidney transplant and will no longer be able to play professional basketball, New Jersey Nets president and general manager Rod Thorn announced on Monday morning.

"It is with great sadness that I make this announcement," Thorn said. "Alonzo is a true champion and a very courageous athlete who attempted to defy the odds with his comeback to the NBA. Unfortunately, his medical condition will not allow him to continue his basketball career. Our thoughts and prayers are with him as he continues his fight against this disease."

The 33-year-old Mourning left the Miami Heat and signed a four-year, $22 million contract with the Nets last July despite missing the entire 2002-03 season with a kidney disease.

In 2000, Mourning was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a disease that causes chronic kidney failure within a decade in more than half of the people diagnosed.

While I was among those very disappointed when he left Miami, this is indeed very sad. I think his heart was thinking before his head. Alonzo has a lot of heart and great intensity and really wanted to play, but someone in his condition should likely not have been playing basketball at the NBA level. He is still an icon in his new home of Miami and will be welcomed back here in full health, hopefully. Incidentally, there has been talk among the Heat that Alonzo's and Tim Hardway's numbers would be retired after they retired, and ironically both have called it quits this week.

damn, thats real sad. i guess it was that bad

Umm ok....????

I never said Zo was a saint, but we have all known K-Mart is a douche since his days at Cincy, and for him to say "my kidney my kidney" to a guy with a life-threatening kidney disease is disturbing.

what and LJ didnt have anything to do with that team going apart?

The Heat were'nt willing to pay him what he was trying to get, and everybody knows Zo wasnt really in the Heats future plans. he knew he didnt have much time left and was trying to cash in AND trying to at least get to the Finals, something he wasnt going to do down here. i dont blame Zo for leaving, he did what he thought was best for him.

oh and Maggs, odom is the same poster who said he wouldnt mind Bobby Bonds dying before the Marlins-Giants series in August so Barry wouldnt play, which i believe Bobby died right before the series started if i remember correctly.

This is a real bummer because this time it's gone far beyond basketball. The drugs aren't working, he needs a new kidney or it could be his life. I wish him the best of luck.

Looking at this from the business of basketball:

It shows that Riley made the right move letting him go. Imagine if the Heat had him under contract for the next few years. Zo should probably void his contract so the Nets can get someone else in the offseason. They'll probably get that injury exception but I don't quite know how that works. I don't know if Zo will be willing to turn down 22 million dollars, though...I mean I'd like to see you do that. I also wonder if his contract had a kidney klause of some kind.

What else? Oh yeah, Kenyon Martin. Cut the guy a break. It was insensitive, but I don't think we need to label him evil. What do any of us really know about KMart?

Wow, and that didn't get him banned?? I don't even know how to respond to that, that's just wrong and embarassing.

I feel bad for the guy, one of the most passionate guys in the game today. And never got to get a ring...

I mean I'm still bitter he left Miami like that (even though now I'm kinda glad because that would have put us in a bigger mess than we are already but that's not the point) but I never would want to see that happen to anybody, especially someone like him.

It's one thing to make fun of an ankle injury, but another to make fun of a life threatening disease
