Posted August 2, 201113 yr Originally I was going to post something like this in the 8/1 post game thread but then I figured it deserved its own thread. Javy Vazquez got off to an absolutely atrocious start to the year and has since turned it around. It's incredible how much the numbers demonstrate this. The following shows his ERA/FIP/xFIP/SIERA line for each month this season: April 6.39/6.19/6.28/6.35 May 5.67/4.14/4.57/4.53 June 5.52/3.80/3.57/3.40 July 3.16/3.60/3.33/3.39 August (1 start) 1.37/4.71/4.53/5.19 Now, I'm not going to go through the trouble of graphing these out but the numbers tell a striking story. There's no way around it, Vazquez was absolutely horrible in the first month of the season. In fact measuring using xFIP he was the worst starting pitcher in the Majors by almost a full run. He started to turn it around in May and was essential a bit worse than a league average pitcher. However, while his ERA in June doesn't demonstrate it, Javy has been a top 40 starter in MLB over the last two months. He's basically performing equivalent to the 2nd best level of his career (behind an amazing 2009). That's incredible considering how the season started. If he can continue his last 2 months over his remaining 10-11 starts then there's a good chance that he'll actually have earned that 1 year deal.
August 2, 201113 yr I'm all for resigning him for next year. He's actually earned after the first 2 months plus we don't have a lot of SP anyways...
August 2, 201113 yr It's pretty amazing that each of those 4 stats has improved in every single month every time.
August 2, 201113 yr I am surprised at his May, it looked a lot worse, but I did notice he was a lot less tentative in May then he was in April.
August 2, 201113 yr i wouldnt mind resigning him either if he keeps it up. however we do need top get at least one proven starter.

August 2, 201113 yr I wouldn't be surprised if Javy really decides to go to the highest bidder in the offseason, assuming he continues to improve his numbers. He has certainly righted the ship to a certain extent, and that may be the first time in a couple years he has done that.
August 2, 201113 yr If he doesnt stay, what similar type of 1 year $7m SP's will be available for next season?

And then say, 'Yo, you be playing in new Marlins stadium. No more heat. Miami. Close to PR. Beach.''
August 3, 201113 yr I'd hate to question this but how much does Edwin leaving hamper the possibility of him wanting to stay on here? Remember Edwin was a key point in him signing for 2011.
August 3, 201113 yr I think if the marlins offer him a contract next season, he'll take it unless it's something like league min. This is considering the fact Edwin is gone as well because I honestly believe Miami is about the only place he wants to play at this stage in his career plus he'll be on a contending team (he'd be on one this year too if that weird June could be magically erased - we'd be what 18 games over .500 or something?). So if Javy actually wants to play - and that's a big if as well because he stressed last offseason he only wants to go year-by-year from here on out - I think we'll see him in Miami again.
