Please have Volstad join Wes Helms...

and then the Marlins will start ????? With the exception of a few pitches Volstad did better today than in his recent starts, I still see him as a solid #4-5 starter down the line, but to seriously just release a 24 y/o kid would be crazy

No, you don't release Volstad. He's still only 24 and at times can show signs of being decent. Our pitching depth is so garbage right now that we can't afford to lose a starter.

I don't see why we shouldn't hold onto Volstad at the moment.

We wont have enough reasonable talent to fill a roster come September.

Volstad actually pitched pretty well today. Nice movement on his breaking pitches.

But the HRs are a problem. Especially for a sinker ball pitcher. I still can't believe how HR efficient he was as a rookie.

Volstad likely won't be here next year, anyway.

Do you mean here in the majors or with the Marlins altogether?

For all the second chances the team gave a worse Andrew Miller, I doubt they are ready to part with Volstad just yet.

Volstad won't be making league minimum anymore next year.

With payroll going up next year, there will be better options that the Marlins will seek in free agency. It's pretty clear that they're content on the field with most of the positions, even if some fans disagree. Money will be spent on starting pitching.

Volstad won't be kept in the minors at his expected salary.

He'll either be traded for crap or he'll be let go.

If so, HALLELUJAH!

Really ? That would require spending even more in FA. Can we think he's going to do that ? At least 2 new starting pitchers, and probably either a 3rd baseman or a CF'er ? That is a lot of FA money, and probably too rich for Loria's taste in spending. We may be moving into a new stadium, but we still have the same owner. A leopard doesn't change his spots that easily.

Color me skeptical until I see the signed FA contracts. I just am still having a hard time trusting Loria. But lets all hope he is a man of his word and pony's up for some nice FA signings.

Does everyone still see a lot of potential in our young core, and is this just a sophomore slump ? Did we (and the FO) overestimate their real potential ?

They've been pretty consistent with their comments about raising payroll.

They've said all along that payroll will be more middle of the pack with the new stadium.

They've locked up plenty of core players.

They've even spent pretty significant money on relievers, in comparison to the past.

I'm not sure why we shouldn't believe their comments based on what they've done the past couple of years and what they've said.

The sophomores haven't even been the real problem.

Mike Stanton has been great.

Gaby Sanchez has had his recent struggles, but has had a solid season, overall.

Even Logan Morrison's overall hitting stats aren't terrible.

I think they're fine.

Speaking of Stanton:

Mike Stanton 21 walks since All-Star break leads all Major League hitters. Also 9 HR in 2d half, 4th-most in the NL #Marlins
