LoMo for Gio Gonzalez?

Featured Replies

And it hinders your ability to make moves long term, since Hanley and JJ are still locked up, Anibal and Gio would need to be extended, and Stanton and the relievers are going to be arbitration eligible in a couple of years. This franchise is probably never going to be able to do consistent $100+ million payrolls, so trading young, cheap assets and taking on a $20 million/year contract simply isn't the right move.

The rest of the post is really good, but I did want to isolate this part. Anibal and Gio get extended if it makes sense, and if it makes sense, then it's not necessarily a liability. Basically, the reasoning in the 1st sentence doesn't feel completely sound.

Well, Gio has 4 arbitration years, so his salary is going to continue to climb.

My point is that you're shedding club-controlled players making the minimum for guys who have significant paydays coming up. It limits flexibility.

Right, but you're only willing to continue to pay them if you value their services at those prices more than you do the flexibility. However, it is true that you'd probably want to extend them or else risk paying a lot more $$$. And if you extend them, then you do have to stomach the risk of them busting, at which point the lack of flexibility can hurt badly. So, yeah.

I have a hard time believing, if we don't offer LoMo, that we can make the best package available for the A's. There has to be other teams out there willing to part with better prospects for a player like Gio.

True, but I believe Gaby would be pretty enticing and could be a centerpiece. The A's have Ka'aihue now but that's hardly anything.

Gaby + Hand could be a start. MAYBE throw in Matty D. I'd be reluctant to give up James and Fernandez, but maybe someone like Raussman could complete a deal.

Gaby would not be the centerpiece for any significant trade.

Maybe not a centerpiece but a significant component in a package, include Leo Nuñez/Juan Oviedo and Rick Nolasco and that should suffice

You live in a fantasy world if you think we can get a fantastic young starter, or anything else too valuable, for two contracts we don't even want plus an average 1B with little to no upside.

gaby is more of an AL player I think it would be a fair trade...Marlins can always eat part of Ricky's salary if it comes to that...a 1b/DH, A reliever and a starter for 1 LHP and maybe a throw-in...Gio is not flaw-less his control is a significant concern

Gaby had a really, really good dWAR last year. he needs to be an infielder. not in the AL.
