Posted November 13, 201113 yr Lots of penciling in JJ as the Marlins number one guy next season ... is that reasonable? Or is it more reasonable to assume that his problems will continue and the Marlins are going to need a lot more pitching help? I'd go with the latter. His inability to bounce back last season tells me that his career is precarious at this point. Three quality starters should be the top objective this off-season. Reyes and other offensive players shouldn't even be considered until the pitching is addressed. James Shields in a trade? Sure. Gonzales in another deal, for sure. Buehrle for over $12 million? Not so sure about that. Carlos Zambrano? Pretty sure there is no need for a DH in Miami.
November 13, 201113 yr Considering the money he's making and the talent he has, there's no reason to not try your best every year to put JJ as the #1 pitcher.
November 13, 201113 yr what do the marlins or josh johnson gain by rushing back when the marlins are 20+ games under .500? josh will be the opening day starter barring a set back because when he healthy, he is better than most everyone else who can pitch a baseball and if he gets injured again, so be it but you cant plan on your players being hurt
November 13, 201113 yr Lets not act like he wasn't dominating before his injury. No one could hit him.
November 13, 201113 yr I agree pitching has to be reinforced, JJ who didn't have anything majorily wrong with his arm (according to team Drs'.and James Andrews) missed the last four months and the FO can't be satisfied with the in house starting rotation candidates. If JJ is healthy and Anibal pitches like he did when throwing 1 hitters or something consistent along those lines they could still use two more starters. Thats hoping Ricky or Volstad step up to fill the five hole in rotation, Buehrle would be a big boost, but they could still use a closer with the player to be named later status unclear.
November 14, 201113 yr I'm pretty confident that JJ will come out dominating at the start of next year, throwing just enough innings per start to let the bullpen blow it, and then when his shoulder doesn't feel perfect because HE THROWS A BASEBALL IN AN UNNATURAL MOTION FOR A LIVING he will be shut down in order to protect him for some undefined future moment.

I'm pretty confident that Sirspud will continue to be a misanthrope throughout the season.
November 14, 201113 yr Maybe the solution is to not let JJ pitch until August, then we can get a healthy JJ for the last half of the season...he should crap out again during his final inning in what will surely be our next world series victory.
November 14, 201113 yr I'm pretty confident that JJ will come out dominating at the start of next year, throwing just enough innings per start to let the bullpen blow it,. Also, he averaged 6 2/3 innings per start last year. That is bad?

Also, he averaged 6 2/3 innings per start last year. That is bad? No, but his run support of -3.7(yes, negative) runs per game qualifies him as the unluckiest pitcher in baseball.
November 14, 201113 yr Negative run support you say? Does this mean Marlin bats were the only ones hitting Josh Johnson? Because I know the other team wasn't.
November 14, 201113 yr Negative run support you say? Does this mean Marlin bats were the only ones hitting Josh Johnson? Because I know the other team wasn't. Yep, the only pitcher in history to have negative run support.

According to Rotographs Volstad was the unluckiest pitcher in baseball tied with Burnett in the AL.
November 14, 201113 yr According to Rotographs Volstad was the unluckiest pitcher in baseball tied with Burnett in the AL. Yes. But Chris Volstad, along with being unlucky by run support, sucks. So it works out.
