New Ballpark Might House Homeless

Featured Replies

I don't see a problem with helping the homeless out when the ballpark isn't being used. Like the article said, just line a corridor with some cots and blankets when there isn't anything else going on in the ballpark. Of course loitering may become an issue, but I'm sure they could figure something out to keep that from becoming a major problem.

Maybe Im a cold hearted bastard and see the worst of people but loitering would definitely become a problem and I could see crime going up after games are let out.

Just the nature of the beast, People spending alot of money and generally carrying alot of money go to games. I can just see muggings becoming a problem and panhandling getting out of control.

And for all you politically correct out there, NO not all homeless are lowlifes. Like I said its jut the nature of the beast.

Isnt the old Florida Panthers stadium sitting empty? No problem with using that.

You make a valid point. Safety is definitely something that needs to be taken into consideration. In that case, the off-season would probably be the best time to utilize the stadium as a homeless shelter.

Cool. Miami. Homeless.

You aren't off-base. Speaking for myself here, the last thing I want to be faced with if I am spending a ton of money to fly over from the bahamas for a game is a buncha homeless people. I have to deal with them enough as it is down here.

I'm against this because if they want a homeless shelter then just f***ing build one. The government spends money on dumber sh*t than homeless shelters anyways.

If they are so upset about tourist taxes going to sports venues, then change it.

They don't need to build a homeless shelter. They can use the stadiums. It's really not that big of a deal.

And they're going to do what with them when it's game time?

Oh that's right, herd them out so they can stand outside the fence and beg for money from all the non-season ticket fans who have to walk from wherever.

The thought of the new Miami Marlins experience is just getting better by the day. :boxed

Use the stadium in the off-season and when the season starts switch to another stadium.

Can't wait.

Stop exaggerating with this crap. There's no way it would get like that.

Where is that anyways?

People who evacuated/lost their homes due to Katrina.

So yes, this pic was an extreme exaggeration.

I'm sure they'll gladly oblige. You gonna pick up the tab to move them, or are they?

Besides, it'll take the whole season to get the urine smell out. (Respirator Day giveaway, anyone? :D )

I think you're exaggerating. Anyways, desperate times call for desperate measures. There's a lot of homeless nowadays, and in modern society, they should be able to have a place to sleep besides a park bench. This is a cheap solution to an unfortunate problem.

Is it?

Who's going to pay to keep the lights on, the food warm, the a/c cold, and the water running?

Who's going to pay the service workers and extra security details (in addition to regular nightly patrols when unoccupied)?

Who's going to pay for the cleanup before each game?

This is all well-intentioned with undoubtedly unintended consequences. They proclaim it should be a homeless shelter because it accepted taxpayer money, yet they'll end up putting out even more taxpayer money to make it happen.

Should I have to allow the homeless into my residence because I received the First-Time Homebuyer Credit?

Can't wait.

And I'm sure there are plenty of abandoned buildings that could be turned over to homeless shelters pretty cheaply instead of turning a state of the art beautiful stadium into a crime ridden homeless haven

You don't think the homeless deserve state of the art beautiful stadiums to sleep in?

What an asshole.

The teams have to pay for the necessary accommodations according to the article.

The teams have to pay for the necessary accommodations

The law says nothing about teams being responsible for the accommodations. It only states that "any professional sports facility constructed with financial assistance from the State of Florida shall be designated as a shelter site"..."in accordance with the criteria of locally existing homeless shelter programs." Miami-Dade county both establishes their criteria, and runs them with taxpayer money. Nothing in the law changes that with regard to who usually uses the property.

288.1166 Professional sports facility; designation as shelter site for the homeless; establishment of local programs.—Any professional sports facility constructed with financial assistance from the State of Florida shall be designated as a shelter site for the homeless in accordance with the criteria of locally existing homeless shelter programs, except when the facility is otherwise contractually obligated for a specific event or activity. Should a local program not be in existence in the facility’s area, such program shall be established in accordance with normally accepted criteria as defined by the county or its designee.
