Arbitration buyout - Stanton

Featured Replies

Mike Stanton will get a big contract, but not from the Yankees but from his hometown team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Marlins monthly show last year had an issue with Stanton and his words & demeanor when at Dodger Stadium told me all I needed to see.

He said his dream is to one day wear Dodger Blue.

As for what bad moves has the front office made, well what GOOD move have they made in the 1st round of the draft ? Every single pick has been a bust or close to it. They have made 14 picks (5 in 2005 and ALL of them busts) since they have been here and at least 10 of them have been horrible.

Even with just one of those guys making it as a starter in our rotation Buherle and his big contract are not necessary, and maybe, just maybe you spend that money on better scouting ? Which I have been told time and again on this board we are some of the lowest spenders in scouting (which to me is stupifying since that to me would be the one area you'd want to spend money on if you are a cash-strapped franchise as we have been in the past).

He can get that contract in 2019 if he wants to go there. He wouldn't pass up a 6-7 year deal that sets him up for life.

Also, if you look at the drafting trends in MLB, the Marlins draft pretty middle of the road. They absolutely blow their first round picks for the most part, but they massively make it up in the later rounds (Stanton, Morrison, Cishek, Coghlan, Gaby, etc). You can't really criticize being average. You just hope for better and that Yelich, Fernandez, Dominguez, James, Rasmussen, etc develop into average/above average starters.

I would say a perpetual philosophy of not buying out young talent's arbitration is a massive problem. I do understand the prior payroll issues with the stadium, but that's over now. It's time to be smart.

I understood it as we were one of the worst spenders on draft picks, not necessarily scouting.

Regardless, both of those activities provide returns only several years into the future, and even then there is tons of variability in the draft process. So, I would argue that scouting isn't a good use of scarce money for a cash-strapped franchise.

It's not up to Stanton to decide what teams offer him mega-deal contracts. He could talk about the Dodgers all he wants, but nobody can say with any certainty that the Dodgers will have the resources or the desire to make a competitive offer for Giancarlo when the time comes.

I'm just hoping we don't had the same issue that we had with Cabrera. I know we have more money to spend this time, but Cabrera performed so well that by the time his arbitration years were running up, he was in line for a $200 million contract.

I agree with lou that we could get Stanton signed by the end of this season for 7 years $80-85 million. Anybody making league minimum would be foolish to pass that up. Plus, a 6 or 7 year deal now allows Stanton to get a humongous deal in his prime at the age of 28-29 years old and set himself up for life. The upscale style deal for Stanton would ensure he's making 8 figures by the finals years of his deal.

Seriously, getting this done at the latest this offseason is a win/win for everybody involved. And I mean everybody.

BroncoBob thinks we should wait, so ha.

Nope. Said in the past that I think something will get done this off season at the earliest. And if he keeps up this pace then I think it will. So, ha.

The only obstacle would be their projections of their finances beyond this season. "Money coming in will equal money going out" is their mantra. Looking at our current payroll and assuming no higher level trades will be taking place, I could see them hesitating for a year or so to let things (financially) level out. Whether anyone sitting in front of a TV thinks that is a mstake or not is quite irrelevant. It's the way they do things.

You don't think we'll try to keep JJ and Hanley at least as well as Stanton, Reyes and LoMo?

Not the point, but regardless Reyes is signed for 5 more seasons, Lomo is under club control for 4 more years. They aren't going anywhere. JJ is up in 2, Hanley in 3. When looking at longterm payroll, Stanton would start getting into "double digit" millions 3-4 years down the road, so that would line up with when everyone but Reyes is off the books. i.e., the books are clean to move forward and do whatever. They have to account for Stanton in these plans, and they have a great opportunity to do that right now. I have no idea if they intend to keep JJ or Hanley when their contracts are up, their performance will dictate that.

But the point is, Mike Stanton is f***ing awesome, the best player on the team now, and will be for quite some time. They need to lock him up right now, and who cares if that means other guys can't be resigned 3-4 years down the road (which it wouldn't be as payroll is looking good, and it looks like they will get some guys from the minors, i.e. cheap, from Yelich, Fernandez, other pitchers for backend rotation and pen, etc. to fill holes). He is the guy you build a team around. This .255 hitting Hanley is not. This is a big deal. Waiting will cost them tens of millions, and I am not being dramatic. Stanton is on the verge of bashing himself into the top stratosphere of comparables, and the time is ripe to lock him up for 6-7 years right now while you can steal get him at "cargo" money. Big big big deal. Marlins are foolish not to do this ASAP. This is also why organizations like Arizona (Montero), Pittsburgh (McCutchen), and Baltimore (Jones), are starting to lock up their guys. The longer they wait, the more it is going to cost for these 'centerpiece' type players.

Win-Win. Stanton locks himself up for life with $75-80 million and becomes a free agent in his prime 29/30 in hopes of a mega contract, and Marlins get a discounted Stanton to build around. Hopefully they learn from their massive mistake with Cabrera.

I agree with everything right up until that Cabrera thing. Two totally different circumstances that really aren't comparable. Not even going into the amount of cash we had to spend at that time, Cabrera's whole attitude on and off the field was a draw back to the team and it was very evident he wasn't going to sign here long term.
