May 26, 201214 yr For the love of god front office, what more do you need to see? You (kind of) have the leverage 1 1/2 years until he hits arbitration, he is going to make good on the contract hitting .240, let alone the ludicrous rates he is displaying right now. By the time he becomes super expensive Bell, Buerhle, Johnson, Nolasco, Hanley, etc will be off the books so you can build around him and Reyes efficiently. You need to do this now so you can honestly compare him to Bruce/Upton/Cargo levels, before he starts comping closer to Fielder/Howard/Cabrera (which is coming fast). 7 years, 80 bills just like Cargo. How the hell is he turning that down making league minimum through 2013? If you do nothing, he is going to make $35-40 million in arbitration, and then command a Prince Fielder deal (probably more as he is younger and can play defense). DO IT NOW. IT'S A WIN WIN.
May 26, 201214 yr You don't think we'll try to keep JJ and Hanley at least as well as Stanton, Reyes and LoMo?
May 27, 201214 yr I'm starting to think the Marlins are not serious about keeping Stanton. He'll be playing for the New York Yankees in 2014. We seem to be interested in what we can get for Stanton rather than what we can do to keep him.

One of the two. [Edit - 2017] The Marlins HAVE brought up talks to extend him, this off-season they did. They don't have to do it yet.

I have no idea what the Marlins are waiting for, but I'm pretty confident it isn't for that reason.
May 27, 201214 yr We'll resign him. Question is how long will the contract be. Im in favor of extending him until he is 30.
May 27, 201214 yr We'll resign him. Question is how long will the contract be. Im in favor of extending him until he is 30. That would put him to make big money for the end of his career as long as his production remains, which is definately a positive. Puts himself in a position like prince or Pujols.
May 27, 201214 yr I'm just hoping we don't had the same issue that we had with Cabrera. I know we have more money to spend this time, but Cabrera performed so well that by the time his arbitration years were running up, he was in line for a $200 million contract. I agree with lou that we could get Stanton signed by the end of this season for 7 years $80-85 million. Anybody making league minimum would be foolish to pass that up. Plus, a 6 or 7 year deal now allows Stanton to get a humongous deal in his prime at the age of 28-29 years old and set himself up for life. The upscale style deal for Stanton would ensure he's making 8 figures by the finals years of his deal. Seriously, getting this done at the latest this offseason is a win/win for everybody involved. And I mean everybody.
May 27, 201214 yr Seriously, getting this done at the latest this offseason is a win/win for everybody involved. And I mean everybody. Everyone that's a Marlins fan or member. Everyone else, especially next year with that interleague all year? Big loss. Yes sir.

May 27, 201214 yr Author You don't think we'll try to keep JJ and Hanley at least as well as Stanton, Reyes and LoMo? Not the point, but regardless Reyes is signed for 5 more seasons, Lomo is under club control for 4 more years. They aren't going anywhere. JJ is up in 2, Hanley in 3. When looking at longterm payroll, Stanton would start getting into "double digit" millions 3-4 years down the road, so that would line up with when everyone but Reyes is off the books. i.e., the books are clean to move forward and do whatever. They have to account for Stanton in these plans, and they have a great opportunity to do that right now. I have no idea if they intend to keep JJ or Hanley when their contracts are up, their performance will dictate that. But the point is, Mike Stanton is f***ing awesome, the best player on the team now, and will be for quite some time. They need to lock him up right now, and who cares if that means other guys can't be resigned 3-4 years down the road (which it wouldn't be as payroll is looking good, and it looks like they will get some guys from the minors, i.e. cheap, from Yelich, Fernandez, other pitchers for backend rotation and pen, etc. to fill holes). He is the guy you build a team around. This .255 hitting Hanley is not. This is a big deal. Waiting will cost them tens of millions, and I am not being dramatic. Stanton is on the verge of bashing himself into the top stratosphere of comparables, and the time is ripe to lock him up for 6-7 years right now while you can steal get him at "cargo" money. Big big big deal. Marlins are foolish not to do this ASAP. This is also why organizations like Arizona (Montero), Pittsburgh (McCutchen), and Baltimore (Jones), are starting to lock up their guys. The longer they wait, the more it is going to cost for these 'centerpiece' type players. Win-Win. Stanton locks himself up for life with $75-80 million and becomes a free agent in his prime 29/30 in hopes of a mega contract, and Marlins get a discounted Stanton to build around. Hopefully they learn from their massive mistake with Cabrera.

May 27, 201214 yr Who the f*** is Mike Stanton? The lefty reliever that was on the Braves in their 91 World Series run?
May 27, 201214 yr Judging by the past mistakes, fire sales, and stupid decisions that the organization has made, I still say they will wait until they can trade him for a few draft picks when arbitration comes around, or they will simply wait so long that Giancarlo will become unaffordable, and make his way to the NY Yankees or the Phillies instead. I want Giancarlo to be down in Miami for another 8 seasons (the best years of his remaining career), and I hope the Miami Marlins prove me wrong and show us that they are different this time around....but if you've been a Marlins fan since the early 1990's, you've seen enough stupid and boneheaded moves (and too many fire sales.)

May 27, 201214 yr Aside from the whole Miguel Cabrera situation (which was terrible), what glaring mistakes has this front office made, really?
May 27, 201214 yr Make it happen. I want Stanton in a Miami uniform for a looooooong time. You want me to fap?
