Is Logan Morrison the new Jeremy Hermida?

Featured Replies

Stanton is actually an OF'er.

I realize Morrison is not a natural outfielder and should be playing 1b, but I just don't get the "wearing his legs down" thing.

LF at Marlins Park isn't like the average LF.

so we'll run a 35+ year old guy out there.

.

To be clear, I don't think LoMo should play outfield. I never said that. All I said was that I don't get why it should wear him down to play there.

He's not a good outfielder, I get it. He's slow and doesn't get good jumps and reads.

Those are the reasons he shouldn't be out there, not because it will wear out his legs.

Not everyone is physically gifted the same way. A guy who has never played the outfield and has had knee surgeries already probably has no business being there. The knee problems are an indication that it might just be "wearing out his legs."

Well first off it was all down hill for Hermida after his first AB, he was never going to live up to the hype. I think it boils down to expectations of each of these players. Hermida was compared to a Paul O"neil type player when drafted and never developed to that level. Morrison was a draft and follow( one of the last) and would certainly have been drafted higher if the Marlins hadn't signed him, but other than Greensboro, where everyone homers has not shown any significant power for a first baseman. So I guess Morrison will be like Hermida in that he won't live up to the expectations of his former prospect status.

He matched his Greensboro total in 2011. So, he can definitely be a 25 homer guy, I think. If he stays healthy.

One would have hoped that, like many legitimate prospects, he would not only meet his minor league power numbers, but actually exceed them as he filled out throughout his twenties. I'd be glad if he managed 25 homers, especially in our ridiculously spacious park, but I still fantasize what it would be like to have a first basemen hit like a first basemen.

I think LoMo gets too much of a raw deal around these parts for his injuries. Seeing him for a full season at 1B would be nice.

For what it's worth, I believe Lomo will he a better hitter then Gaby Sanchez ever would have, but probably will be average defensively at 1B. I hope he can develop a strong defensive game though.

I believe his upbringing will make him strive harder to succeed, much more so than Hermida. I think LoMo has had to work his ass off each step of the way, whereas Hermidas talent took him to the big leagues, but his drive left him in the minors.

With that said, if Hermida ever puts it together on some teams AAA team I think he'll make himself a legitimate ML player

LoMo was advertised by the FO and people in the know as a GG caliber 1B when he was coming up through the minors. Defensively, far better than Gaby. But when the time came in that fateful ST, he left his bat at home and Gaby brought his. Also, FWIW, running around the OF didn't hurt his knees. Playing all out and running into those walls did. Playing 1B now should help that problem, and with healthy kness his bat should be back. All we can hope is that the "shoulds" actually pan out.

In left field, you run probably a good 25 miles more during games [i'm probably exaggerating there, or maybe not!] over a season than at first base. He won't wear down nearly as much playing first base just because of not having to run over 150 feet to get to a ball in the corner or gap multiple times. Plus, yes, less walls at first base.

I didn't make a comparison in the amount of running around between the two positions. That would be silly. I clearly said that wasn't the reason for the knee problems, hitting the walls was. Maybe all that running AFTER going all out and trying to move walls made a difference, but still the main reason was running into them in the first place.

And why have I been getting this "blockquote-class" stuff lately when I post? I also have to edit just to get my posts seperated from the posts I am replying to. It's annoying. Is there some kind of set up that somehow reset itself?
