May 16, 201313 yr Brantly can get better instruction on defense on the MLB level from Redmond/Mathis than with anything else down in the minors. No brainer. Not to mention he's the only catcher in our system that knows how to swing a bat besides Realmuto, who is light years away it seams...
May 17, 201313 yr Olivo was brought in as a part time replacement until Mathis came back, but if room is needed on the 25 man roster it wouldn't surprise me to see Brantly sent down to work on his defense. Just sayin... Yeah, that will never happen. And it shouldn't happen. Whether it should or shouldn't is quite irrelevant. LoMo is coming back soon, so 1B for Olivo is also irrelevant. If room is needed, I can see them sending him down for some much needed 1 on 1 instruction at and behind the plate. The fact that it shouldn't happen is precisely why it will not happen. Although they make me think otherwise sometimes, the Marlins aren't that dumb. Sending Brantly down purely to "work on his defense" does not do much to benefit either the team or the player. Olivo and Mathis don't bring much value to the table, so it's in everyone's best interests to have Brantly work on things at the major league level. For what it's worth, Brantly's CS% right now is awesome and way above league average. Or is Brantly going to become your next Gaby Sanchez or something? That's when you lost all credibility with your defensive evaluation.
May 17, 201313 yr Yeah throwing out runners has been a nice surprise actually. I think most of us understood he was going to have some defensive issues to work through. But Bronco's always had problems with catchers who weren't thought of as "defense-first" (and I realize how that sounds for a guy hitting .240), he never liked John Baker either. Anyhow, with the team being this bad Brantly's got time to work on it. So Mathis returns to the lineup, 0-4 and hits into a double-play with one out & bases loaded. Red after the game said he didn't consider pinch-hitting Brantly in that situation because of Mathis' nine years of big league experience. Funny, if you can glean ANYTHING from Mathis' 9 years of big league experience it's that he's a bad hitter. And 2 batters prior he has Ozuna drop a sac bunt with Coghlan and Mathis on deck. yyyyeeeeaaaahhhh.

I think it's more that he has biases towards certain players or doesn't know how to evaluate defense. He complained endlessly here about Gaby Sanchez's "poor" defense while Gaby was actually one of the best defensive first basemen in baseball. I'm not necessarily saying that Brantly is going to be a good defender, but that I don't see the rationality in saying that he should be demoted just because he defense needs work.
May 17, 201313 yr I didn't watch the game yesterday, but just read that Redmond had Ozuna bunt with guys on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs which inevitably led to Mathis being up and inevitably led to a double play.. What the hell is Redmond doing? His quote about the career .550 OPSer or whatever is absolutely stupid. “Mathis, this guy has been in the big leagues for seven years. He knows how to hit in those situations and that’s the guy I wanted at the plate. He could have very easily lifted a ball to center." His coaching yesterday (that with leaving Cishek in and pull Dietrich for Polanco) was moronic at best.
May 17, 201313 yr Yeah, I haven't been pleased with Redmond at all so far this season. I'm really baffled by this have Ozuna (our clean up hitter) sac bunt thing. I can't think of a more stupider move with Coghlan and Mathis hitting behind him.
May 17, 201313 yr yeah that was awful. the Dietrich-Polanco thing, eh I would prefer they just give Dietrich the shot but I have much less problem with that since I don't think he hits lefties particularly well and Polanco at least usually has a clue. But the Ozuna sac, jesus wtf. Don't be this guy Red.

But the Ozuna sac, jesus wtf. Don't be this guy Red. True. Polanco is actually doing pretty well against lefties (.836 OPS). I still hate the move though. Red is totally being that guy. I know he's done something similar before this year and has consistently made questionable moves. He's learning too, I guess...
May 17, 201313 yr At least we know Ozuna can crush Chapman! Lol Yeah, I wasn't happy with Red's managing last night, either. I was fine with him pinch hitting for Dietrich, but would have rather had Ruggiano in that spot over Polanco. One could probably say it made sense defensively for why he put Polanco in for Dietrich, but all he would have had to do is move Ruggiano out to center and put Polanco to third, anyways. No issue with him hitting for Dietrich, just not the guy he used for it. Both struck out, so didn't make a difference last night, anyways.
