May 13, 201412 yr No. That's going to be an overpay, and we were fringe competitors even with Fernandez. You maybe trade a few complimentary players at the deadline and hope that with the young guys coming up this year and next, the team is good enough next year with half a season of Fernandez.
May 13, 201412 yr Samardzija's value has never been higher, bad time to trade for him. They'd try and empty our system. and what Entendu said.
May 13, 201412 yr I think It's good time to acquire him. We have lots of pitcher with high class. That's nice fit for Cubbie.
May 13, 201412 yr That was one of the dumbest things I've ever read and I feel like a dumber person for having read it. "Samardzija is an ace" LOL I'm not surprised that Wild Card would like that article.

May 13, 201412 yr For the right price, why not? As Admin says, the price is artificially high now because Samardzija is pitching over his head.
May 13, 201412 yr Author As Admin says, the price is artificially high now because Samardzija is pitching over his head. And if the price is too high, you don't make a deal. Pretty simple.
May 13, 201412 yr And if the price is too high, you don't make a deal. Pretty simple. There's also no point in expending any trade pieces on another middle of the rotation guy for a season where the Marlins are highly unlikely to make the playoffs regardless. They should be considering the MarlinsLou approach and getting a better picture of Stanton's future and orchestrating their moves around that. If that means building for 2016, then so be it. There will be a point this season where it will be smarter to trade guys like Cishek than add pieces like Samardzija who are pitching over their heads and likely to walk at the end of the season.

You think everyone is pitching over their head. Samardzija has long been considered a top arm and it's likely he is starting to put it together. He would also be here more than half a season because he can't "walk", which is promising. But whatever.
May 13, 201412 yr Samardzija is totally pitching over his head He is, but not by that much. Either way, they shouldn't go after him. Too expensive. We are sellers at this point and it's just a matter of who we sell (goodbye cishek. I will miss you).

He would also be here more than half a season because he can't "walk", which is promising. But whatever. LOL. So you think that Samardzija is a 1.45 ERA pitcher? The peripherals and advanced statistics blatantly tell you that he's pitching above his head, but of course you wouldn't bother to look at them. He has an 3.51 xFIP that owes a large part to the fact that his HR/FB low is crazy low for his career numbers and MLB in general. As soon as that figure comes back down to earth, his ERA will balloon back up and he will look more like the middle of the rotation arm that he is. Certainly not the "ace" that Frisaro thinks he is. His LOB% and BABIP numbers are also better than his career numbers would project. There are tons of signs telling you that he's pitching far over his head and his going to crash down to earth at some point soon. He's not a bad pitcher, but people are overreacting after a lucky start over a small sample size.

May 13, 201412 yr Samardzija has the 3rd lowest HR/FB rate in the National League. The leader is another guy who is pitching above his head--Aaron Harang.
May 13, 201412 yr Author Of course he won't sustain a 1.45 ERA, nobody can. But he probably isn't as bad as you think, either. You think everyone is on the cusp of imploding.
May 13, 201412 yr Samardzija has the 3rd lowest HR/FB rate in the National League. The leader is another guy who is pitching above his head--Aaron Harang. Well the Harang thing is just ridiculous. The difference is Smarge can be a good pitcher and is still pretty young. He's got some other things going for him besides that completely and utterly unsustainable ERA. BTW I'm not trying to agree with wild card or anything, but I do think Smarge is a pretty decent pitcher and that perhaps he's turned a corner this year. Regardless, I don't want him on the fish unless it's for Brian Flynn or something stupid like that
May 13, 201412 yr I never said he was bad or will implode. I'm saying that he will regress back to the pitcher the stats say he is--somewhere in the 3.50-4.50 ERA range. That's not ace caliber.

Regardless, I don't want him on the fish unless it's for Brian Flynn or something stupid like that Yeah, he's a decent pitcher. A 3.75 pitcher is decent, but I'm sensing that some of you think he's much better than that even. It's not out of the question that he's closer to the line that he put up in his last 2 seasons as a starter--more in the 4.10 range. The peripherals don't show a whole lot of actual (not luck based) improvement. The walks are down a little, yes, but the strikeouts are down even more. Frisaro and some of you here are really overrating Samardzija based on what he's done so far this season based on a small sample size and unsustainable peripherals.

May 13, 201412 yr Based on what he has put together so far, that would be imploding. If that's how you define "imploding," then the stats absolutely say that he will implode. That's not me being "negative" or a "debbie downer." That's me simply communicating what the facts (the statistics) are loudly and definitively saying about Samardzija's performance thus far. Frisaro clearly did not even bother to look at the stats before he proclaimed that Samardzija was an ace.

Let me ask, do you think it's impossible that he posts an ERA under 3.50 and he could actually just be improving?
May 13, 201412 yr Let me ask, do you think it's impossible that he posts an ERA under 3.50 and he could actually just be improving? It's not impossible that he posts an ERA under 3.50 but he would actually need to start improving for that to happen. The stats show that his actual abilities have not improved from the last two seasons, but rather that he's reaping the benefits of some good luck that isn't sustainable (HR/FB, LOB%, BABIP, etc.). There's nothing in the numbers to suggest that he's a better pitcher in 2014 than he was in 2013 or 2012. That could change, but it's yet to be seen.
