incredibly small sample doesnt take away from how good he was in new orleans. lots of people struggle as september call ups at the end of the year and then succeed the next year

I disagree that you debunked that theory. His velocity was clearly not that same when he was up with us in Sept. He generally lives around 92-94 MPH and he was consistently 88-91 MPH in those starts. He had an awesome year in NO last season, and he's been doing fine again this year.

Flynn's FIP has consistently been in the mid to high 3's in the minor leagues.

I don't think anyone is saying he is anything more than a #4 starter. I think we could use that #4 guy right now. Certainly better than the #12 starter Randy Wolf.

I remember when many on here thought that Jose's ceiling was that of a #2. They were whining that we didn't have a true ace prospect in the minor leagues. Well, how did that turn out? No one here thought Jose would be one of the top five pitchers in baseball. The development of prospects isn't an exact science. That's why they are prospects and they have to be developed in the minor leagues. I don't care about any FIP, XFIP, WAR or any other saber stat. Some prospects flop and others surprise you and exceed expectations. The problem that I have with you statheads (not meant as an insult) is that you tend to write players off before even giving them a chance or before even seeing them play.

Jose Fernandez was the #8 overall prospect in baseball. We all understood how good he could be, but at 20 years old nobody really knows how good a player they will turn out to become.

 

Brian Flynn's a decent pitcher, and he's a become a much better prospect than what he was when we got him as a minor throw in during the Anibal Sanchez/Omar Infante trade. But his ceiling is definitely limited.

 

That being said, it shouldn't prevent him from getting another chance to prove himself in the majors. DeSclafani, who is starting tonight, is a low ceiling guy who is more than likely a bullpen arm, but we're giving him a little shot tonight anyway.

 

Also, whenever you include in your argument "I don't care about this stat or that stat or whatever stat", your argument isn't and likely shouldn't be taken all too seriously. A players ability is reflected in their pure numbers plain and simple.

I don't see how you can put Jose Fernandez into the same conversation as Brian Flynn. That's just dumb. I also question the validity of your claim that people underestimated Fernandez and saw his ceiling as a number two. If anyone said that, I doubt it was a "stats person," whom you are clearly trying to criticize here.
