I don't mind bunting in that situation or with the pitcher, and that's pretty much it...when you have a struggling speedster and two men on and you bunt, you move the runners over and, if it's a good bunt, might even beat it out. I don't like to see bunting with anyone except the pitcher if there is only a player on first.

There are a few potential outcomes when you bunt:

-Base hit/error that allows baserunners to advance and the batter to reach.

-Successful sacrifice that allows baserunners to move up, batter is out.

-Strike out/foul out/pop out/fielder's choice that leaves a runner on the same base as before, but with one more out.

-Pop out/hard bunt double play that erases the baserunners and the batter.

So, two really bad outcomes, one pretty good one, and one mostly neutral, somewhat negative one. Giving up an out to move just one base over, even if it were a certainty, still usually brings your win probability down.

Luck was on our side tonight. There were lots of well hit balls by the Phillies that were either right at a Marlin player or a Marlin player made a great play on. The catch in deep center by Marisnick, the play by McGehee on the shot off Dunn, and the play at SS by Lucas....

Good win. Bats still need to wake up though. Let's hope this win gets us going and we have a good road trip.

Key point there being usually. There are very few situations where bunting is a viable option. The player needs to be good at it, should be speedy, shouldn't be more than two outs, and there needs to be a man on first and second (if only second, I would just swing away). Sure, two of those possible outcomes are bad, but if the guy bunting knows what he's doing, the chances of those two happening are very low.

For me, there is one more thing that is very important as well; it needs to be a low scoring game...like a 2-0 or 1-0 game. Never ever bunt in Colorado.

Really I do agree with you, I don't like bunts myself. However I HATE double plays even more, and there are certain hitters that are just more prone to slapping into a double play than others.

Beautiful! Back to .500 again! It always helps to have a little luck on your side. By no means a dominating outing by Eovaldi, but he made the pitches when he needed them. A gutty performance by Nathan. Clutch hitting by McGehee. Nice work by the pen. And really fine defense by the Fish, all night long.

Well, it was fun doing this with you all. Some really decent guys over here on this board.

McGehee who by D-War sucks defensively? Sorry just couldn't help myself
