You guys are right. He wasn't going to get the out at first anyway, and the mistake didn't allow the runner to advance so it didn't matter. However, with another fielder, Tommy would have said something like, "you HAVE to hold on to that ball" or, "you make that decision BEFORE you get to the bag" or something along those lines.
