Catcher Options?

I believe that Ramon Castro should be given a chance to start. If he goes to jail, i believe we should trade for Bengie Molina of the Angels. His numbers look good and is one of the leaders in the AL in RISP.

Just out of curiosity, why do people knock Fudge (on a baseball basis) for the same things Javi brings to the table. Fudge's numbers last season are brushed aside, but that is the type of season Javy has brought to the table consistently throughout his career. His career averages are 30 HR,97 RBI .287 BA. and .839 OPS, which is all inflated after an inexplicable career year. Last Year, Fudge hit 16 HR, 85 RBI, .297 BA and .843 OPS. A little less power, but close in virtually every other category.

Assuming Javy has a normal season by his standards, he will do slightly better than a Fudge season many were scoffing at. This is not factoring in the clutch hits and immeasurable fan support.

Also, Javy is:

1) Old (Older than Fudge, at 33)

2) Weak Defensively

3) Likely to be Overpaid

This would be a downgrade from Fudge, at (at least) the same price. Is Benito Santiago still available? And are there any strong bullpen possibilities we can use our $7 million towards? Maybe in a trade, with us absorbing some cap?

Scott Sullivan would be an excellent bullpen pickup for the Marlins. Wish Cincy still had him

here is a comparison of how they are now, offensively:

javy in 2003: .328 BA, 43 HR, .378 OBP, .687 SLG, 1.065 OPS. note: hit 43 HR in 129 games!

ivan in 2003: .297 BA, 16 HR, .369 OBP, .474 SLG, .843 OPS.

javy is FAR better offensively... honestly, career comparisons between the two mean little.

lets look at their defensive stats:

javy in 2003: 5 errors, 6 passed balls, 23 CS, .307 CS%

ivan in 2003: 8 errors, 10 passed balls, 20 CS, .333 CS%

as you can see, javy was better defensively as well.

age:

javy is 33 and has caught (been abused) for 1106 games in the bigs. the braves smartly used him conservatively in order to preserve his health.

ivan is 32 and has caught (been abused) for 1565 games in the bigs. he's also had serious injury problems for 3 of his past 4 seasons.

salary:

according to the baltimore sun, lopez is asking for much less than rodriguez is

javy is MUCH better overall than Fudge. in the end, i think we should use that money on a bullpen rather than another star, but i definitely agree with everybody who thinks javy >>> Fudge.

The point is (obviously) to find someone that can fill the catchers spot that C#7 left as well as Fudge did. Kendall cant do that, niether can Molina, Castro, Redmond, or Willingham.

Get Javy!

Exactly :thumbup we couldnt afford to keep Fudge, what makes you think we'll be able to afford Javy

Besides, Javy is cheaper than Fudge, even after Arbi.

Take it for what its worth, but in the Sun-Sentinel article regarding Fudge's departure, the last paragraph had a comment about Lopez being a possibilty.

I think Javy coming here may be possible, but is a stretch.

AL team is much better for his career due to being able to DH.

actually he wants some PT at 1st base....

Vlad is impossible.

shut up and good day. I think you should be very happy that the "Vlad is impossible" comment is coming from WC. If you know what I mean ;)

Kendall had a better ba and obp...he's back...he never hit for that much power anyway.
