Who: Vladimir Guerrero, Expos

Interested: Marlins, Orioles, Yankees, Angels, Braves?, Mariners?

Dec. 10 - The Marlins plan to steer the money that had been set aside to re-sign Pudge Rodriguez toward Guerrero in hopes of persuading the former Expos slugger to consider relocating to South Florida, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Guerrero made $11.5 million last season and would appear to be out of Florida's price range, but the Post indicated the team could construct a "creative contract" tied to the construction of a new stadium, as it did in re-signing Mike Lowell.

The Orioles have been thought to be the frontrunner for Guererro, but the sides have yet to meet face to face. Orioles officials insist that doesn't diminish their position and expect to open formal talks at the winter meetings this weekend.

With Gary Sheffield balking at the Yankees' offer, Guerrero's name has resurfaced as a possibility there. Anaheim also could make a run, although Tuesday's signing of Bartolo Colon could take the Angels out of the running. The Mariners also haven't ruled out making a proposal to Guererro. The Braves have been mentioned as a possible dark-horse candidate, but that talk has fallen to a murmur.

ESPN Insider (with some reformatting so it's more understandable)

Yes, we're currently listed number 1, but I wouldn't read all that much into it until we actually talk to him.

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but all this buzz over the internet about Vlad going to Miami came from one source - the Palm Beach Post story. I personally thought it didn't say anything concrete, nor did it contain any meaningful or relevant quotes. A rush job (I don't like to say hackwork, because I know writers and that's a pretty harsh term).

The point is, always look at where the story comes from. You need independent sources.

ACtually, there was a rumor back last year about us possibly trading for Vlad when the Expos were faced with gutting their then playoff-caliber team. Instead they traded Colon and were fine.

One big reason why the Marlins are a suitor - which neither the Palm Beach Post nor any other media outlet can make up - is the Marlins Front Office. There are many strong ties to Vlad. Fred Ferriera, as everyone now knows, was the scout that signed him. He has been a favorite of Loria and Vlad seems to like him as well. There is a lot of mutually good feeling between the two sides. Beattie, the O's GM, was there when Vlad was, but doesnt have the same draw as the Marlins FO does. And that is one of the main reasons why people have been connecting the O's to Vlad.

Vlad is going to decide between the Marlins and the O's. In fact, Marlins are choice 1 because they have all the intangibles that the O's dont - latin community and fan base, World Series title, a chance to get back there this year (aka young pitching), and a mild media climate (O's have this too). All the Marlins have to do is make a competitive offer and with those previously mentioned intangibles and no state income tax, Vlad could be wearing teal and black. The O's would have to counter with a deal that would blow them away, and seeing that Tejada and Lopez are on the market and possible targets, I doubt the competition will get all that hot from the O's. The only thing that may be guiding them is last year's lesson of losing Pudge to us. They may not want to lose another. We will see...

Well that can mean one of two things:

a) the Orioles had Tejada as a bigger priority

b) they feel they have a better chance of getting Tejada than Vlad

a) could result from Tejada being very affordable - only 8M per season for one of the top 4 SS in the game. (It is a shame, but not at all unforeseeable, that the Muts spent the same money on Kaz Matsui. It doesnt make sense...). And Vlad is going to cost about $4M more...but why would be able to do it?

b) maybe we jumped ahead of them or they know something...maybe talks are intensifying with another team, perhaps us.

This is good news for us Vlad hopefuls...
