Marlins after free-agent closer Benitez

I think Hammonds just learned how to pitch more efficiently with Leo Mazzone in 2002. Maybe he just couldnt pitch in New York, It wouldnt be the first time a pitcher struggled in New York after coming off a good year with another team.

His name is Chris Hammond (no "Hammonds like Jeffery Hammonds)

He had a 2.86 era in 2003 and led all regular yankees reliever with not giving up other pitchers runners.

2002 was an extreme rarity, but 2003 PROVES he can pitcher.

A 2.86 era isn't good enough? The yanks will probably give him away for nothing because everyone thinks he "Struggled." He did very well, I watched or listened to every Yankee game and followed Hammond really closely. Giving up that homer against Varitek and Damon in Boston made everyone think Hammond stinks. He had a 2.86 era and a 1.21 whip, 4.010 K/BB for pete's sake!

Wow I thought Hammonds had an ERA in the high 4's. I guess it was just the media exaggerating on his minor struggles.

If Benetiz can return to the way he pitched for Baltimore, he would make an excellent signing.

Then let Baltimore re-sign him :thumbdown

If Hammond is on the market and the Yanks are paying down a chunk of his contract, he's certainly a good pick-up.

Stark has Troy Percival listed as a trade possibility in the Winter Meetings...

What do you guys think?

WAY too expensive...

If we can get some of Troy's salary paid and not have to give up that much, that sounds like a plan. But on the Benitez note, I think he'll thrive down here away from the media scrutiny of the Big Apple BUT I don't want to make more than a mil investment in him in case our project does not work out.

nice thought, but as Juanky said we would need alot of his salary paid for meaning we would have to give up some stellar prospects......

Troy Percival RHP ANA Signed Feb 2002 - 2 years/$16M

2003: $7.5M (+$1.0M signing bonus)

2004: $7.5M

-No-trade clause to four teams NYY, NYM, TOR and MON

$1.5 is probably going to be his price, and I wouldn't mind giving him that over 2 years.

The reward outweighs the risk.

Here's an idea. If we end up getting an OF, and we move Conine to 1B. We could trade Choi to the Angels for Percival. They are in need of a 1B, and they might be willing to pay some of the salary to get Choi.

I mean we already have a stud 1B in the minors do we really need 2? I know Choi is the left-handed bat we want, but nobody knows if he's even going to start for us next year.

Yeah, I was kind of dreaming about Percival.

On a more realistic note...

Scott Sullivan, anyone?

already signed with KC.

why it wont work...

money

and the Angels have Casey Kochman waiting at 1B

And if Chris HAMMONDS :D is so good, why are you trying to move him? (and by you, I dont necessarily mean YOU). I think we here are pretty familiar with him though, and I wouldnt mind seeing him in our bullpen.

As for Fox being a closer, I agree with Fish4...no thanks. Good set up man, too risky for closer.

If we sign Benitez, it will be a solid move, but I wont like it when it comes to high pressure situations. I had more confidence in Urbina - that said, Benitez could rise to the occasion. You never know...I am just not one of his biggest fans.

i like the idea of us getting benitez. him, fox, a lefty specialist and another solid arm would give us a great bullpen. if we pick up another decent bat, not necessarily vlad (loDuca is fine with me) we're going to be in business.

If Tejera utilizes his stuff, which is great, he could be very good.

Don't rule that out.

Also, don't count Blaine Neal out of anything, either. He had a great rookie campeign in 2002, has great stuff, and if he can regain that form...

agreed, and tejera's curveball is out of this world.

Tejera's curveball is definitly sick that thing can bite the dust and make the hitter swing looking for it. But that only happends once a blue moon so I expect Rosenthal to do some major work with him over the winter into spring training.

Yes, when he is on.

It's a matter of consistancy.

When he isn't on, he hangs it right over the plate.

If Tejera can stay consistant, he will be an unexpected force in our bullpen.

Actually, I have always like Tejera. I thought he had the stuff to be a consistent starter, but I was wrong. He does have the stuff and the makeup though, just not the consistency. Dont know why. IF - and that is a big IF - he can be more consistent, sure, he could be a force in our bullpen. But that could be said about pretty much any player.
