Trade Deadline Suggestions

Featured Replies

Post your ideas about trades that you either want the Marlins to do or think could happen at the deadline. It would help to explain why it is a good fit for each side.

I'll start with Castro. While his numbers have been at career low levels, a lot due to bad luck, he has shown good numbers against lefties. With that in mind, the Indians, Phillies, and Rangers are all contenders in need of a second baseman to platoon against lefties.

The Indians make the most sense based on their prospects available. Kipnis has been terrible against lefties this year so getting a platoon partner makes sense. They also have had injuries to their rotation so they are probably looking for starting pitchers as well. We can leverage this to a better return.

My proposal:

Trade Richards, Castro and the rest he is owed this year in exchange for 2B/SS Tyler Freeman (mlb.com #86) and RHP Jean Carlos Mejia (Cleveland's #17). Freeman has a 60 hit tool and Mejia is underrated in my opinion with a plus fastball curveball, slider and good control. He has only been a starter for the past 2 seasons but has posted K/9 of over 9 and BB/9 of under 2.5 as a starter.

Castro to the Indians.

They could use an infielder and well, we need to get Diaz up to the bigs. Don't really care what they send back or if the Marlins have to pay most of his contract.

Kipnis has been terrible against lefties. Plus the Indians have been bad against lefties as a team so he could come off the bench late in ballgames against lefty relievers. Perfect fit for them in my opinion.

By far the most tradeable assets that the Marlins have that you don't see the team building around are the relievers. By baseball reference WAR totals, If you take out Conley and Chen, the Marlins are actually ahead of the Brewers, Nationals, Dodgers, Twins, Diamondbacks, Phillies, Braves, Red Sox, Cubs, and Astros. Most or all will be buyers at the deadline so the Marlins could have a good opportunity to pillage some farm systems.

Good job opening this thread about what we should do at the deadline. We were long overdue for a thread like that.

This is not a thread about what we should do at the trade deadline. We already have one of those. This is a thread about suggesting trades for the Marlins to consider. See the difference?

If you deem it irrelevant, why take the time to reply?

Since the Twins also need relievers I started thinking about snatching up Jordan Balazovic. Probably a pipe dream for some of these trades, but if the Marlins did all three they would add 3 top 100 prospects. Along with the draft, the international signings, and reevaluating the players having big seasons like Diaz and Cabrera, these moves would definitely put the Marlins in the top 10 farm rankings and could give the team 7+ top 100 prospects.

Just realized that I forgot to send this one. This was the second trade that was referenced in the post above:

I can see Will Smith from the Dodgers in exchange for a couple relievers and maybe a throw in from either side to complete the deal.

I’d call the reds and offer them Bryan Holaday for a couple of mid level prospects. An under the radar guy for them is Joel Kuhnel.

do they need a new Triple-A catcher?

Nobody wants Holaday. The Marlins barely tolerate him.  Deal, in order of value, Castro, Urena, Walker, Prado, Conley. If somehow possible, Granderson. Bring up, Diaz, Dean, Brinson and anybody else who may have a future with the team.

Might want to check the reds situation at the moment. Not to mention that they are all in.

I’m not proposing that we get a top 100 prospect for him, we are talking about a guy that doesn’t even crack their top 20. They just signed Ryan Lavarnway for god sakes

Wishful thinking on Conley. He has 0 value. He can’t even get lefties out and they are hitting .350 off him.
