Posted August 14, 20195 yr I mean, I kinda get what he's saying... at the time they thought it was the right move even if it wasn't. Thoughts?
August 14, 20195 yr I personally liked the signing at the time even if it was a big contract. The 4 years before with Baltimore he had: 2012 - 4.02 ERA, 192.2 IP 2013 - 4.07 ERA, 137.0 IP 2014 - 3.54 ERA, 185.2 IP 2015 - 3.34 ERA, 191.1 IP At the very least we'd be getting a guy that'd throw innings at a decent level to help solidify a shaky rotation. At best, a guy to slot in behind Jose who'd pitch well and throw a lot of innings. Another thing to consider - he was also in the AL coming to the NL, so usually numbers get better shifting to the NL. On paper it looked like a good signing that would help the team out.
August 14, 20195 yr I liked the deal when it was signed as well, even though we overpaid. It would be interesting to see the thread on this forum at the time of the signing, I am sure a lot of people thought it was a decent deal.
August 14, 20195 yr I was not opposed to the original deal. However, I am opposed to keeping him on the roster now.
August 14, 20195 yr Author I think people do forget that we had Jose leading a team that we thought had a chance at the postseason (and they did have a chance as they were still in the race in September)... so going after someone to be a number two behind our ace was not a bad plan. The problem of course was that Chen really did become a number two.
August 14, 20195 yr Sort of get it, but he was a 29 year old fly ball pitcher who had always had a home run problem. His fip was fine, but nothing exciting. I think looking back they shouldn't have gone that route. I think it's hard to be angry at that move, when it probably was of the smartest compared to other moves they had made.
August 14, 20195 yr Anyway, of course Samson does not regret the signing. He is not even involved with the team anymore so he does not have to live with it.
August 14, 20195 yr Samson is amazingly critical of new ownerships moves. It’s hysterical (in a bad way).
