February 8, 20215 yr YUSSS. I am all for this. Bring back the four run innings produced by singles and doubles and suddenly that one dude goes deep. I miss rally innings. This may actually have the added benefit (hopefully) of getting more balls in play cause batters may not attempt to hit homers every swing now.
February 8, 20215 yr Obviously there’s been an uptick in homers, but idk if it’s solely because of the ball. The launch angle movement has blown up in recent years which is probably leading to a league-wide increase in slugging. (That’s the Little known secret that turned Jose Batista from a AAAA player to a star so it definitely has an effect.) In response, pitchers have started to turn to the high fastball for strikeouts since that’s the one weakness of that “drop and drive” approach. Only trouble is in trying to pitch high, a lot of “missed” pitches are being left over the plate and getting crushed. With that said I know there’s been tests showing the ball got much “bouncier” and the stitches were reduced to create less drag after I believe the 2017 season or 2015 not sure. Either way, I don’t care if they play with croquet balls, I just want a full season of baseball!

Dr. Meredith Wills did a whole bunch of research on a bunch of baseballs starting in 2013 and, yeah, the baseballs starting in late 2015 through now have gotten progressively worse in terms of drag/size. More "round" baseballs lately decreasing the drag equals more distance. It's probably not going to be a ridiculous change. League-wide ERA won't suddenly drop by 2.5 runs like some are thinking. But homers have become much less exciting, really. Again, give me those long multi-hit innings.
