Dang. Didn't even know he was an available option.

I'm sure @Das Texan knew.

Reports seem to indicate the A's let him go because he was set to make $4M this year......if they're hurting that bad for money, maybe we can trade for some of their guys?

and if you are shocked hte A's say they have no money, well you havent been paying attention for the last 2 decades.

Who's shocked?  I'm just saying that's the report - even they have years where they are more concerned about money than others.  With a big arbitration class, it's not surprising this is a "worry" year.

Melvin is getting a 3 year deal worth 12M, so 4M/year.

The more surprising thing is they let him interview.

Its not shocking Melvin would leave once given a long term deal.

He was going into the last year of his deal.

Hopefully the A's can get shit figured out be it in that dump called Oakland or somewhere else and in the next year or two.

Here's the latest on that.

"The Alameda County board of supervisors voted (by a 4-1 margin) Tuesday to join the Athletics and the city of Oakland in the team’s attempts to construct a new ballpark at the Howard Terminal site in Oakland.  The county’s agreement is non-binding, and as Annie Sciacca of The Bay Area News Group explains, many steps remain before construction can or would actually begin on a new A’s stadium, or how financing for the development project would break down between the county, city, and the team.  Still, “I think our willingness to at least go further based on the motion gives the county the opportunity to do more due diligence around this,” supervisor Nate Miley said."

I'll believe this is being built when its constructed.

I agree.  Still expect them to wind up in Vegas.

I get that the A's are cheap but with Melvin's success this clearly says money is more important than winning to them. It's like they didn't even bother trying to keep him. I wonder if he was ever offered a lower pay deal like Mattingly took in Miami?

Almost sounds like the Padres offer was out of left field and the A's were like "ok, we can't match that, bye".

But they also didn't have to let him interview so it sounds like they were considering cutting him anyways. They were probably hoping he got the job. Oakland over here pushing their great manager out the door while the Marlins are keeping their past his expiration date manager.

It makes a fire sale for the A's a lot easier to do with Melvin gone, tbh.
