But Mondesi is a true Veteran with over a decade under his belt, It may be to late to turn this guy around, and I dont want to take the chance, especially when he puts up sub-par to par numbers

Vlad is our #1 choice but come one people Mondesi is better than no Mondesi. He could defiently help this team. And if he did become a cancer then big deal it would be a one year contract and we cut or trade him. The bottom line is the Marlins need to improve their team to repeat and Mondesi is better than nothing.

baseball was simpler when Jack Played...The whole Era that Jack played in was much simpler. Less problems aroused.

Maybe Mondesi doesn't need McKeon to turn him around. Beckett was a c*cky SOB in May, and he was even worse in October (and, consequently better). Still we won with Josh. McKeon's strategy seems to be let the kids play until they get out of control and that's when he gives them the old mistreat and ignore routine. I think the presence of Castillo, as solid team leader, will help whatever problem Mondesi might be. The only thing I worry about is if Mondesi thinks he's deserving of a primary role, but it's not like other players and McKeon haven't been through that situation before.

Mondesi would be a good acquisition. And no - one player will not destroy this team. He has no clout in this clubhouse - he is an outsider. In order for him to wreck the clubhouse he would have to be a part of it. He wouldnt get very far on this team if he was going to be destructive - and I gurantee you our FO and managing staff wont keep him around for it.

 

Maddux is too much money for what we need. And NO Das, you are not the only one who is uncomfortable speeding AJ back. I dont think he should pitch until after ASB - at least not with us. Give him some looks in ST, put him on rehab assignment - in the pen. Then bring him up in the pen, and give him a few starts in Aug/Sept - get ready for next season. But let's face it - the team knows AJ and his condition better than we do. I trust them...

 

But back to Maddux. Get me El Duque or Robert Person for a 5th starter. We dont need to break the bank (right on, Rferry).

 

Sig Vlad - if it cant be done, get Mondesi, Sauerbeck, and Person (at least my choice anyway, and if healthy).

IF the fans dont come out for this, then there is nothing more they can do. THey have to be fiscally responsible at this point and unless a stadium deal gets done very soon, I just dont see us getting a 'big-ticket' player.

I say only because a team that at that time had a top 5 payroll expects near sell-outs for every game, not coming consistently short. Frankly, Miami hasn't shown, and it probably never will show, the ability to support a baseball team for 81 regular season home games. The Marlins need to find a way to connect with the fans, and I really think that the best way to do this would be to bring in a guy like Vlad or Maddux, who gets the whole baseball world buzzing about what is brought to the World Series Champs. Pudge was a name, and he added appeal but I remember Dan LeBatard describing the signing as "breast enhancements on a corpse." Now that the Marlins are finally taken seriously, adding Vlad/Maddux/Kendall/Lo Duca etc, generates a buzz, remember, the biggest name we've brought in is Armando Benitez. We need to grab some headlines to gain some momentum with the casual fans...

I have a few friends that bought season tix for 2004 and they were not supporting this team consistently after 1998 debacle. They have a desire to support this team now, and they are emotionaly attached.

 

Let's remember the 2003 magical season. Fans can continue to ride that wave by looking at Josh Beckett, Penny, Pavano, Castillo, Lowell, Cabrera, Willis, etc etc.

The Only way Miami will support a team IMO is if that team wins games, no need for big names, If the team wins games the people will go.

I agree 100% -- well said. :homer I think it is a good point you make, but I have to disagree. For one, I think the 'sample size' is too small to really forecast fan interest. Back in the early years, the team was a novelty and everyone wanted to come out. Then, when that newness wore off (a strike in '94 killed a lot of interest), we had to overcome some difficulties (the strike) and went for it all in '97. H-Bomb nuked the team, like a spoiled child who didnt get his way, and the franchise never recovered - until this last season.

 

The Marlins didnt have to win the World Series to generate fan interest - just be in the thick of it, like at the end with Philadelphia. This franchise will win with its current roster, and bringing in a name to sell this franchise is not necessary. For one, Maddux would be a one year deal, and how could fans attach themselves to that? Look at how quickly we have recovered from Fudge! Vlad would be a great opportunity to stamp this team, but he is not going to be a media darling for this franchise - maybe appeal more to the Latin community, but even that is debatealbe.

 

The Marlins have signed players in the past to generate fan interest, and it has NEVER worked. Winning works. Perhaps, signing a marquee name with a winning franchise in place would help, but we really cant afford to do so without a stadium deal in place. If we can just improve this team, we will sell at first because of the WS ring, but after a while, when as the team keeps winning, the core of fans will rise and stay steady. This franchise just needs consistency, that is all.

 

(it is too bad that the Marlins have targeted BEFORE this season to get a stadium deal done though).
