January 7, 200422 yr I wouldn't mind Maddux, if only because while he's still solid, he'd also be a second pitching coach. I'd love to see Brad Penny get to pick his brain for a season. Like the article said, he could probably win 15, but his value would go far beyond HIS numbers.
January 7, 200422 yr Author I agree. Maddux could win 15 behind our solid defense and be a mentor to our young staff. I also like Orlando Hernandez who put up solid numbers 2 years ago. Remember, Loria tried to sign Clemens last year before Pudge. Loria loves big name guys. Vlad obviously is our 1st option. Say we do sign Maddux and Burnett comes back healthy a month into the season, who goes to the pen? I would say Pavano. Talk about a scary rotation......Beckett, Maddux, Burnett, Penny, and Willis. With Pavano there incase Burnett doesn't come back healthy or Willis struggles. I like it. GO MARLINS!

And he would be another pitching coach - but I dont think it is necessary. I want to see Willis continue to develop and Pavs continue to put in innings. We are losing 190 IP with the departure of Redman - and AJ WILL not be ready to pitch that much. At least not effectively and you dont want to push him. That said, Maddux is a lot of money to spend on a 'spot starter' or 4-5th starter. He would be good insurance for a struggling Willis or an injury, but I think we can find a cheaper alternative in Orlando Hernandez or even (my pick) Robert Person (if healthy). I think Maddux would be a move if we cant get Vlad. But I would rather us keep the extra money and re-invest it in our team. Right now, I like Sauerbeck. That would be a solid move and our bullpen would be quite strong - Benitez, Neu, Fox, Sauerbeck. Also have to figure Tejera in there, Phelps, maybe Alamanza (still a flame throwing lefty, if he EVER gets his shizzle together). Got to like the way our staff is shaping up.

Look at what they did with Chris Hammond. As for Maddux, he would be the #2 starter if we signed him, which is a good thing because none of the other healthy guys we have right now are legit top of the rotation guys. I'd love to throw Maddux in there between Beckett and Penny (or Pavano). Plus, and this is the major plus in my opinion, if we've got Maddux, why do we even need to start Burnett this year? Let him come out of the pen in 2004 and go back to starting in 2005 (like the Cards did with Matt Morris). Willis, Pavano, Penny would all still get their innings in, it's not like this would hurt them. I think it would help all three (and Beckett even) to have someone like Maddux around them. They've never had that kind of guy to learn from.
January 7, 200422 yr Saurbeck sounds like a good idea. and you all know how i feel about Vlad "The Final Answer" Guerrero :thumbup the kendal idea proves that the team isnt sure about Ramon being innocent but he does fit our team model (speed and contact) whatever the team does will be great.
January 7, 200422 yr another big plus to maddux is that we dont need to sign him to a big long term deal like some other big name players, after the way CJ thrived those last few years in a marlins uni, im probobly over cautious about locking away or teams money for years to come

January 7, 200422 yr I wouldn't mind Kendall batting third for $5 mil a year (roughly half his current contract price) sandwiched between Pierre/Castillo and Lowell/Cabs REGARDLESS of Castro's guilt or innocence. Defensively he's no whiz and opposing teams will be stealing on him with abandon which doesn't please me but a guy like Pudge only comes by once in a lifetime. It's kind of a tossup. I'm not an enormous fan of Castro but I would like to see what he can do, finally. The downside risk with Castro is greater than with Kendall, but the Ramon's potential upside could make him a very valuable part of the team. Whatever Admin/McKeon et al decide works for me.
January 7, 200422 yr I would love to get Greg Maddux but we dont need a good pitcher like him because our rotation is already set. We are missing a starter since AJ is out but Greg Maddux wont be good fill that spot because what happens when Burnett comes back? i would rather go after Kendall, he can hit in the 3rd spot and has great contact and good speed for a catcher. Plus we need a catcher, not 2 in-experience catchers in their 1st or 2nd full season starting. I hope we can go after Saurbeck, he is one of the best lefty specialist in the game right now.
January 7, 200422 yr Vlad, Maddux or Sauerbeck I'd LOVE to get. Kendall, I'm not so sure. I think it will be hard to trade Castro, what with his legal situation, and he's already said he doesn't want to come back to Florida as a backup. Should be interesting.

I'm not sold on Kendall either and I was surprised to see Maddux's name pop up. I assumed he was San Deigo bound as well. Realizing you can never have enough quality starting pitching because every team is a muscle tear away from oblivion if that's the route the FO wants to go you won't hear me objecting. Sauerbeck? Wouldn't be my favorite acquisition but since it's going to be difficult to trade for relief help, if he's the best FA out there, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
