May 13May 13 Author I'm sure they saw the raw power and figured they had something if they could cut down on the strikeouts. Same thing trading for De Los Santos. Similar to Norby as well. They scout guys with outstanding tools with holes in their games and hope they can fix the weaknesses and they will have something. It is high risk, high reward. When it works out it turns into a Liam Hicks or Stowers. When it doesn't work out you get a Wagaman.They do the same thing with speed: Esteury Ruiz, Emaarion Boyd, Marsee, etc. These guys have an elite tool but are available because they have a flaw in their game. Polish the flaw and you have a diamond. Unfortunately, it is not always that simple (e.g. P.J. Morlando)Most of the guys we pick up or trade for or even draft have outlier tools. That is the modus operandi. Personally, I'd prefer a little more emphasis on defense, fundamentals, and high game IQ. Right now the result is poor fundamental baseball which is costing us but that is sometimes the price when you have a young and learning on the job roster at times.
