division

Featured Replies

i dont know if anybody has noticed but its not like if the division is wide opened like someone said. mets-mike cameron and kaz matsui

expos might be the only team who got worse but carl everett and nick johnson

phillies-loaded bullpen but always chocke, braves still have both jones brothers, furcal

the braves have yet to fully replace maddux, sheffield, lopez and castilla from last year's team.

drew could help, but he has never been healthy for an entire year yet.

the braves have A LOT of work to do to be in the same category as the phillies and marlins. I know they won't die, but I think their demise is right around the corner.

Which team is better out of the Phillies or Marlins might be hard to say, give it a month to see how things shape up further to fully analyze those two teams, but they are the cream of the division easily.

All the teams in the NL East have the talent to win a championship...but like last season it comes down to who can beat the teams in their own division.

The Braves can't beat the Marlins. The Mets can't beat the Marlins. The Expos can't beat the Marlins. The Phillies had a hard time in 2003, but in past years they did beat the Marlins. The thing is this Phillies team isn't as good as those in past years.

dont they pretty much have the same thing as last year but with wagner and worrell(i think)?

no way in hell Burell matches last years numbers......

and i think like 15-20 losses was cuz there pen couldnt finish games..... this year they addressed that problem.....

not to mention there entire rotation is all star caliber as ours is not.....

as of right now there the team to beat with us in 2nd place in my opnion..... but i believ there done 4 the off season as we are not.....

anything and everything could chance in the matter of 4 weeks.....

so as of right now, Jan 11th the Phillies are better...... but on Feb 11th we might be better.,.....

like my boy said well find out in a month

The thing is this Phillies team isn't as good as those in past years.

Dude, into 2001 their ace was Omar Daal, Their firstbasemen was Travis Lee, Second Marlon Anderson, Doug Glanville was in Center and Pat Burrell was in his first year.

I have a hard time believing their not better.

The addition of Milton solves their problem of a fifth stater which hurt them early on last year as Bretty Myers moves to the fifth and Cormier, Worrell, and Wager looks pretty good to me.

2003 Philadelphia Phillies National League 86 76 .531 15.0 2,259,948

2001 Philadelphia Phillies National League 86 76 .531 2.0 1,782,054

Add Worrell, Wagner the biggest reason for those 86 wins subtract Mesa and Williams

Add the fact that they now have one of the best 5th starters(myers due to the addition of Milton) you can have plus the fact that he is going to be better than last year.

Then take in the fact that Marlon Byrd in all likely hood will continue to advance plus if David Bell is healthy he will produce with Chase Utley waiting.

I can really see how this team is worse than 2001 :lol

Rune, the 2001 Phillies beat up on the division until late. The 2003 Phillies died in the division as the Marlins and Braves put them in the ground with the Roses.

If the 2004 model can beat up on the division, then they shall win. If not, back to early offseasons you go.

If Milton isn't their 5th starter I'm not scared.

All the teams have improved dramitcally in the NL east except for the Expos and the braves went down losing Maddux, and sheffield. If we solify our Pen we will greatly compete again with the phillies.

maybe i missed a news flash or something but....

we did NOT drastically improve this year.

well it all depends on our pitching. if beckett continues the way he did in the WS and penny improves and burnett comes back healthy and pitching pretty good, we can really compete.

we did NOT drastically improve this year. We didn't get worse, either, IMO.

Offensive production MAY go slightily down, that's it. The bullpen and rotation are both better than they were opening day 2003.

if beckett continues the way he did in the WS and penny improves

Penny was arguably better than Beckett in the World Series. Let's hope they BOTH continue doing what they did in the series.

I think Penny'll go fron his 14 wins this year to about 16, but Beckett should win over 15 as well if he stays healthy...

Bullpen is improved from opening day, but not as good as it was at the end of the season. I don't know why everyone is saying we're going to have a sharp decline in production, it's not like we were the Red Sox where everyone on our team had a career year offensively. And a full year of Cabrera and Conine should account for what we lost with Encarnacion and Lee. Castro's offensive production should be somewhat similar to Pudge during the regular season, and Choi'll help a bit. Besides, Castillo and Pierre are back, and they were, in my opinion, our most important offensive assets during the regular season.

I think we are improved in the pen with Benitez. Yes, I have begun to come around on this guy - I think he could get anywhere from 35-45 saves should we need him to. I wouldnt be surprised if he got in the 50's if he had the opportunity - his ERA will be solid too, around 3.00.

Everyone looks at paper teams in January, but then reality sinks in.

Philly has one major thing against it...it's fans. While many cities have that as a benefit, Philly players don't really like Philly fans. Billy Wagner blows a save or two and we shall see how much he misses Houston and it's laid back fans.

Yeah just like Jim Thome was going to want out of Philly as soon as he struck out and how Millwood was never coming back because of the fans.
