January 20, 200422 yr i would say ramon castro or fudge if we get him in a trade or after may 1st. how about that juan pierre guy hmmmmmmmmm!!!! :w00t
January 20, 200422 yr Could this possibly be the worst poll entered on Marlinbaseball.com in recent memory? Even that popcorn poll made more sense than this one. Haha JP. That sure is funny. And why did you make up those silly stats? You asked us to answer the question not to see what your genius ideas are. Oh . . . I'd like to see Ray Castro start for a month or two. If he can't start at catcher in the Big Leagues we'll need to make a trade but we have to try Castro. JP is a really good catcher though . . . ha ha funny!
January 20, 200422 yr Considering Castro can barely hit his weight in PR, I'd have to agree it may the worst poll in a l-o-n-g while.
January 20, 200422 yr Considering Castro can barely hit his weight in PR :w00t he has had more court appearances than home runs in recent memory
January 20, 200422 yr redmond is the catcher, have a nice day...brewhahahaha cmon nature boy ray deserves the starting job after paying his dues on the bench
January 20, 200422 yr redmond is the catcher, have a nice day...brewhahahaha cmon nature boy ray deserves the starting job after paying his dues on the bench Ray "deserves" the job? What Castro deserves is a chance to compete for the job and nothing more.
January 20, 200422 yr redmond is the catcher, have a nice day...brewhahahaha cmon nature boy ray deserves the starting job after paying his dues on the bench I think Mike Redmond also had a lot of time on the bench last year, if I remember things correctly. Mike deserves the starting job, but hopefully they will give him a chance to try out for it in Spring Training. I'd take a more consistent hitter with a better average with someone who has "bursts" of power any day.

January 21, 200422 yr As much as I like Redmond, I really don't think he's got the stamina to catch day after day and put up numbers like Castro. Besides, Castro deserves a shot. He's been the bridesmaid for years now. I guess we should have sat Ted Williams down for Carroll Hardy or Gene Stephens too. The only thing Castro deserves is a shot at making the team, nothing more, nothing less than anyone else on the team. He has zero entitlement. His chances are the same as Mike Redmond's or anyone else who shows up for spring training. And if he doesn't perform he can ride the bench for another season or be cut.

I say even if Redmond outperforms Castro in spring training you give Castro the job...if after a few months he his under .200 then you switch it around. But believe me, this is Castro's job.
January 21, 200422 yr Sham, I'm not saying it isn't his job to lose, because it is. I just don't agree he "deserves" the job for riding the bench for the last couple of years.
January 21, 200422 yr I think it will hinge on Castro in spring training also, but they'll probably start the season splitting time. If Castro starts to shine with the increased at-bats, then he'll probably get the majority of starts, about 70% I'll guess. Either way I can't see Redmond playing more than half the time. He's not an every day catcher, he's said so himself. He gets worn down.

I forget which Manager said it (Boles, I think), that Red plays with so much energy and enthusiasm he didn't dare play him more often! He's a gamer, not afraid to punish himself. Result is he's a perfect part-timer.
