Dietrich is pure garbage defensively. Yeah, Dietrich can hit, but does he hit enough to justify keeping his errors and defensive lapses in the line up? We'll see. He tore it up in the minors hitting, but hasn't done much here since he's been back.

Red wants to lose, it's good for his job security ya know. There's been several games where I wondered if Red was trying to lose. Like when he brought in Marmol. Twice. Red doesn't have to worry about his job. His salary is very low, just the way Loria like it, and unless he loses 100 games again, he will be back. LOGICALLY, yes. At the time, he pitched very well, almost ace-like and definitely good enough to be the #2 guy that would step up or at least stay consistent with what he was doing. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened. Alvarez has picked it up a bit and carried a lot of the load as of late, so I give him credit for that. Now get off your pedestal, be careful when you step down to not break your hip, and relaaaax. Sure thing, kid. But thanks for making my point for me; maybe you can explain it to Eric. One thing we found out for sure was that Eovaldi could not step up and lead the pitching staff when Jose got hurt. Just like Anibal Sanchez couldn't do it back when JJ got hurt in '11. And it does not look like Heaney's going to be our savior either.

Sure, he's only pitched 9 innings so far. But I have seen enough of Heaney so far to understand a few things: 1) He probably ain't the guy who is gonna come in and turn this team's fortunes around this year. 2) He has nice stuff, 93 mph fastball, nice slider, but he damn sure ain't Ron Guidry (I can tell many of you are very young, so you should Google him). Heaney seems to be a finesse pitcher, a guy with nice enough stuff, but not a guy who will blow anybody away. That's not to say he won't be good; he probably will be. I damn sure hope he will be, cause I'm a Marlins fan. After he settles down, gets over the early inning jitters, and learns the hitters in this league, he can be a fine starter. In my opinion, a Number 3 type starter, or possibly a Number 2. He doesn't have the look of a potential 20 game winner, but looks like a decent arm that can win maybe 12-15 games on a team that can hit. 3) Of course I can be completely wrong about the kid. Or I could be completely right. What freakin difference does it make? None of us are baseball geniuses or we'd be getting paid for our opinions, not giving them away for free. Of course we all believe we know more than the next guy, that's natural. But it's not worth calling each other names on the internet over it. Like I said, if we were sitting in the neighborhood bar watching the game, you wouldn't be running your mouths. So why do it here? We know his stuff, we know what he's accomplished in the minors, and we understand where his likely ceiling/floor is. Ah, so I have stumbled on to a board of pitching EXPERTS. My bad. And this team misses Yelich big time, especially Stanton. Seems like every time Stanton gets a hit these days there's no one on base. Jake Marisnick is so far doing a good imitation of Marisnick 2013.

I'm still shaking my head thinking about the guy over here who said that Heaney is going to be better than Henderson Alvarez when he gets here because he has "better stuff and better command". If the team is over .500 and within a few games of a playoff spot, they damn well should be buyers. Any time a team has a shot at making the playoffs and doesn't take it, I get sick to my stomach. In 2008 and 2009 the Fish had a shot both years and Loria did basically nothing. He didn't sell, because how could he justify it while his team was in contention? But he didn't make a serious attempt to buy either, adding a nobody like Nick Johnson in 2009. The Fish finished in 2nd place in the East that year and were like 12 games over .500. Had they really tried to make some buys that year, they had a chance to make the playoffs. That's what teams are supposed to do. If they have a shot at winning this year, they need to take it. It's not about next year, not unless you're already several games under .500 and out of it. I can't believe any Marlins fan saying they should be sellers if the team is playing over .500 baseball and is in contention. Maybe the guy who said "Sometimes I think people here actually enjoy the Marlins selling at the deadline and saying they will wait for the future" is right.

A gutty performance by Nathan. Clutch hitting by McGehee. Nice work by the pen. And really fine defense by the Fish, all night long. Well, it was fun doing this with you all.
