Peter Bendix Named Pres. Of Baseball Ops
i like this move, it makes sense now what they had in plan, but when kim ng made the statement to the press about why she left we never heard the other side, so it looked bad. if this was the plan. im for it. bring in some players and philosphy to focus on the fundamentals and winning on the cheap if we are to be a cheap team. kim had a habit of overpaying streaky and/or washed players a bit cheaper than a no risk option, and if they had a good year it would be worth it, but they often have a bad year so it wasnt worth it and bruce said no more. we are winning cheap and not hoping to win with streaky /washed players. At least we have a identity now on our goal, winning cheap with the fundamentals.

New GM News, Thoughts & Rumors
I like the hire if it's the rays gm. but it certainly does look like bruce wants to be cheaper in the future @TaiwanMarlins. the question now is what will they do with skip and what does skip want to do? is he a lame duck as kim wouldve been?

Josh Bell Exercises Player Option, Will Remain With Marlins
Unless they are in the playoff hunt they will probably trade Bell anyways at the deadline. So whatever plan they have for 1st base and DH will be fluid as the year unfolds. Unrelated but personally I loved Lewin because he was an amazing 1st baseman, I know he hit like shit, but a year with Brant Brown and I think he couldve been somewhat respectable. He showed flashes of power at times. Was really raw but I just think because of his defense I would've been more patient with his lack of hitting, as opposed to dumping him. 1st baseman who are ok hitters are given more chances even if they are horrible fielders, so I think a 1st baseman like Lewin who was an elite fielder warranted some time with a good hitting coach like Brant Brown before giving up on him.

Josh Bell Exercises Player Option, Will Remain With Marlins
His pace with Brant Brown was higher than on Cleveland. 33 homer pace for the 50+games. He ended up hitting 22 total, so with a full season with Brant Brown I dont think 25-30 is unreasonable. It's also a contract year, maybe his last contract coming, so he will be motivated.

Josh Bell Exercises Player Option, Will Remain With Marlins
.270 and 25-30 homers for a full year pace with the new hitting coach brant brown. he'll be the veteran leader. I know Arraez doesn't like DHing. And I don't think Arraez did anything particular to lose his spot at 2nd if that's his preferred spot over 1st base. Prefer to keep Bell at 1st. Either way our defense will be pretty bad again, maybe Edwards can play in the outfield (left maybe) if Arraez wants to stay at 2nd? So 1st-bell, 2nd-arraez, shortstop-whoever (maybe Dane?), 3rd-burger, LF-edwards, CF-jazz, RF-whoever (DLC? Sanchez? another?)

2023/24 Off-Season
what about de la cruz and sanchez? are they expected to continue 'earning' a spot. I dont think DLC will get the oppurtunity he had this year, and he didnt impress too consistently, except for staying healthy. i believed in him but too often his overswinging and trying to mash a homer got him in bad pitch counts and tho he was a good hitter with 2 strikes, he wasted the 1st 2 strikes trying to unleash fury on a homerun usually resulting in swing and miss or fouling a perfect pitch over the middle. if he tried to hit more singles and take the homers as they come i wouldnt be opposed to having him as the regular starter, but his poor defense and bad hitting habits i think make it hard. i wouldnt go with the bellinger route tho unless they traded DLC and Sanchez for some other infielders or pitchers and then signed Bellinger.

Soler Opts Out (Is Also a Silver Slugger Finalist)
Its more than just spending, but I understand your point. There was many teams that spend a ton and dont even make the playoffs. And many teams that dont spend a ton and did make the playoffs. But its true, better free agents cost more money obviously. But if you throw money just for the sake of spending, you will land a team that is soulless and has no identity or plan.

Soler Opts Out (Is Also a Silver Slugger Finalist)
DH dont have to run on bases??? I thought they only didnt field I didnt know they also dont run on the bases. And yes the DH does have effect on defense because the worst fielder is the DH. If you lose your DH, that means your next worse fielder becomes the DH. Unless the player who replaces Soler on the roster has worse defense than the next worse fielder who will become DH, then YES, crazy as it might sound your defense improves. Even tho as u say, DH has no effect on fielding. It does indirectly. And obviously DH still runs on bases....

he was one of my fave players this year, i dont see why we wouldnt bring him back as a 4th outfielder/defense replacement.

Soler Opts Out (Is Also a Silver Slugger Finalist)
he'll hit like .200 with 20 homers next year and then get injured the next year. i wouldnt sign a guy like bellinger, these guys have huge years in their contract year and then go back to sucking. idk what it is, maybe motivation, maybe PED usage in contract years, maybe he got covid in the brain that took a couple years to improve, focus, whatever it is i wouldnt sign these guys who have a good year after a string of bad years. it never works. they always say in their slump during the games 'the back of the baseball card says they will turn it around', it never does.

Soler Opts Out (Is Also a Silver Slugger Finalist)
On the bright side our team speed, baserunning, and defense improved, and that was what we needed to improve. Yea he was DH but now we can use DH on our next poor fielder and we have lots more of them to choose from.

Is there an update on Jonathan Davis and if he will be back next year?

Kim Ng Not Returning
I find it interesting how every flaw Kim had gets magnified 10000x and with other GMs its always 'its the owners fault'.

Kim Ng Not Returning
Larry Beinfest our beloved championship GM traded Miggy maybe wouldve been the 1st Marlins in the Hall of Fame for a bunch of shitty prospects, only Andrew Miller was worth anything and that was some 10 years after he left the Marlins. There was no backlash for this 'scouting' issue then. He got Urbina for Adrian Gonzalez. I think if Kim made those trades people would have the pitchforks burning her at the stake. I don't think they will find a better GM. Every GM has flaws, every team has flaws, every player has flaws. If every successful person was let go or low balled because of their flaws, then we would have no team. As Skip said in the last press conference, he is a work in progress. Skip is still improving, and Kim Ng as team operations and GM was still improving. I do understand baseball is a business but in business there is also relationships, trust, and chemistry and I think we had that at the highest degree with Skip and Kim. Of course they can both improve, but why is it ok to just let anyone go cuz of their flaws. Yes our drafts suck but our scouting has been good. I dont think u can say scouting whiffed on Eury. Cabrera as well. I dont think u can say we whiffed on scouting Luzardo who was ditched by the As. The Marlins SCOUTING saw something in him and it WORKED. So to say the scouting has been abysmal isn't the whole story.

Kim Ng Not Returning
yep, berti playing the majority of the year and only having like 10 or 15 steals is inexcusable, hes in like the top 95+%ile in speed. i think that was more a skip philosophy, tho u might be right, maybe it is kim. remember kim came from the yankees and dodgers - both who solve their issues with more resources spent on homerun hitters and less on fundamentals. either way it was very frustrating watching every game and they need 3 or 4 hits in an inning to score a single run unless they get a homerun. if we are to be a small market team, we have to do the baserunning and defense and fundamentals at a high level to have success, otherwise they will always be doing the yankee/dodger thing of hoarding more homerun hitters to try and solve the issues of the team and bruce doesnt want that cuz that gets expensive real fast.

only time will tell how this turns out. maybe it will be better or worse. our baserunning cant be much worse. who knows maybe the use the extra money on a better homerun costume.

DJ Svihlik Not Returning (Either)
Bruce certainly rather pay 22-25 year old prospects $700k to hit .250 in majors than pay 30-34 year olds $15-$20 million to hit .250. In the 2000s and late 90s we were known as a 'farm team', finding the best young players and then trading them away when they got expensive. Now we are the opposite. With this style of operations currently, I can see why Bruce wouldn't be the happiest rich man in the world since they would always be needing to trade for expensive players to improve. He rather would get the All Star years of young talented players when they are playing for peanuts.

Kim Ng Not Returning
To know Sherman had this in mind I dont know how he could celebrate with Kim and Skip in Pittsburgh when they clinched. I dont know how can join the party that night, then stab them in the back. I watched every game this year either live or on bally app replay and I dont imagine watching nearly as much next year. I was excited about this year but I have not much feelings anymore for the team. I feel whenever something good begins to happen here the rich greedy fucks will just fuck it up so they can buy some new mansions and yachts. I remember everyone hating Loria when he was here and would do anything to get a new owner but now everyone will realize it will only get worse.

red sox have a president of baseball operations as well? if so it would be the same job she wouldve had here right? seems she wants to be promoted from GM not be GM elsewhere. red sox have 'executive vice president of baseball operations' (brian o'halloran)

I thought some of those Stanton/Yelich/Jose years also would have made a playoff appearance with today's rules but still no. 2016 had a collapse in August of that year, they finished 4rth in wildcard behind 1) Mets (87-75) 2. Giants (87-75) 3. Cards (86-76) 4. Marlins (79-82) 2017 was the Giancarlo and rest of the offense explosion but there pitching was horrible, they were 5th in wild card that year at 77-85

If using today's playoffs rules of 3 wild cards, the following Marlins years would have made the playoffs in those 20 years they didnt make the playoffs 2005 - as 3rd wild card (83-79) 2009 - as 3rd wild card (87-75) less than i wouldve thought tbh but 2 other times, once with Larry Beinfest as GM (2005) and once with Michael Hill as GM (2009)

Kim Ng Not Returning
I understand the sentiment about the whole '1st time the Marlins made the playoffs in a full season in 20 years' but that claim is misleading as the new playoff rules with 3 wild cards did not exist until recently. if u want to make the distinction of 'full year' vs the 2020 year, then u should also make the distinction between new playoff rules and the old rules where only 4 teams in each league made the playoffs. before it was only 1 wild card for many many years, and if those rules applied now, this years marlins team wouldnt have made the playoffs either. there were several times in those 20 years that would have made the playoffs if todays rules applied. so that claim is misleading. i am a fan of kim ng but i think when people make that claim it is misleading since the 3 wild card expanded playoff didnt exist all those years.
