Wood undergoes surgery
Cubs right-hander Kerry Wood underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to clean out his right shoulder, putting an end to a season riddled by injuries. The hour-long operation included reinforcement of the labrum, as well as a debridement of the rotator cuff and bursa. The procedure was performed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek at Beacon Orthopedics in Sharonville, Ohio. ??I spoke with Dr. Kremchek and this was what he was hoping to find when he got in there,'' Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said before Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. ??This is exactly what he was looking for. We're very pleased with that.'' Wood is expected to begin a four-month rehabilitation program next week to regain motion and strength. The Cubs hope he'll recover in time to start the 2006 season. O'Neal emphasized Wood must first regain complete range of motion and strength in the shoulder before throwing again. ??You don't start any throwing program until you do that,'' O'Neal said. ??We're very confident Woody will be able to do that without any hiccups just because of the shape he was in going into surgery.'' Wood, the Cubs' ace through most of his career, made only 10 starts this season because of shoulder problems. He was on the DL from May 30 to June 29 with a strain, and then from July 25 to Aug. 5 with inflammation. After his second stint on the DL, he returned as a reliever. He made his first major league relief appearance on Aug. 5 in New York. In 11 relief appearances, Wood pitched 12 innings and was 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 17 strikeouts. In his final outing Monday, he pitched one scoreless inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 10 starts this season, Wood was 3-3 with a 4.67 ERA. Manager Dusty Baker hopes Wood will be able to rejoin the Cubs' rotation next season. ??You hate to say wait-and-see, but that's how it is,'' Baker said. ??We're counting on him big time. At this point, I can't say in which capacity. We're hoping as a starter. If not, we'll do the next-best thing for him and us.'' Source: AP

Matt and Lita together again
Speaking Matt Hardy, Kurt sent word that he and Lita, shock of shocks, were spotted at the Bahama Breeze on International Drive in Orlando on 8/28, after the house show in town, eating together. For what it's worth, I have heard similar of reports of the two being together recently as well. Work? Shoot? Only they know for sure, but wrestling certainly is one screwy business. Dolphins' Roster Moves
The Miami Dolphins' list of cuts Tuesday included a quarterback, a running back and two receivers, but it was the release of long-snapper Ed Perry that came as the biggest surprise. Perry had been with the Dolphins as long as anybody except linebacker Zach Thomas, and had signed a new five-year contract in the offseason. His place on the roster appeared safe, but his contract was terminated as coach Nick Saban instead chose to go with undrafted rookie free agent John Denney. ??Ed Perry has done a good job for this organization for a long, long time,'' Saban said. ??I have a lot of respect for him as a player and as a person. But from a business standpoint, it always makes sense to go with the younger guy.'' The release of Perry came as a surprise to his teammates. ??Nobody is ever a lock,'' said tight end Randy McMichael. ??Pretty much everybody in Miami thought Ed Perry was a lock to be the long-snapper.'' Along with Perry, cornerback Ray Green also had his contract terminated. The Dolphins also waived quarterback Brock Berlin, wide receivers Josh Davis and Danny Farmer, running back Kay-Jay Harris, linebacker Corey Jenkins, cornerback Billy Parker, defensive end Chris Solomona and offensive tackle Orrin Thompson. Also Tuesday, the Dolphins placed wide receiver Kendall Newson on injured reserve, cornerback Shirdonya Mitchell on the reserve non-football injury list, and cornerback Will Poole and defensive tackle Admin Chester on the physically unable to perform. Mitchell, Poole and Chester will be eligible to begin practicing with the team Oct. 17 while Newson is out for the season. Miami closes its preseason schedule Thursday night at home against Atlanta, but Saban said Tuesday he had not decided whether Gus Frerotte or A.J. Feeley would start at quarterback. The roster moves put the Dolphins at 75 players, including 10 players with NFL Europe roster exemptions. Source: AP

Bengals release Peter Warrick
Peter Warrick was released Tuesday by the Cincinnati Bengals, who have depth at receiver and had run out of patience with the former No. 1 draft pick. The move came a day after the hobbled receiver asked to be released if the Bengals had written him out of their plans. The fourth overall pick in the 2000 draft, Warrick arrived in Cincinnati looking to transfer his magic from national champion Florida State to the bumbling Bengals. They have yet to make the playoffs in his five seasons, and Warrick has had only one notable season. He caught 79 passes for 819 yards in 2003, carried 18 times for 157 yards, scored eight touchdowns and started looking like the shifty playmaker the Bengals thought they were drafting. A small crack in a bone by the knee limited him to one start last season, four games and 11 catches, his most exasperating year in Cincinnati. He missed the minicamps and the start of training camp while the leg healed. He played in only one preseason game, carrying once on a reverse ? he gained 2 yards before slipping ? and failing to catch a pass. Then he sat out practices last week because of a tender hamstring. Warrick was entering the final year of his contract and would have made $2.28 million. He's now free to sign with any team. The Bengals also waived third-year cornerback Terrell Roberts of Oregon State and guard Kyle Takavitz of Cincinnati. Source: AP

Natiaonals Sale Coming Soon
Major League Baseball hopes to select a new owner for the Washington Nationals by Labor Day and transfer control of the team by Oct. 1. Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer, said the sport wants a lease for the team's new ballpark signed before the selection of an owner is announced. Eight groups have bid for the franchise, which was purchased by the other 29 teams before the 2002 season and was the Montreal Expos before moving to the U.S. capital last winter. ??We've continued to meet and talk, probably on a daily basis, with the commissioner and with members of the committee,'' DuPuy said Tuesday following a marketing news conference. ??Several of the candidates have come in over the last couple of weeks and have gone down to mlb.com and have spent some time down there continuing their due diligence. Again, I see no reason why we can't make an announcement by Labor Day.'' Baseball bought the Expos for $120 million, and the sale price has been estimated at $300 million to $450 million. ??No candidates have been eliminated,'' DuPuy said. ??We continue to talk all of the candidates. We know basically what the candidates are willing to pay for the team, and I think it's a matter of making a decision, that's all. ... I don't think they will be eliminated one by one. I think we'll reach a consensus as to who will own the team.'' DuPuy said baseball already has done its investigation of the bidders and he anticipated a speedy approval of the winner. He wants new ownership in place before the start of the offseason so it can make decisions that will affect the 2006 roster and marketing plans. ??You don't want them to be handicapped,'' he said. ??We want them to run this team next year.'' In their first season in Washington, the Nationals began Tuesday just 1? games behind Houston, the NL wild-card leader. ??As long as it's done in the next three weeks, even month, you'll be fine,'' Nationals general manager Jim Bowden said. ??If it were to drag on, and now you lose this offseason, then it would be an issue. But baseball's aware of that. They're not going to let that happen.'' Teams can start signing free agents on the 16th day following the end of the World Series. Bowden said there also are staffing issues. ??It affects your plans because, No. 1, you're not going to hire good people away from good organizations if they don't know who the GM is. And they're not going to commit long-term until they know the owner, the president, the GM and those type of issues. But I think that Major League Baseball is well aware of that issue.'' The Nationals are playing at RFK Stadium, home of the former Washington Senators, until a new ballpark is built. ??The lease has not yet been signed, and we want the lease signed before we announce,'' DuPuy said. ??Jerry Reinsdorf and our lawyers and others have been working, again daily, on the lease to get the lease done,'' he added, referring to the Chicago White Sox owner. Former Atlanta Braves president Stan Kasten and former Seattle Mariners owner Jeffrey Smulyan are believed to be among the bidders. Other groups are thought to include businessman William Collins and Albert Lord, chairman of Sallie Mae; the Washington Baseball Club, led by former Texas Rangers partner Fred Malek and Jeffrey Zients; former Washington Capitals part-owner Jonathan Ledecky; Maryland real estate businessman Theodore Lerner; Tennessee developer Franklin Haney; and Yusef Jackson (the son of Rev. Jesse Jackson) and Ronald Burkle. Malek's group includes former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Vernon Jordan, a confidant of President Clinton's; the Collins-Lord group has Peter Fitzgerald, a former Republican senator from Illinois; and Ledecky's group includes financier George Soros, who spent millions trying to defeat President Bush in 2004. MLB to pick All-Time Latin Team
Six years after Latin American players were shut out from baseball's All-Century Team, the sport launched a promotion Tuesday to select a ??Latino Legends Team.'' Acknowledging the increased influence of its Spanish-speaking players and audience, baseball will conduct fan balloting from Aug. 29 through Oct. 10 and announce the winners before Game 4 of the World Series. In the 1999 voting for the All-Century team, the closest a Latin player got to one of the 30 spots was Roberto Clemente, who finished 10th behind Pete Rose in balloting for the nine outfield members. ??There are those who felt the Latin player-base community had been overlooked by fans in that election,'' said Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer. Hall of Famer Juan Marichal and New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera attended the news conference, but commissioner Bud Selig was absent. ??In my day, it was very, very hard for a Latino player to make it to the major leagues and establish himself at that level,'' Marichal said. A record 29.2 percent of players on opening day major league rosters were born outside the 50 states, with 91 players from the Dominican Republic, 46 from Venezuela, 34 from Puerto Rico and 18 from Mexico. ??Times are changing,'' Rivera said. ??I can't conceive what Juan Marichal and all those guys went through before. Today you have so many Latin players, so many Latino superstars, they take care of the kids when they come up to the big leagues. It's different now. It's totally different.'' Latin America's influence on baseball will be spotlighted next month by ??Viva Baseball,'' a documentary to air Sept. 23 on Spike TV. ??This is an acknowledgment of an entire area of the world and a heritage and multiple countries. This is not a racial thing,'' DuPuy said when asked why baseball had not run a similar promotion for black players. ??The Latin American influence in baseball has been pervasive.'' After signing Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, the New York Mets appear to have increased their marketing to Hispanics, with some dubbing the team ??Los Mets.'' Baseball spokesman Carmine Tiso said the sport did not track the percentage of season ticket holders who identify themselves as Hispanic. ??There are a number of segments of the marketplace that I'd like to see us continue to reach out to and Latins is one of those,'' DuPuy said. ??Kids from the ages of 12 until the time they get out of college are an area we need to focus on. They're great through Little League, and then through high school we tend to lose some of them.'' DuPuy said another priority is ??getting African-Americans back into our player base'' and cited Dontrelle Willis, Ricky Weeks and Delmon Young as signs of an improvement. ??I think we're doing much better player-wise, but I think we need to reach out to African-American fans,'' DuPuy said. Major League Baseball and mlb.com selected the 60 players on the ballot, which is sponsored by Chevrolet, and the Hall of Fame provided research. Eight position players, three starters and one reliever will be on the 12-man team. Marichal said others could have been included on the ballot ? he cited Tetelo Vargas, a Dominican whom the stadium is named after in San Pedro de Macoris, and Horacio Martinez, who became a scout and helped the Giants sign Marichal. Citing a recent merengue night at Shea Stadium, Marichal said baseball had already improved its marketing to Hispanics. ??Latins love the game,'' he said. ??Everywhere there's a Latin player, they come to the game, they come to the stadium.'' Source: AP Being of Cuban heritage it is about time players from Latin descent get their just do!!!

Impressive Statistics....
I decided to look at that TEAM ERA's for all the Major league ballclubs over the last 30 days and I was somewhat surprised to find the Marlins at #1 on that list. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/stats/sortab...mit&timeFrame=1 912435[/snapback] it shouldn't be that surprising with the fact that the club threw three shutouts last week and the pitching staff has been amazing!!!

FSU can keep Seminoles nickname
The NCAA removed the Florida State Seminoles on Tuesday from a list of 18 college and university nicknames subjected to restrictions because of their hostility to American Indians. The NCAA said it was recognizing the relationship Florida State has long enjoyed with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which assists the university with its pageantry and celebration of its culture and supports the school's use of its name. ??The staff review committee noted the unique relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida as a significant factor,'' the NCAA said Tuesday. ??The decision of a namesake sovereign tribe, regarding when and how its name and imagery can be used, must be respected even when others may not agree.'' Florida State President T.K. Wetherell had threatened to sue the NCAA immediately after its Aug. 5 announcement that the school's highly visible nickname, ??Seminoles,'' was defined as ??hostile and abusive'' by a committee. The NCAA said it would handle reviews from other schools on a case-by-case basis. The Illinois Illini, Utah Utes and North Dakota Fighting Sioux are among other prominent school nicknames that remain affected by the edict. Under the NCAA restrictions, teams with hostile nicknames would not be able to use them in postseason tournaments or bowl games. Source: AP it was just a matter of time before the went against the intentions....FSU has the permission from the Seminole Tribe of Florida....they put in way too much money into the NCAA for this issue to have been forced

Gooden Wanted
Former baseball star Dwight Gooden was being sought by police Tuesday on a felony warrant after he allegedly drove away from an officer who stopped him on suspicion of drunken driving. Gooden, 41, left the scene of the traffic stop early Monday after refusing to get out his 2004 BMW to take a field sobriety test, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. The officer stopped Gooden's car because he was weaving in traffic near downtown Tampa, McElroy said. Gooden, a Tampa native and resident, has a history of drug abuse and is awaiting trial on a domestic violence charge. ??The officer pulls over the car and immediately notices that the driver is under the influence,'' she said. ??He has bloodshot, glassy eyes, his speech his slurred and he has a strong odor of alcohol.'' Gooden handed the officer his driver's license but refused two requests to get out of the car, McElroy said. He then drove off with the officer still holding his license. Police chose not pursue for safety reasons, McElroy said, but went to his two known addresses to look for him. They also contacted his most recent employer, the New York Yankees, and his mother, she said. Yankees spokesman Howard Grosswirth said Tuesday that Gooden hasn't worked for the team as a special adviser since April and officials don't know his whereabouts. Gooden, who was out of jail on bail after a March domestic violence arrest, is wanted on felony charges of DUI and fleeing police, and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest without violence. ??At this point he is in a lot of trouble, and the only way he can help himself is to come forward and take responsibility for his actions,'' McElroy said. Gooden, the 1984 Rookie of the Year and the 1985 NL Cy Young Award winner while with the New York Mets, went 194-112 with a 3.51 ERA before retiring in 2001. He also pitched for the Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Gooden was arrested by Tampa police in 2002 on a drunken driving charge, but later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received a year probation. He was arrested in March and charged with hitting his live-in girlfriend in the face during an argument. He was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, and the case is pending. A call to Peter Hobson, the attorney representing Gooden in the domestic violence case, was not immediately returned Tuesday. During his playing days, Gooden was suspended for 60 days in 1994 for testing positive for cocaine while with the Mets. He tested positive for cocaine again while on suspension and was sidelined for the 1995 season. Earlier this month his son, Dwight Gooden Jr., 19, was jailed for violating his probation for cocaine possession. Police said they found marijuana and bullets in the younger Gooden's vehicle parked outside a nightclub. Gooden's disappearance is reminiscent of the 2001 disappearance of his friend and former teammate Darryl Strawberry, who was missing for four days after he walked away from a drug treatment center where he was under house arrest. This is so sad to hear a guy that had such a promising career and he threw it away, and his son is just following in dad's footsteps...SO SO SAD

wow tough call but if i were in your shoes i would make the deal since you said it is a passer heavy league...no better fantasy league quarterback than peyton manning and adding burleson, who will be minnesota's go-to-guy this year sans Randy Moss, is only an added bonus, ur stacked at RB so Deuce is expendable

Buster Olney (ESPN) agrees with me..
and now with the reported change that Jack might go back to Ish in that No. 5 hole could be a better rotation since Moel's seems to be gettin a lil tired...if this pitching holds on, I think that no one can keep up with this team

Heat Offseason Thread
Update: Finley will choose between signing with Miami or Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reports. Recommendation: Earlier reports said it was almost certain he'd sign with the Heat, but several league officials said the Pistons are still in the thick of it. Source: Rotowire.com
