Reigning Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch told Roush Racing he has signed with another racing team for 2007 and has asked to be released from his 2006 contract, Roush said Tuesday. It was not immediately clear who Busch has signed with, although Penske and Dale Earnhardt Inc. both have cars coming open next season. Busch currently stands fifth in this year's points race, 277 points behind leader Tony Stewart. Busch is one of five drivers currently racing in the Nextel Cup for Roush. The others are Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards. Source: AP

The Boston Red Sox tried to bolster their bullpen with yet another left-hander, getting Mike Remlinger and cash from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday for minor league pitcher Olivo Astacio. The AL East-leading Red Sox cut lefties Alan Embree and John Halama last month. Remlinger was designated for assignment by the Cubs last Friday. Remlinger, 39, was 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA in 35 games. He was sidelined from May 21-June 5 because of a broken finger on his left hand. He was especially effective against righty hitters, holding them to a .210 batting average. Remlinger had been one of the more reliable and durable lefty setup men in recent years. He was an NL All-Star in 2002 with Atlanta, which came during a stretch in which he made at least 70 appearances in five straight seasons. Last year, he was 1-2 with two saves and a 3.44 ERA in 48 games for the Cubs, and twice was on the disabled list. Remlinger also has pitched for San Francisco, the New York Mets and Cincinnati. Astacio, a 21-year-old righty, is 7-11 with a 4.33 ERA in 38 career games in the Boston system, spending much of his time in the rookie Gulf Coast League. In another roster move, the Cubs recalled outfielder Corey Patterson from Triple-A Iowa and optioned infielder Ronny Cedeno to Iowa. Cincinnati Reds players rallied around a 6-year-old boy after his grandfather collapsed in the stands this week. ??We just tried to make a bad situation a little better,'' outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. told the Cincinnati Enquirer. While paramedics were working on the grandfather, a security officer took the boy to the Reds' bullpen. The Reds did not release the name of the grandfather, who died Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack. The boy, identified as Antonio Perez, sat with players for the last two innings of the game, and Griffey went and got him when the game ended. The boy participated in the Reds' high-fives celebrating their 8-5 victory over Atlanta, and he then joined the players in the clubhouse. Clubhouse manager Rick Stowe said the Reds showered the boy with bats, wristbands and autographed baseballs. Shortstop Felipe Lopez gave him the batting helmet that he wore in this year's All-Star game. The players entertained the boy until his parents arrived. ??We play a game,'' Griffey told the Enquirer. ??What he was going through doesn't compare. It was important that the little guy not be by himself.''
