Heat Closing In On F Antoine Walker
Why dont we trade Eddie Jones??? I like EJ and everything, but I would like the Heat to trade EJ to get a good PG and then put Walker at the 3. Sure Walker isn't a great Defensive player, but is a nice shooter. You could get a nice PG for Eddie, allow Wade to play the 2, Walker at the 3, and then Haslem and Oneal.....Just a thought......... 882092 it looks like your wish may be coming true

anyone here on the latest, eddie jones
So much for just tweaking. Not satisfied with the makeup of a team that was one game from the NBA Finals, Heat president Pat Riley is considering making significant moves that could include trading swingman Eddie Jones and acquiring Memphis point guard Jason Williams, according to several NBA sources. Among the moves being considered is a trade that would send Jones to Memphis and bring Williams and small forward James Posey to Miami. Williams played three years with the Sacramento Kings and four with the Grizzlies, earning a reputation as a talented but troubled player. The Grizzlies have been trying to move him all offseason. However, Williams is among the best passers in the league, can run both a fast break and halfcourt offense and is a three-point threat. Posey is a quality defender with a versatile offensive game, but he spent much of last season battling nagging foot injuries that limited him to 50 games. Jones was the Heat's third-leading scorer last season and best perimeter defender, proving his worth during last year's run to the Eastern Conference finals. But trade rumors have surrounded the 11-year veteran since his first year in Miami. A THIRD TEAM A report out of Memphis had the Grizzlies, Heat and an unidentified team discussing a three-way trade involving Williams. But if the Heat and Grizzlies agreed to a swap of Jones for Williams and Posey, the move would work under the collective bargaining agreement without a third team needed. Williams is scheduled to make $7.5 million next season with three years remaining on his deal, and Posey is set to make $5.9 million on a deal that expires in 2007. Jones is scheduled to make $14.5 million next season, with two years left on the seven-year deal he signed in 2000. WALKER POSSIBLE The Heat also is considering adding free agent forward Antoine Walker, possibly in a sign-and-trade deal with Boston, though no agreement was imminent. Walker visited with Riley last week, and although a straight signing of the free agent is unlikely, the Heat could package Michael Doleac, Rasual Butler and its $1.9 million trade exception to Boston in exchange for Walker. That would allow Walker to sign for a starting salary of about $6 million, and the Celtics would not have to take on much salary in return. Doleac is in the second year of a four-year deal that pays him $2.6 million next year, and Butler is in the final year of his contract and will make about $1.5 million next season. The Heat also will look into players released using the new amnesty rule that allows teams over the luxury tax to waive a player. EYE ON FINLEY If the Dallas Mavericks waive Michael Finley (reports have varied on the Mavericks' intentions) the Heat would be interested in signing the swingman who once played for Heat coach Stan Van Gundy when he coached the University of Wisconsin. The league set an Aug. 15 deadline for teams to release players under the amnesty rule. The league's moratorium will end at noon Tuesday, and a flurry of activity is expected then. The Heat is expected to announce the re-signing of Shaquille O'Neal to a possible five-year deal worth as much as $125 million as well as formally announce the re-signing of Udonis Haslem to a five-year, $30.7 million deal. And despite the interest in the Grizzlies' Williams, point guard Damon Jones remains a strong possibility to return. Source: Miami Herald

Heat Closing In On F Antoine Walker
There is no offical word as to Walker signing with the Heat, he met wit Riley yesterday but no deal has been signed or agreed upon....if something like that were to happen he would have to accept alot less than the 14.6 million he made last year and be ready to come off the bench, which i don't think Walker is willing to do

Manny wants out of Boston
Manny Ramirez's trade request will be difficult to honor because of his contract, Boston Red Sox president Admin Lucchino said Thursday. Lucchino also said he didn't know the left fielder's motivation for refusing manager Terry Francona's request to play Wednesday afternoon's game at Tampa Bay after another outfielder, Trot Nixon, was sidelined with a strained muscle in his side. Before the injury, Francona told Ramirez he could have the day off. ??It's hard to know if the events of the last couple of days are the result of sort of psychological and physical needs for a sustained period of rest or it's some calculation or some move to encourage us to trade him,'' Lucchino told WEEI radio on his regularly scheduled segment. Lucchino and Ramirez's agent, Scott Parker, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. Team owner John Henry and general manager Theo Epstein did not respond to e-mails, and the Red Sox clubhouse was locked on their day off Thursday. Ramirez is batting .275 with 28 homers and a major league-leading 92 RBIs for the Red Sox, who lead the AL East by 1? games over the New York Yankees. He is due $57 million over the remaining three years of his contract. On Tuesday, Sports Illustrated reported on its Web site that Ramirez, for at least the third time in four seasons, had asked to be traded. The report said he told club officials he was unhappy in Boston, especially with an off-field lack of privacy. The Red Sox will explore trading him before Sunday's deadline, but that will be tough, Lucchino said. ??Because of the size of his contract, obviously, it's hard,'' he said. ??There aren't a lot of clubs that are going to be interested, but it depends how little you're willing to take in return with respect to trades. I'm not talking about Manny specifically, although it certainly applies to him.'' A club might want to make a deal if it asks the Red Sox to pay 95 percent of Ramirez's salary, ??but that's not a particularly intelligent thing for us to do,'' Lucchino said. He also said this is the fourth straight season in which Ramirez has requested a trade ??and our general response was, ?it's that time of year' and we'll explore it as we explore other trades.'' Boston may resist trading Ramirez because it is short in the outfield. With Nixon on the 15-day disabled list and Ramirez not playing, Francona used first baseman Kevin Millar in left field and rookie Adam Stern in right Wednesday. Despite leading the division, Red Sox officials would like to improve their postseason chances with a trade. Last year, Epstein sent shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs at the deadline. ??It is the time of year when you consider all manner of trades,'' Lucchino said. ??Theo is certainly willing to be bold and make moves that other GMs might shy away from, so this is the time for us to think about trades and, certainly, Manny's name will come up from time to time, I'm sure, in the next 72 hours.'' Goodenow steps down
Bob Goodenow is stepping down as head of the NHL Players' Association, less than a week after the union and league approved a new labor deal to end a lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season. ??With the conclusion of the negotiations and the ratification of the new agreement, the parties concur that this is an appropriate action for the future,'' Goodenow said in a statement Thursday. ??I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve the players over the past 15 years and to have had the support of a tremendous staff at the NHLPA,'' he said. It is widely believed that the new labor deal, with its salary cap and linkage to league revenues, was not favored by Goodenow, who had several years left on his contract. ??This decision followed discussions between Goodenow and members of the executive committee about the organization's future,'' the NHLPA said in a statement. Ted Saskin, the union's senior director of business affairs and licensing, will succeed Goodenow as executive director and general counsel. Source: AP

New York (Martinez) at Houston (Astacio), 8:05 EST Who do we root for? If I had to pick a winner I say the Mets just because Pedro gets up for games like this but I dont know if I want him to pitch well or not? 877558 Astros because a Mets loss helps in the division and in the wild card while an Astros loss only helps for the wild card. 877560 I agree with the Head Fish

Current record when I attend with my father 0-7 Current record with my girl 7-1 I feel terrible, but I am wondering if my own father is a curse to the marlins winning if he goes to the game. I need to find something to uncurse him, hmm hexes or garlic or lucky rabbits foot. 876380 no offense to your pops, but he needs to stay home to test the theroy....bring the lady friend and lets get another W with her in the Fish's corner as for TV, Herald has it as on ESPN...not sure if that is 100% accurate but it is worth of shot, if not it might be a night for FELO to the rescue cause god knows i can't listen to DVH all night long

Alfonseca activated
The only reason i can see that Jason is still here is A. he is left handed; B. They are not sure of the status of Ismael Valdes and his start on Wednesday; C. Maybe the AJ deal is closer that we think...could be any of those three options anyhow.....AA looked completely incredible tonight working his way out of the bases loaded jam

chances of re-signing gonzalez next off season
All depends how much AGon is going to ask for in the offseason...if he is going to ask for Jimmy Rollins type money then the Marlins don't have a chance in Hell if he is willing to settle for less money like his partner in crime Luis Castillo did a few years back then i can see the fish ponying up with that type of deal to keep the middle of the field on lock down if he is to go then i can see the fish going with either rookie Robert Andino or Josh Wilson next season, i don't think the would go with a stop gap player...

Alfonseca activated
The Florida Marlins' pitching staff received a boost with Antonio Alfonseca rejoining the bullpen and Ismael Valdez returning to the rotation. Both right-handers have been sidelined much of the season with injuries. ??It's like making a trade,'' manager Jack McKeon said Tuesday. Alfonseca was activated after spending three months on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his elbow. He's 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA in six games. Valdez, who missed the first 3? months of the season with a broken right fibula, will make his first start Wednesday against Pittsburgh. ??I'm a little nervous,'' he said. ??I just want to face some hitters and do the best I can.'' Valdez pitched two innings of relief Friday at San Francisco in his first appearance of the year. To make room on the roster for Alfonseca, the Marlins optioned right-hander Randy Messenger to Triple-A Albuquerque. Right-hander Nate Bump was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. Source: AP

Red Sox Moves 7/26
The Boston Red Sox called up right-handed reliever Manny Delcarmen and designated left-hander John Halama for assignment on Tuesday. Delcarmen, a second-round draft pick by Boston in 2000, had a 2.79 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 9 2-3 innings with Triple-A Pawtucket. He began the season at Double-A Portland, where he was 4-4 with three saves and a 3.23 ERA in 31 games. Halama was part of an ineffective Red Sox bullpen, going 1-1 with a 6.16 ERA in 30 games, 29 in relief, since signing as a free agent last December. His major league career began with Houston in 1998 and he pitched for Tampa Bay last season. The Red Sox have 10 days to decide whether to waive him or trade him. He is the second lefty reliever designated for assignment by Boston in eight days, following Alan Embree. Delcarmen, a Boston native, has 353 strikeouts in 326 2-3 innings over five minor-league seasons with a 19-22 record, four saves and a 3.80 ERA in 98 games. He pitched in JUST four games in the 2003 season, when he underwent elbow ligament surgery. Source: AP

NHL Offseason Thread
The Tampa Bay Lightning signed coach John Tortorella and general manager Jay Feaster to long-term contract extensions Tuesday, keeping together the duo that helped guide the franchise to its first Stanley Cup in 2004. ??Before the Stanley Cup Championship, and since, both have exhibited qualities to make you want to keep this team together for a long time,'' team president Ron Campbell said. Entering his fifth season as coach, Tortorella's extension keeps him with the Lightning through 2008-09. His previous deal was due to expire at the end of the 2005-06 season. Tortorella was named the NHL's Coach of the Year in 2003-04 after leading Tampa Bay to its second straight division title and first NHL crown. He is 121-114-36-18 in four seasons with Tampa Bay, though the Lightning are 35 games over .500 the past two seasons. The Lightning's GM since 2002, Feaster's deal will now extend through 2010-11 season. The team had previously held an option on Feaster for the 2006-07 season. Source: AP

Al Michaels to stay on MNF
Al Michaels is staying with Monday Night Football when it moves from ABC to ESPN for the 2006 NFL season, parting with John Madden after four seasons in the booth together. Michaels has been the play-by-play man on Monday Night Football since 1986, the last three with Madden as analyst. After this season, Madden is moving to NBC, which is taking over the Sunday night time slot in 2006 for what the NFL considers its main prime-time package. ??I feel like I'm a creature of Monday night. I'm home and I'm staying home,'' said Michaels, who had been heavily pursued by NBC, but said he wanted to stay where he has worked for 29 years ? ABC and ESPN are both owned by the Disney Co. ??The three words 'Monday Night Football' resonate like no other,'' he said during a news conference Tuesday to announce the lineup. Michaels will be joined in the booth by Joe Theismann, who had teamed with play-by-play man Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire on ABC's Sunday night games. Michelle Tafoya and Suzy Kolber will be the sideline reporters. ESPN vice president Mark Shapiro said Maguire and Patrick are both expected to stay with ESPN. He said Maguire will be part of a two-hour Monday night pregame show to be hosted by Chris Berman, who has hosted the network's Sunday night ??NFL Primetime.'' NBC, which had been without NFL football since losing its contract to CBS in 1997, announced Tuesday that Bob Costas will host its Sunday night pregame show. Source: AP
