July 26, 200521 yr The Tampa Bay Lightning signed coach John Tortorella and general manager Jay Feaster to long-term contract extensions Tuesday, keeping together the duo that helped guide the franchise to its first Stanley Cup in 2004. ??Before the Stanley Cup Championship, and since, both have exhibited qualities to make you want to keep this team together for a long time,'' team president Ron Campbell said. Entering his fifth season as coach, Tortorella's extension keeps him with the Lightning through 2008-09. His previous deal was due to expire at the end of the 2005-06 season. Tortorella was named the NHL's Coach of the Year in 2003-04 after leading Tampa Bay to its second straight division title and first NHL crown. He is 121-114-36-18 in four seasons with Tampa Bay, though the Lightning are 35 games over .500 the past two seasons. MarKus N?slund isnt known as a big talker who critises anyone. But there is one person he cant stand its Mike Keenan. -Mike Keenan liked to scare and intimidate the prospects and the less established players just to boost his ego.After a while i felt it was way past my limit of what i could take. -When he first got here i ended up in the stands because he wanted "tougher" players.It was a very hard time for me,luckily for me players got injured and i got the chance to play.That was the turning point for me. Even though he had his breakout seasson with Keenan he is still bitter about it. -I felt offended by his behaviour,a person who likes to put down others like that is a very 'insecure person'

August 1, 200521 yr Good moves for the Panthers. Roberts will be a GREAT fit as he will blend in well with the offensive talents you guys have. Niewy should provide solid leadership and around 40-50 points. You guys get a solid D and you are a playoff team IMO.

Finally the type of players this team has needed for so long to help lead the likes of Jokinen, Weiss, Horton, etc...Proven scorers (they would have been #1 and #3 in points in 03-04), and the experience of being on winning teams, the leadership qualities can't be stressed enough. And tough, hard-nosed players as well! Way to go Panthers stealing the headlines on the first day of the new NHL!
August 1, 200521 yr I like the personnel -- but I think we overpaid for them considering their age/salary cap. 2.25 mil seems like alot for two 39 year olds. We'll see what Keenan has up his sleeves.

The Herald learned Monday that the two, who were not offered qualifying offers from Toronto, had agreed to terms with the team and likely would be introduced by the Panthers later this afternoon. Roberts, a left winger who made $4.25 million in 2003-04 season, was an Eastern Conference All-Star that season and scored 28 goals with 20 assists. In the postseason, Roberts played in 13 games for the Leafs, scoring four goals and assisting on four others. He missed the first 57 games of the 2002-03 season because of shoulder surgery. Nieuwendyk, a center, missed parts of the last season with back problems, but was big in the Leafs' postseason, scoring six goals in nine games -- including two goals in the Game 7 of the Leafs' 4-1 win against Ottawa in the Eastern Conference opening round. Nieuwendyk, signed by Toronto away from New Jersey after the 2002-03 season, scored 22 goals with 28 assists in '03-04. Nieuwendyk started his career in Calgary in 1987, and spent nine years with the Flames before going to Dallas in 1995. He was traded to the Devils in 2002. Nieuwendyk scored three goals with six assists in New Jersey's run to the Stanley Cup in 2003.
