August 2, 200521 yr The Islanders defense took another hard hit on Tuesday when Adrian Aucoin became the third of the team's top three defenseman to leave the franchise. Aucoin, 31, signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Islanders had offered the unrestricted free agent $13 million over four years. The loss of Aucoin, along with the departures of Kenny Jonsson (signed in Sweden) and Roman Hamrlik (expected to sign elsewhere), leaves the Islanders with just one experienced defenseman, Janne Niinimaa. There are still several quality defensemen left on the free agent open market, but they are going fast. Adam Foote signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night. Scott Niedermayer, Brian Leetch, Brian Rafalski and Sergei Gonchar still remain. Leetch, the former Ranger, is a prime target of the Islanders, but he is not expected to sign right away. Leetch plans to follow the market and decide where he wants to go depending upon the makeup of a team and their chances to contend. Right now, the Islanders do not have the makeup of a contender.

On top of that, they traded Danny Markov to the Predators for a 3rd rounder....3rd rounder!!!! He's BY FAR A better player than Rathje is -- and in the "new NHL" he might even be an improvement over Hatcher. I can't believe what I saw -- usually Clarke is a very dependable GM. /rant

IMO, the Panthers need to make a serious push for a top-tier center. The money must have been right, because if I were Keenan, the top two guys on my shopping list would have been Kovalev and Foote. Yes, I know, neither are centers.
August 2, 200521 yr I love the Gelinas signing, though the average age of out team has increased ten fold over the past few days :lol . It will be interesting to see how points develop this season. Someone who was a consistent 30-40 point guy for the past few years may very well be a 50 point guy under the new rules and smaller goalie equipment. It will be very interesting to see how this all turns out.

We already have Olli, Joe N, Nederost who is going to be very good. I'd rather us pick up a big winger to put along side Olli.
