Good trade or Bad trade?
WHAT!!! You want a better argument? Well, what about this: there is a reason Conine has more ABs than Banks and Hollandsworth combined. It is called being a regular in the lineup. And do you know why he is a regular? Because he can produce. It is a miracle that Banks and Hollandsworth are still in the 200's. Try giving each one of them 400 ABs and then do a comparison with Conine. OMG, the things you have to hear.... a better argument... don't make me laugh!!! I don't think we're on the same wavelength. I'm not saying Banks or Hollandsworth is better than Conine. Conine is most definitely a better hitter than both those players. My problem is: do you think the 4 or 5 additional hits Conine will provide is worth giving up the best pitcher in your farm system?

Good trade or Bad trade?
It's not a matter of who we do and dont still have in our system, it's a matter of value and it's quite clear that we didn't come relativley close to getting fair value for Denny Bautista and Don Levinski. 100% correct. Simply put, the best pitching prospect in your system should net more than a 38-year-old with an OPS under .800.

Good trade or Bad trade?
In other words, Conine has more runs, 2B, HRs, RBIs and batting average than Banks and Hollandsworth combined. Derrrr...he also has about 150 more ABs than Hollandsworth/Banks combined. You gotta make a better argument than that.

the official I wanna die thread/club
Are you crying over losing Bautista, who is 28 and 20 with a 3.54 ERA in 4 years That's a pretty ignorant comment. Why don't you do some research and name all the 21-year-olds currently in AA with more Ks than IP that can throw 98 mph. What about gettin a great player and an excellent LF A "great" player? An "excellent" LF? We got Jeff Conine.

This Trade Isn't About Destroying Our Future...
prospects can only get you so far. Jeff Conine can only get you so far.

Good trade or Bad trade?
Sigh...I've already commented on how horrible I think this trade is. Conine will not do a significantly better job than a Banks/Hollandsworth platoon would have. At least, not enough to warrant giving away the best prospect in our farm system. Conine better hit well over .300 in these next 4 weeks.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
If Conine hits over .300 over these last 4 weeks with at least 4 homers and the Fish make the playoffs, then I might think the deal was worth it. Other than that, the trade will be a complete disaster.

marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
One thing you don't seem to understand... The Marlins weren't going to get any LF without giving up alot. How much better do you think Conine will do than Banks? Or Hollandsworth? Or even Abe Nunez? Three extra hits maybe. Maybe one extra home run.

marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
SO you just stand pat and let this current team ride it out on the supposition that a 20 year old prospect might become something one day down the road? What did we add Fillet? We didn't add Brian Giles, or Jose Guillen, or even Reggie Sanders. WE ADDED JEFF CONINE. Do you think Jeff Conine is even that much better than Todd Hollandsworth or Brian Banks? Do you think the two or three extra hits Conine might provide over the next 3 weeks is worth giving up the best player on your farm system? Please.

marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
To add some perspective...to land Rondell White, the Royals gave up a 25-year-old AA pitcher with less Ks than IP, and a single-A pitcher who's 5-11 with a 4.38 ERA.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
is bautista the best in the farm now? Yes. Look around the minors and see how many 21-year-olds you can find in AA. Then see how many of them have more K's than IP.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
you have to give to get. You don't have to give up the best pitcher in your farm system to get a 38-year-old hitter with an OPS under .800. At least, you don't if you're not a complete retard.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
If they kept Banks in and didn't do anything everyone would be b***hing about that instead of this. Conine better hit .320 and smack 5-7 homers, or else there'll be a lot more to b*tch about.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
Either way their only worth most times is as trade bait. I'd like to think that the Fish could get more than Jeff friggin Conine with the best pitcher in their entire farm system

marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
personally i dont think we were in such a horrible plight that we NEEDED to get Conine This hits the nail on the head. Conine isn't going to perform that much better than Hollandsworth or Banks would have. And we gave up our best pitching prospect to get him! This is such a horrible trade.

marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
Calm down people. Think logically here. They know and we know that there may not be a chance of making the playoffs again for awhile. Bautista ain't gonna help us make it this year, Jeff should help. I am in favor of this deal STILL. It hurts our future potentially but lets do this thing this year. I applaud Beinfest. Admin, look at what the Royals GM (one of the stupidest GMs in baseball) gave up for Rondell White. Then tell me what you think about this trade.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
Next year or 2005 are a million years away. Bautista is a terrific prospect, but that's what he is - a prospect. The Marlins did absolutely the right thing considering the hand (no pun intended) they were dealt by the baseball gods, and even with a gun at their head, Beinfest wasn't afraid to make the deal. I say congrats! The Padres didn't give up much more to land Brian Giles! The Fish just gave up their #1 pitching prospect for a 38-year-old player, that's insane.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
do you want to try and win this year or not? what did you expect the orioles to take, Neal and Nunez? They took our best pitching prospect. For Jeff Conine. Not a good move. And we even threw in Levinski? Geez...
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
the orioles received pitchers Bautista and levinski for conine Umm...this deal is horrible. Horrible horrible trade. Wow.
-
marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
Well, Sanders or Stairs probably would've been better acquisitions, but Conine is definitely an upgrade. I'm curious to see what prospects were traded. Hopefully no one like Stokes, Bautista, Hutchinson, Willingham, etc.

marlins acquire Jeff Conine !
Stuart Scott just mentioned it as the very last comment on SportsCenter...wonder who we gave up.

Miguel Cabrera
The notion of trading Cabrera for Giles is absurd when you consider what San Diego traded away for Giles (or rather, what they didn't trade away). The Pads not only kept their best young hitter in Sean Burroughs, but they also kept their second best young hitter in Xavier Nady. And neither Burroughs nor Nady are even in the same league as Cabs as far as potential goes. What exactly did the Pads give up? A hitter who has just now reached the majors at age 24 (Jason Bay), a 23-year-old pitcher who has a 3.72 ERA in AA (Corey Stewart), and a 22-year-old pitcher who, although he has great stuff, has been hit pretty hard in the majors (Oliver Perez). And LeBatard wants the Fish to trade away a 20-year-old who is already producing at a better clip than most 25- and 26-year-olds? Why? What the Pads gave up for Giles would probably be equivalent to the Marlins giving up a package of Josh Willingham, Trevor Hutchinson, and Donnie Bridges for Giles. Maybe even less than that. If the Pads didn't have to trade Burroughs to land Giles, then the idea of trading Cabrera to land Giles is patently ridiculous. And LeBatard's Renteria comparison is silly. Cabrera just very well might become one of the top 5 hitters in baseball. No one thought Renteria had that much ability.

Options?
look whos calling the kettle black yourself you idiot. I don't recall ever talking about my athletic abilities on this board. By the way, no need for the name-calling. I was arguing against him and giving him advice you freaking moron. Theres a difference between that and bragging. brag (brg) v. intr. 1. To talk in a self-admiring way If recounting tales of clay-stained bathtubs and orange boxers is not talking in a self-admiring way, then I don't know what is. I have to admit though, that is some good advice. Are you listening Wild Card? If your boxers aren't orange, then you aren't playing hard enough!

Marlins working on a deal?
Either Sanders or Stairs would be really solid acquisitions. Both have been red-hot since the all-star break.

Reggie Sanders Claimed by LA.
I think both Reggie Sanders and Matt Stairs would do a solid job replacing Lowell's bat in the lineup. I haven't really followed who's cleared waivers and who hasn't, but if either player can be acquired cheaply, then I think it's worth it. Still, it's not a huge loss if we don't acquire anybody. Bobby Valentine (of all people) made a good point on BBTN: Lowell is just one player, and even with an average replacement, you probably lose about 9 or 10 additional runs over the last 26 games without him in the lineup. That's not a whole lot (about one less run every 3 games). Then take into consideration that Lowell was slumping even before the injury, and his loss probably has even less impact. The bottom line is, if the Fish wanna stay in this race, the current batters need to start hitting the way they're capable of hitting. Specifically, Pudge, Encarnacion, and Lee need to step it up. All three hit well below their usual levels in August. If those players can just return to their usual levels of production, then the offense should be fine. The pitching also needs to get better, as Redman and Willis have not been as good as they were in the beginning of the season. But I don't think Lowell's injury takes us out of the playoff picture.
