Joe Borchard
Borchard has looked terrible so far this season. I think we'll end up with a Cody / Jeremy platoon in RF once Jeremy comes back.

"He's still our man"
My dissapointment stems from his arrogance in this matter. Why does Beinfest think that someone who hasn't performed in 2 years can magically turn it around? And why does he still maintain that view in the face of first-hand experience to the contrary? The only answer is arrogance. He believes that he's right, and it seems that he won't admit to being wrong until the team is six feet under ground. Finally, why should Beinfest jeopardize the outstanding performance of 24 guys, by putting his ego in front of their success? That's the question that kills me. Julio had an okay year last year (4.23 ERA / 1.32 WHIP / .210 BAA) and I think Beinfest expected Julio to be helped by the PPS dimensions. Obviously things haven't worked out the first 7 games but so far we've been fortunate in that his implosions have cost us only one game.. maybe two depending on the outcome of the 2-2 game. I doubt Julio will continue closing.

4/10/07: Brewers at Marlins
Another routine adventure by Willy. I don't know pierre.. he's pretty bad but I don't think he's as bad as you make him out to be.

Thoughts After Week 1
The starters stats: ERA - tied for 9th with 3.92 (NL average: 3.78) Innings per start - tied for 14th with 5.57 (NL average: 5.99) OPS allowed - 14th with .800 (NL average: .718) I still say the hitting is carrying the team.

Thoughts After Week 1
The hitting has carried the team. The OPS is .200+ over the league average. The starting pitching has been mediocre at best. I don't think any pitcher has gone 7 innings in any start. The bullpen, other than Julio, has been surprisingly dominant. Hopefully they keep it up but I'm not convinced they will.

Tommy Hutton on 790
Thank you so much for posting that. I suppose the main question right now is who gets sent down once Tankersley comes back. if Pinto is out of options, my guess is Lindstrom or Jason Wood(highly unlikely with all these injuries) Why would Pinto be out of options? Last year was his first year. I'm not sure how the options work but don't they get 3 years where they can be sent up and down?

Tommy Hutton on 790
I don't usually like Tommy very much but he was just on 790 and was very informative: Julio ===== - will get the night off tonight - would get the 9th in a save situation Tuesday - One or two more struggles and a change would be (or should) made (not sure which of the two he said) - there's a number of pitchers who can possibly close - can't continue messing up at the end as it demoralizes the team - scouts say he's trying too hard to impress the new team Hermida ======= - not ready for another 2 or 3 weeks - will play some minor league games once he's ready - will have to win a job once he joins the team Tank ==== - would bet he's ready by the weekend series with the Braves Hammer & Hanley =============== - will likely miss a couple of games - need to be careful with Hanley b/c hamstrings can linger
-
Julio will be clsoing for a while
if it wasnt for beinfest we wouldnt HAVE the players. Beinfest is a good GM but he had nothing to do with Cabrera or Willingham being here and without Beckett we wouldn't have Hanley. He deserves credit but he's not a miracle worker and he's not Mr. Perfect and he was incredibly fortunate to take over a team loaded with young talent.

Lost in all this is Scott Olsen.
3 ER in 5 innings equals a crappy start. if you just look at it like that, yeah. he did sh*tty (not too sh*tty that it cost us the game, though), in the first inning but rebounded and then kicked ass the next 4 innings. that's a good thing. He could have been worse so I guess he could get some credit for not giving up the lead after we took it but I don't understand how anyone can say he had a good game.

4/8/07: Phillies at Marlins
Olsen has the nastiest stuff but he can really get wild... can someone say AJ? :lol I just did.....I don't get why Olsen gets a pass for this but AJ is the most hated person in the world. Olsen talks trash about the other teams and fans like that. I would take less talk and more production. Exactly....kid has a mouth that doesn't cash checks... To Holly. he doesn't have that nasty stuff. This board has decided to overrate his abilities I agree 100%.

Game 5 Thoughts
Let's not compare De Aza to Luis yet. Let's see where he is in 4 weeks, not 4 games, before we get excited at all. I mean, the season is so young that if the guy goes 0-4 tomorrow, his average will fall almost 60 points and be under .300 Let's not forget that he is a career .266 minor league hitter. Sure, I am glad he is off to a fast start, but I will withhold judgment on making him the next big thing until I see more than 4 games worth of ABs from a guy. :thumbup

Game 5 Thoughts
It would not be a very good idea, IMO, to have De Aza stealing at bats from Hammer and Jacobs each game It sounds like to me that she was more advocating taking at bats away from Uggla. If that's what she was saying, then I agree with her. Eventually that may happen but to do it after 5 games would be nuts. I don't expect Uggla to repeat his '06 numbers but I expect him to outhit De Aza. If De Aza continues to get on base and Uggla continues to struggle then have De Aza leading off and move Uggla down to the bottom but you have to give Uggla a lot more than 5 games.

A-Rod up with the bases loaded
When will the lame fans of New York learn to appreciate ARod? Never. ARod and Jeter have been compared their entire careers and ARod is and has always been the far better player (not even close) and because Yankee fans are in love with Jeter they have always hated ARod and they continue to hate him. Yankee fans are idiots. Rather than embracing a great player they treat him like sh*t.

How many SBs will Hanley have this year?
I dont think he will be a 40-40 but I could see 30-30 in 1-2 years time. He can certainly be a 30/30 man in a few season and when that happens, the Marlins will probably have the best left infield in baseball, passing the measly A-Rod/Jeter combo. Well last year with the bat Hanley and Miguel were pretty much on a par with Jeter and ARod and that's with Jeter having a career type year so I don't think it will take a few seasons for Hanley and Miguel to pass them. I would bet this year they'll pass them.

Philly Series
I think we have the advantage in today's pitching matchup. Moyer WAS the better pitcher at one time, but I'm not sure he still is at this point in his career. Last year his combined record with the Mariners and the Phillies was 11-14 with an ERA of 4.30. Now, those aren't exactly terrible numbers, but I'd say that they're far from good. Moyer has 20 years in the majors and has finished with an ERA under 4.00 in 8 of those seasons, with the last one being in 2003. Mitre on the other hand, doesn't have near the track record of Moyer, but I'd like to think that: 1. He's got more upside due to his age. 2. His stuff is better at this point in his career than Moyer's is at this point in his career. 3. Mitre has more motivation to perform well due to the Marlins having pitchers that can jump in and take his spot in the rotation. Last year Moyer's 4.30 ERA was better than the average starter's ERA. With his 4.30 ERA and 200+ innings at this stage of his career Moyer is basically a No. 3 starter. Other than prinmemito I don't know of anyone else who expects Mitre to become a No. 3 starter. Perhaps you do as well. If Mitre was starting for the Phillies we would be licking our chops right now.

Philly Series
One of the signs of an impending injury is having several bad outings. Usually something isn't right, the pitcher ignores it and keeps pitching, and then finally all hell breaks loose and he's so injured he has no choice but to come out. Is your point that Mitre got pounded on May 5th because he was injured? If yes, how are you so sure?

Philly Series
Instead of looking at career stats which for any number of reasons may not be indicative of how well he pitches when healthy and starting, last April he finished the month with 3.82 ERA. He's starting and he's healthy (knock on wood) in 2007 and for myself that's the comparison I think is most relevant. I would feel differently if he had four or five hundred innings under his belt about using career numbers but with 161 total inning and in 2005 for example he had three times as many relief appearances as starts, and 2006 double. So for me the career number is less an indicator than it might be with a more experienced pitcher. I don't disagree with much of what you wrote however why look only at the 5 starts he made in April? He made two starts in May before going on the DL. On May 12th he only made 3 pitches so I think that's where he got injured and that one should be ignored. He made a start on May 5th in which he got pounded. In his 6th starts, including the May 5th start, he averaged 5.8 innings with a 4.89 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Was he injured on May 5th and that's the reason he got pounded? I don't remember. Either way I think it's obvious to anyone other than a Malins homer that Moyer is better than Mitre.

Philly Series
The way he's been pitching and given that Moyer is 50 years old I think we have the advantage. We can agree to disagree. I'm not going to get into an argument. Moyer's age is irrelevant as long as he continues to perform well. Are you one of those people that puts a lot of weight on ST stats? It seems to me that you are given that you're so high on Mitre based his ST. He started well last season, too. I just think he's got great stuff when he's on, but the main weakness in his career has been an inability to be consistent. This is probably because he's never really had a solid 3rd pitch, which by all accounts he has apparently gotten this season. So now he has a sinking fastball, a changeup, and a curve. That's pretty good. Plus, if I am not mistaken, we shelled Moyer at least once last season. Mitre has a career ERA over 6.00 and Moyer went 3-0 vs us last year so frankly I have no idea where you're coming from other than you're exhibiting homerism to its worst degree.

Philly Series
One of two things happen: 1) We sweep the Phillies; or 2) Win only one or two games because our bullpen blows it. I think we have the pitching advantage in every game, except maybe Saturday's game. I think we have an advantage then, too, but when Bretty Myers is on he's really good. Mitre > Moyer? That's ridiculous. Can you explain why you think Mitre is better than Moyer?

Marlins Stadium Bills Advance
I forget what the estimate of the incremental revenues in the new stadium were but I think it was well over $50 million to start with in Year 1 (and grwing each year thereafter) and if that's the case then a $2 million a year rebate from the state is peanuts and in no way should blow the deal. In the previious years the failure to get the rebate has served as a convenient excuse but in reality it hasn't been a deal breaker.

Latest Comments on New Stadium
As the growth of the 3 county area grows northward That's no longer the case. From the census data that came out just a few weeks ago from '05 to '06 Miami-Dade's population growth of 1.1% was higher than Broward's (0.6%) and Palm Beach's (0.7%) and I expect the latest trend to continue because the Tallahassee geniuses are doing nothing to fix our ridiculous property tax scheme.
