Does anybody have the same feeling of frustration right now? I don't exactly know what to say, but I know I have to say something. This is it. It's just disgusting when you're up 1-0 on the best pitcher in the game right now in the 7th and we manage to lose 6-1. Ugh.

What is most frustrating is we do not take advantage of opportunities to win. All of our losses for the past 3 weeks have been games where we were either leading or were close as we approached the later innings.

We are not hitting in critical situations, and our relief pitching isn't getting the job done. No lead is safe for us.

This will have to change for us to have any hope of making the playoffs.

definitely - you feel like we should have about 4 or 5 more wins than we do right now.

keep in mind we were losing 2-1 when the bullpen came in last night.

the bullpen can't score runs.

(i think we should've won about 2 more games also though)

True as that is, hitters feel 10x more confident they can come back and get one run instead of five. The more runs the bullpen relinquishes, the less hope hitters have.

Good point.

However, if the pen had kept the game at 2-1, the hitters would have approached their at bats differently than being down by 5 runs.

? How would they of approached their AB differently?

I don't know, but they had this "I suck" look on their faces.

The following:

You guys are underestimating the fact that these people are professionals and go into every AB with the purpose of getting on base.

The Marlins 2 problems:

1. The Bullpen

2. The Struggling Bats

#2 won't be a long term problem, but #1 will be the downfall of the Marlins if they aren't playing in October, and is a major concern.

You don't think little leaguers go into every at-bat looking for a base hit? I don't care who you are, being down five runs compared to one changes your mind-set.

Every statistical study debunks this myth. Maybe you should go beyond subjective analysis and get to the heart of the matter...what actually happens in these situations.

You must not actually play baseball.

Stats can't tell you what the batter's thinking. Sorry, that excuse don't fly.

Wow, I've never heard that response before. I've played, watched, scouted, etc, etc, baseball since I was 5 years old. Try not attacking me personally and actually look at the data.

Data, stats, same word. Same response. Data can't tell me what a batter is thinking. I know that if I, personally, came up to bat and my team were down by one with an inning or two left, I'd want to get on any way possible at any cost. If we're down five with one or two innings to go and you're facing a Lidge-type guy, you're less determined.

Do you really think baseball players of this caliber, with the competition of good contracts so intense, that they would let their mental concentration fall that low? Maybe in very isolated instances, but the statistics show that in situations of being down 5 or more runs that offense for the down team does not drop from their average offensive output.

In THIS instance, I don't care what statistics show. You are LESS determined to succeed when you're down by five (the same probably applies when you're up by five), and most likely MORE determined to succeed when you're down by one.

Well, since you are an expert on the psychological mindset of a MLB player, I guess I have nothing else to say.

And since statistics prove all, I guess I'm all out of words too. :rollseyes
