June 21, 200422 yr Where is Beltran from? Is there any chance of signing him to a three year deal? Can we use some of that "Vlad" money? Please tell me Boras is not his agent... :headscratch Beltran's from Puerto Rico. If we trade for this guy, we better sign him. I don't think our FO is stupid enough to jeopardize the future of this franchise by renting an OF for a couple of months. If they are, I staunchly oppose this trade! If we sign Beltran we'd be screwing up our future worse than if we didn't. All our young pitchers we'll walk because we won't be able to sign them, and there's no way we'll be able to sign Cabrera when he hits free agency.
June 21, 200422 yr Sorry if I'm not going to partake in this quest to rent an overrated player just to make a statement that we're still buyers or willing to take risks or something. It's simply not worth it and we could get by with less. How about Raul Ibanez??? Or Matt Stairs. Or Frank Catalanotto. Or Michael Tucker. Anyone but Beltran.

It's all about chances and your lineup. Baustita, eh? Don't you think we need another lefthanded bat? If he starts he gives more lefthanded power. If he platoons Conine can play the outfield which he does very well. If he's just on the bench he'll be an improvement over Lenny Harris and righty-dominant Nunez.
June 22, 200422 yr rondell white will hit left handed or right handed pitching... by the trading deadline detroit will be out of it
June 22, 200422 yr The rent a player idea is hard to deal with but if it results in a repeat championship... it would be worth it IMO anyway. Of course there is no way to know it'll work. I'm with you that if Rent A Player=World Title, it's worth it. Urbina was no guarantee.
June 22, 200422 yr Whatever Beinfest could get us to help the offense, I will agree with that decision
June 22, 200422 yr A little more fuel to the fire....from Ken Rosenthal at Sporting News. "At first glance, the Red Sox appear to come closest to meeting Royals G.M. Allard Baird's demands for CF Carlos Beltran -- a young third baseman (Kevin Youkilis) and catcher (minor leaguer Kelly Shoppach). But there's no guarantee the Red Sox would give them up for such an obvious rental. Don't be surprised if the Marlins become major players in the Beltran sweepstakes. Ownership has shown a willingness to do the rent-a-player thing in the past (C Ivan Rodriguez, RHP Ugueth Urbina), and Florida has a deeper farm system from which Baird can choose. " Sporting News: Inside Pitch And here you go from Peter Gammons: "Baird says there are four teams currently in the Beltran hunt, with the A's, Red Sox and Yankees three of the four (could the Marlins be the fourth?). Baird and Beane worked on the three-way trade that would have included the Dodgers, then spent the weekend working with Theo Epstein on a three-way deal that in the Red Sox's world would have sent Beltran to Boston, Kevin Youkilis and Scott Williamson to Oakland and A's third baseman Mark Teahan (Kansas City's favorite), Red Sox catcher Kelly Shoppach and Oakland pitcher Mike Wood to Kansas City." Peter Gammons News and Notes
June 22, 200422 yr in case everyone doesn't know, Rosenthal and Berradino are joined at the hip. this is the same rumpr being circulated over and over.
June 22, 200422 yr well by now we should know that our front office doesnt like to let it be known we are going after someone...(in the case of vlad)
June 22, 200422 yr i just read on Espn.com that beltran was a player away from going to the dodgers but they wouldnt give up Mota so it fell through...
June 23, 200422 yr i just read on Espn.com that beltran was a player away from going to the dodgers but they wouldnt give up Mota so it fell through... The Dodgers have been close to getting a couple players and Mota has been the stickler on it. This is probably the second or third time I've heard a deal wasn't made because the other team wanted him.

Peter Gammons News and Notes I dont see how this proves anything. Like Marlins2003 said, and astutely, Berardino and Rosenthal are connected at the hip. In fact, Rosenthal is hardly stating anything factual. It is speculation predicated by a deep (yes, deep) farm system and our ability in the recent past to demonstrate we are buyers, not sellers. (Urbina, Conine, Koch, etc.). That is no more informational than anything anyone here posted. And Gammons is clueless and grabbing at straws. However obvious they may be. Is there reason to believe we are in the Beltran sweeps? Yes. But is it likely that we are serious? I dont think so. I dont think we can re-sign Beltran - but that isnt why we wont make a move. This team would easily depart with some farm talent to get Beltran for the rest of this season. And we could survive the 'purge' it would take. I think the real reason is that we are waiting to see where we are after the ASB to better ascertain whether we should buy or not. This also entails that there should be a better situation available at that time - well, in terms of options and value. The Marlins FO is not going to pull the trigger on a bad deal because they cant afford to. Not fiscally nor talent-wise.
June 23, 200422 yr Gammons updated his Beltran trade rumors last night on BBTN and Marlins were not mentioned
June 23, 200422 yr Or Matt Stairs. Or Frank Catalanotto. Or Michael Tucker. Frank Catalanotto aka FCAT. He would be right at home here in South Florida! :lol
June 23, 200422 yr Gammons updated his Beltran trade rumors last night on BBTN and Marlins were not mentioned :confused yeah i saw it they only mentioned the red sox yankees and dodgers
June 23, 200422 yr Or Matt Stairs. Or Frank Catalanotto. Or Michael Tucker. Frank Catalanotto aka FCAT. He would be right at home here in South Florida! :lol He is the best choice. The only issue right now with Catalanotto is he just came off the DL with a hamstring pull. We need to make sure it won't become a recurring problem (i.e. Chipper Jones) before we go after him. But of the names mentioned, Catalanotto would fit in the best.
June 23, 200422 yr I don't see how either the Yankees or Red Sox would be stupid enough to trade for Beltran NOW. Giving up top notch prospects for a guy you can throw money at in the offseason? That ain't right.
June 23, 200422 yr What about Brad Wilkerson? The guy is cheap and has a nice bat.. Started out the season terrible but has been playing great lately.. Can play any position in the OF and also 1B
