June 29, 200422 yr from the Herald: PHELPS HAS SURGERY Left-handed reliever Tommy Phelps, who was optioned to Albuquerque on June 16 but never reported to the team due to lingering pain in his elbow, had surgery Monday to remove a bone spur in the elbow. ''I've been pitching in pain all year,'' Phelps said. Phelps said he will miss anywhere from six to eight weeks and would begin rehab at Single A Jupiter.
June 29, 200422 yr Unfortunate for him. He was about to establish his first full-time role with a big league team. Who knows if he'll ever make it again. I hope the Marlins reward him for his service and give him a chance in September.
June 29, 200422 yr interesting news ... better than letting him pitch with pain, at least he let it out 6-8 weeks ... :thumbdown
June 29, 200422 yr It always seems these guys never know anything is wrong till a doctor tells them. It reminds me of those looney tunes episodes where someone will get arrows in their back, but until they see it, they don't notice them.
June 29, 200422 yr Looks like he won't be back fully healthy until next year like Spooneybarger. Spooneybarger has become to the disabled list poster child

It reminds me of those looney tunes episodes where someone will get arrows in their back, but until they see it, they don't notice them. ''I've been pitching in pain all year,'' Phelps said. If he was in pain all year, why didn't he say anything to anyone? Isn't this stupid? Didn't he pitch a complete game?? And he was in pain the entire time? I don't admire these things, I admonish them. It's just plain assinine for someone to be in pain every day and not say anything. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but he got what he deserved. I hope he makes a full recovery and pitches for some other team.
June 30, 200422 yr Phoenix, You obviously have never been a Competitor in any sport to make a comment like that . enjoy your cushy chair and keep typing those comments .

Did the Marlins know this? I'll bet they probably just put him on an anti-inflamatory drug and told him to keep pitching. That's what these teams due with guys that aren't the "stars". Good Luck Phelps!!
June 30, 200422 yr He was pitching very good all year, even with a messed up elbow. Hope he recovers fine.
June 30, 200422 yr Good. He Sucks. :thumbdown He was great out of the pen early in the year. He had a couple of rough outings as a starter, but as we've heard his arm wasn't ready to take on the stress of being a starter. With that said, he was still an improvement over Oliver.
