June 30, 200422 yr PA Fish Fan, where did you here Livan was available? I'd love to bring him back, however I thought he signed a new long-term deal and Minaya plans to keep a solid team together for wherever the Expos play next season. I remember reading somewhere (and if I could only find that article) that the Phillies were actually looking into acquiring Livan as well. I'm not sure head to head if we could offer more than them, but it should be interesting.

The thing about that is that the Phillies can't take anymore salary on and their GM doesnt seem to want to make the big deal to put them over the top. If we make any offer, the Phillies will fold.

Yea, I understand that, but I also heard that they were looking to move Millwood (to the Yanks?) to clear some of that space.
June 30, 200422 yr Arizona has good young RP indeed, most of it is injured though and I didn't realize it... Jose Valverde last season 2.15 ERA, 71 Ks in just 50.1 IP (on the 15-day DL, june 14) Oscar Villareal is also on the DL, but he was great last season so he wont be much help obviously, 2.57 ERA Villafuerte has a 3.09 ERA this year, not injured

They certainly aren't going to give up Valverde and really have no reason to deal the other 2. Those guys wouldn't help us much anyway.
June 30, 200422 yr If a trade is made in any capacity, we are going to have to acquire an overpriced veteran. Teams are looking to cut the fat off their rosters and I dont see any incentive behind trading away a young talent to us for more young talent in return unless that team has a lot of depth at a given position. Texas seems to have a lot of young bats, but I dont see anything happening there. Besides, they need a starter and I dont think we are willing to give up one of ours at this point. I also think, Dtrizzle, Bautista would be a solid acquisition if we could put both he and Conine in the lineup. We could, but we would have to jettison Choi's PT - and I dont want to do that at all. That is the problem with any trade we make - it would have to be a clear upgrade over Conine in order to make it happen. And I dont see a situation that would play out like that. Again, we would have to acquire an overpriced vet and a guy like Rich Aurilia could be available - but where do you play him? (I would put him in LF, but I dont see that being better than Conine) You could trade a couple of starters for a guy like Wily Mo Pena from the Reds because they have a lot of depth in OF or even Aaron Rowand from ChiSox as they expect to get Magglio back soon. I just dont see a deal worth it out there and I think our team is good enough to win.

June 30, 200422 yr Author I was just e-mail that the Marlins are talkin to Indians about Matt Lawton? I don't know if this is true. I need time to research this, but I thought I'd post it anyways. Also the to add to last night, Teixeira to the Braves. It appear the Braves will wait until there lefty Horacio Ramirez comes off the DL. It works for them two folds, because for one it lets them see what they have in Byrd. Plus they could be buyers rather then sellers.

He would be a nice pickup, only problem is he's got another year left on his contract and is due some 7 or 8 million next year. Now this wouldn't make much sense at all for us because Conine's still got a couple years left on his contract and getting Lawton would probably mean that we wouldn't be able to resign Penny and Pavano. So unless the Indians take on a considerable amount of Lawton's remaining contract I don't see how this would be a smart move for the fish.
June 30, 200422 yr Lawton is due $6.75 M next year. Unless the payroll jumps another $10 M this offseason I can't see how Pavano and Penny could fit in.
June 30, 200422 yr Lawton would be awesome Guy could fit right in the third spot and hes quick He is expensive...but hey, you don't get an opportunity to win big every year
July 1, 200422 yr I hope to God we arent going after a bat. I would rather us get another arm in the pen - someone reliable. I would love for us to get Eddie Guardado from Seattle, but I dont know what we would have to give up.
July 1, 200422 yr If we need long relief, we got bigger problems. What we need is a guy to come in and get the ball to Benitez and can pitch 1-2 innings. We have enough quality after that to get this pen right. I would love to see us get Guardado. He could set up Benitez then you can fill the pen with whomever throws the most strikes. I think we are going to make our move in the second half - when are starters will be united once again and healthy. I am officially starting to worry about Willis though.

Sure, if this team were to get on a roll we could win the division. Do we really have the pieces in our system to make it happen? I'm starting to believe that the existing team is just what the record reflects...a .500 club. They've been playing like a .500 club for 2 months, and their record continues to slide, instead of improve. We need to acquire a #3 hitter, and a set-up reliever to make it to the playoffs.

July 1, 200422 yr cleavland aint moving anyone, they're still in the race and are gonna be nasty next year...they have no need to trade any of their players
July 1, 200422 yr 434754 They will need to move Lawton eventually, because he makes $7 million next year and they have some very talented you outfielders in their system. That being said they may want major league players in return for Lawton.

But the way Philly is playing we should be way ahead already with our talent.
July 1, 200422 yr I still think the single best offensive player the Marlins could acquire is Javy Lopez. Angelos is furious with what he got for the $123 million he spent this off-season. He's said so publicly twice in the last week. With the O's 16 1/2 out (last time I looked) in June, keeping Lopez (who was four for four last night and is batting .315 or so) seems less and less important. Besides bringing some real power to the middle of the lineup it also shuts up the "we miss Pudge" club. I know, I know, you all love Redmond and Treanor (and so do I) but bringing in a guy like Lopez is the right move for this team. He's a three-four-five hitter, could add alot of protection to Cabs, Lowell and Choi and make each of them better hitters. Probably a snowball's chance in hell but I still think it's the Marlin's best move without having to break up the team.

July 1, 200422 yr baltimore aint gonna get rid of javy... 434865 well you certainly made your case as eloquently as your grasp of the language and baseball allows.
