Paying Pudge $10 million for this year made sense. For the next year too. But after that? I can't see paying him $10 million 3 years from now. The Marlins were trying to avoid crippling themselves like they did with the CJ and PW contracts.

It made sense not to sign him AT THAT PRICE a few months ago, and I think it still makes sense.

3-4 years, at 8 million a year should have happened. I have no doubt that the Marlins never offered that, but I would be that even if they had, Pudge would have turned it down. And, in spite of Pudge's great year, he still lost in this situation. The Tigers are OK, but he's never going to win another title. If he were here right now, we'd be rolling. Both parties lost.

If the Marlins gave in to the demands that Boras Wanted (4 yr 40 mil), The Marlins would have been cash strapped. Loui wouldnt be a Marlin. Lowell might not be a Marlin next season.

I still agree with what the Marlins Decision.

Mr.Loria going on the cheap when it came Pudge neotiaions was the worst move by any teams this year.THe Florida Marlins needed Pudge more than Pudge needed them.

Pudge is a winner and one hell of a player who elevates players around him.It amazing the turn around the Tigers have done.Just making the playoffs for the Tigers will be the equivalent of winning World Series.

No. You got it all backwards. Check your facts.

I disagree. Pudge never intended on staying here this season. Loria is not going to spend a fortune to keep him, and he shouldn't. What has killed this team has not been the offense, but the bullpen and pitching staff. The bullpen cannot hold games other than Manzanillo and Benitez. The rotation has been inconsistent and they keep blowing games.

The offense and defense have been hot recently, and will continue if trends over the last few seasons have shown.

The players we really miss right now are Chad Fox, Josh Beckett, Mark Redman (he did suffer dead arm last year though), and Castro not doing what was expected in the least.

The Marlins offense has scored 344 runs so far this season. We have played 78 games. That is about 4.4 runs per game. If you can't win alot of games with 4 runs a game, you have a pitching problem.

CORRECTION CAPE: You have a bullpen problem

Say what you want but this team need Pudge.Mr.Loria is an idiot.

Now Pudge

What's next, Tejera for Ace?

So very, very fickle.

I'd be the first to agree that Loria is cheap, but giving Pudge all of that money so he can pay for crutches during the last two years of his contract would of been mind-boggingly stupid.

The last time I checked Pudge wasn't very good out of the bullpen. So even if he was here right now you'd all be sitting here complaining that we blew 40mil on Pudge and are still losing because our staff gives up touchdowns in the first couple of innings and couldn't hold a lead if their lives depended on it.

The matter of fact is that Loria could not afford or was it smart business to take a risk in signing a 32 year old catcher to a 4 year contract who has had a history of back problems.

The fact is the team will probably still lose money this year because the fans still arent showing up.

Its going to be interesting how many fans show up this week for the series against the Rays after this drought were going through.

thats average to below average run production. most teams with that kind of run production don't "win alot of games".

we need pudge if i knew he would do this this year i would of paid him 13mill. anyone can say what if this and what if he got injured .what if he doesnt get injured and puts up incredible numbers for 4 years. then we gave up on prob the best catcher in the game . pudge was this team last year. he was the character of the team and leader. i would give up not being able to sign back either penny or pavano to have a solid HOF catcher.

You people don't realize that the stickler was the years more than the money

OK, now I'm sure that shortly after Pudge signed with Detroit that I read he was getting 16million over two years with the Tigers and he had turned down a 14 million two year deal (with an option to extend to a third year) from the marlins.

So over two years he would have lost a couple of million. Now to us a couple of million is a helluva lot of money, but to a future hall of famer like Pudge it is like chump change.

I heard recently of how David Ortiz accepted a 5.5 million a year contract to stay with the Boston Red Sox, when quizzed about why he didn't try the market and get more money? He replied that he was playing the best baseball of his career at Fenway Park and he wanted to stay there and continue being an MVP candidate (something he NEVER was in Minnesota). Also he, refreshingly added, '5.5 million is a lot of money'.

Pudge should do some talking with Ortiz, might alter his reality. Fact of the matter is, Pudge turned down continuing to stay with his family, working with good young pitchers, being on a possible World Series team to go play for one of the worst teams in baseball history because he wanted a couple more million!

I like Loria, and hardly anybody in baseball thought Pudge would be worth that kind of money. So I hardly hold him accountable. The biggest error was when Guerrero basically was on our doorstep asking for 10M/year, and we said NO. That I never understood.

Huh?

Guerrero is in a 6 yr $82M contract.

Any thought that he would have been a Marlin for a 1 yr $10M is just wishful thinking.

People want to bash Loria for anything. But the truth is Loria has done an excellent job rebuilding the franchise.

Not a 1 year deal. 4-6 years 10m/yr he would have. Especially when he was struggling to get suitors.

God forbid we have a discussion on a message board about a former player Juanky. Get over yourself. Go to a real police acadamy if you want to play cop but quit doing it on a message board.

we've rehashed this a hundred times already.

yes Pudge is a terrific player.

they wanted to keep him, but not at anything approaching 4-years 40 million.

2 years, 8 mil each, with a possible 3rd year sounded reasonable to me.

apparently not to Pudge.
