...A portion of manager Jack McKeon's postgame response turned into a desk-pounding chastisement of the media. McKeon was perturbed at the suggestion the Marlins might trade would-be free agents such as Benitez or Carl Pavano if the team falls too far out of the race before the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline.

 

Shouting loud enough for owner Jeffrey Loria and team president David Samson to hear from the corridor, McKeon said: "We're trying to win, and that doesn't help us one bit. ... Give these guys a damn chance. ... We're trying to win here. We don't need you guys screwing it up."

McKeon was in high spirits, using the occasion to rip into reporters afterward due to continued speculation about potential trades involving Marlins players.

McKeon's outburst came within earshot of team owner Jeffrey Loria and President David Samson. "He's tired of reading that," Loria said.

In 2002 when Floyd and Demp were traded some of you might remember how the media damned the then new Marlins ownership for those trades and watched with glee after the media proclaimed how every good player would be traded soon as the Marlins (totally demoralized after being asked in every media interview and blasted accross the front pages of every paper who would be next) went into a 10 games tailspin and blew what had been a very good year.

 

Jack was not going to let that happen again.

WOW those reports on the papers are so predictable, but my favorite is the unbiased Palm Beach Post, which not only said that Jack had an outburst, but "a profanity-laced tirade"...

 

Face it people we don't have newscasters or reporters down in Florida who know anything about Baseball... We have Football junkies pretending to be the Baseball know-it-alls. They all suck. Good that Jack put them in their place.

Jack's got it easy with the media compared to other places like New York or Boston.

I'd be pissed too if they kept asking me the same stupid question over and over again. Your team is two games out of first and the media is worried about trading guys away? How stupid can you be?? :mad :

Jack is the man.

Jack did a good thing standing up for his guys...but it isn't totally the media's fault, Pavano sort of got it going a little harder with his implications that he likely won't be back. Remember the whole "it's better to get something instead of nothing" thing?

 

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jack step up and tell the big media targets lately (Lowell, Pavano, etc) to just stop talking all together...may be the best thing for the team.

When you combine this with Loria's "love" comments yesterday or the day before it certainly looks like the Marlins will be buyers instead of sellers.

 

Let's face it Jack did this with a purpose, to send not only the media but his players and frankly, ownership (who were within earshot in every account) a message, GO OUT AND GET ME WHAT I NEED !

 

Jack put Loria, Samson and Beinfest on the hotseat with his outburst and I for one am glad he did it. I suspect that was the real reason and he was using the media's dreadful behavior as a way of getting his message accross to the FO. Way to go.

He's been screaming for help for a while now, but any of this perceived pressure on Loria and Samson is just created by the media so that in the event (and I'd say it's 50-50) that we do nothing, (no buying or selling), McKeon's a martyr and Loria and Samson are up to their old hijinks from Montreal. After all, the media loves a bad guy.

loria is getting a stadium and nows the team can become profittable in the future, the fanbase is growing and the team is good even with a low payroll. Why would he run a franchise into the ground? then have to sell and basically make no money. Loria wants to make money. but like beinfest said we ain't spending money to spend money, when the team plays like they should we'd make a trade.

It will be interesting to see if today's ESPN news cycle picks up the audio from Jack's post game news conference and runs with it.

And I've gathered this from the NY Post:

"You guys are putting that s*** in the papers and disrupted this whole ballclub," McKeon vented. "You guys put that s*** in there about [Carl] Pavano, Benitez. Now they're all upset about it. All I know is that the Marlins better not be thinking about trading Pavano. That'll be like trading Wade of the Heat or Williams of the Dolphins. Pavano is the man and rumors of trading him ticks me off.

 

Do such rumors have something to do with the Marlins interest in Finley? Just curious.

 

Benitez and Pavano are two of our best arms. To trade them would be totally stupid. I am sure that the players do not read into media assumptions with any real concern. They are pros and they have a job to do- to win. I do not believe that this team will allow the press to effect their play.

 

The Marlins have sparked themselves with the sweep of the Mets and I bet that the Phillies will end up on the losing end of the series. If the Marlins allow this spark to turn into a blaze of wins, the press will have no need to talk about any trades.

But Wade and Ricky aren't FA's after the season, are they?

IN JACK WE TRUST . He makes some dumb managerial decisions every now and then but overall he's a badass.

 

I hope all the players were able to hear Jack's tirade.

So true.

 

Instead of reading headlines like "Jack rips the media" I'd like to see it the other way around once in awhile.

 

Jack has gotten a free pass this year on his at times horrible managing decisions. Granted, when you are the reigning WS champs alot of the latitude you receive is deserved, but it wouldn't hurt to see one of the local rags call Jack out once in awhile when he bunts out of the 3 hole early in the game or some other garbage like that.
